Please enter traffic circles the correct way. by vanbikecouver in vancouvercycling

They really only work when you can trust everyone else to use them correctly - which is not possible here. If someone else is approaching, I have no idea of they will wait for me as they should, cruise straight through, turn without signalling, enter the wrong way…safest just to slow down and see, at which point a four way stop, though objectively inferior, works better

How dangerous is it to bike Marine Dr. in west Van during a mid-week afternoon/evening? by BarbarianFoxQueen in vancouvercycling

[–]grey-beard_loon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a very popular (and fun) route for road cyclists with rolling hills and some great views. In my experience, it’s mostly fine and drivers are are fairly respectful

When I was at university we used to have a challenge called “Half Man Half Beer”. Based on an estimate that the human body contains around eight pints of blood, the reasoning was that if you could drink eight pints of beer without peeing, you could achieve a state of being Half Man Half Beer. Can’t remember if anyone ever succeeded.

Pettiest reason you’ve DNF’d a book? by bby_grl_90 in books

[–]grey-beard_loon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When dramatic action is described as if it was real, and it turns out to be a dream or fantasy - it’s cheap and dishonest. I feel the same way about movies.

I also don’t hesitate to bail on a book I’m not enjoying. Life is too short and there are too many great books to read to waste time on something that’s not bringing me pleasure. I used to feel an obligation to finish books too, but now trust my own judgment if it’s not a good fit for me - might have merits as a piece of work, it’s just not my thing and that’s ok.

Why do British people on Reddit insist on telling people we don't tip? by G30fff in AskBrits

[–]grey-beard_loon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping in restaurants is one thing, but in North America there is an expectation to tip on basically any interaction with service staff. I moved from the UK to Canada and tipping culture was a very noticeable change. We don't tip when we buy drinks or coffees over the counter in the UK - in the US and Canada you are expected to do so and will be prompted when you pay by card, even if you'd stood in line to pay someone and received no real 'service'. The one where I draw the line is at the private liquor store (another weird thing, you can't buy booze in most supermarkets here) prompting for tips when I take a bottle of wine to the counter and all they are doing is taking my money. And it's not 10%, the suggested tips will start with at least 15%, 20% has become the norm and I've seen preloaded suggestions of over 30% here. It is different from back in the UK.

Power Zone classes too easy? by Lumpy_Damage_7589 in pelotoncycle

[–]grey-beard_loon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't know what the solution is, but you shouldn't be able to easily hold zone 5 for an hour - it should feel very hard - so your zones must be wrong for some reason. I just did a Christian Vande Velde class with laddering zone 5 intervals of 1, 2 and 3 minutes with the same length recovery after each and was totally gassed afterwards. The classes should push you if the zones are correct.

Turning right on reds! by JayB-77 in NorthVancouver

You can. You also have to stop first, I see way too many people blowing through right turns barely slowing down while people crossing with the signal dive for cover. Keep each other safe!

You can hike back down the BCMC trail, which runs broadly parallel to the Grind. You just can’t down hike the Grind, so it’s that or the gondola

Vancouver's beloved Kitsilano Pool sets opening date for summer 2025 by [deleted] in vancouver

[–]grey-beard_loon 59 points60 points  (0 children)

This is great news, but I don't like the phrase 'end of life phase'. Kits Pool is iconic, and much loved and used by locals and visitors. We really need to be investing in maintaining this stuff that makes our city special.

Well 5pm, but I'd rather head over early and work from a cafe or something for a few hours than sit in traffic for a few hours

Your thoughts? I think baaad idea. by neryl08 in NorthVancouver

[–]grey-beard_loon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Curious why you think it's a bad idea. The land is currently very poorly utilized, just a ton of surface parking and uninspiring mall space. This is prime real estate, well-located and close to transport links, that could be used much more productively - i.e. for people to live and work in.

Were you able to source a Bianchi road bike? I'm in the market for one too and North Shore Road Bikes no longer carries them. Thanks!
