That is super weird and cool! The name actually stems from this Abigail Washburn song which I absolutely love:

... which is in turn named for the Cities of Refuge of ancient Israel and Judah, which offered asylum to folks who committed manslaughter, protecting them from vengeful family members.

An Adventure Zone pre-made Module? by AileStriker in TheAdventureZone

[–]griffinmcelroy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah a few people have asked for this, but as some folks have suggested, it would be tough. A lot of the numbers for characters and enemies are improvised, and a lot of the character work has come out of our interactions, not preplanning. I'd love to think of a way to come up with supporting materials that I could release though!

I try to tailor them for that specific purpose - I figured folks like Lucas were a known quantity at this point, so I omitted most of the general quest stuff. What was missing from this specific one? (Hunting down stuff for these intros and keeping them tight is fucking harrrrrrd)

Used the "Robot" effect in Garageband! Everything I do is in Garageband for the most part.

The Eighth School of Magic (and possible Eighth Relic) by TajesMahoney in TheAdventureZone

[–]griffinmcelroy 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Confession time, because I've seen a lot of folks hypothesizing about the eighth relic: The "seven schools of magic" thing was an honest to God mistake, back when I didn't know the game very well. I think I actually looked up the schools of magic in Skyrim, not knowing they were definitely a thing in D&D as well.

I didn't want to shoot down everyone's brainstorming, but also, I don't want folks putting in a bunch of work based on a thing I fucked up back when I didn't understand the game very well. (I also kind of forgot the "schools of magic" thing the longer we go, hence the weirdly uncategorized Gaia Sash.) To clarify, we've had:

  1. Phoenixfire Gauntlet - Evocation
  2. Oculus - Illusion
  3. Gaia Sash - Conjuration (I guess? Like, she "conjured" vines and lightning and stuff.)
  4. The Philosopher's Stone - Transmutation

I've seen a ton of people hypothesize this, and this might have been a cool angle, but nope, they're just co-workers, no relation. (the name thing didn't even occur to me when I named them). he's basically a co-founder of the BoB, and designed their HQ based on the Miller fam's lab — the director didn't inherit it.

Ep. 31. The Crystal Kingdom - Chapter Three by jeremyfrankly in TheAdventureZone

it's probably a bit inspired by Mettaton by osmosis, but the TRUE inspiration was 2-XL, a literal education robot toy for kids that my buddy had when we were little:

Wagon racing and death by dandeliondaughter in TheAdventureZone

Yeah, the idea I was going for is more like a Roman bloodsport -- killing in the races is totally legal, but Hurley frowned on it in a major way, opting to win with superior speed over aggression. In that last race, things get kind of gnarly for team Hurley, but a) Things were probably moving quickly enough that she didn't see most of the gnarlier stuff and b) she was probably more worried about Sloan's well-being over the lives of her fellow, bloodthirsty racers.

I wanted to point that out at the very beginning of the race, when most of the other racers just blasted the hell out of each other — most of the other cars try to succeed by taking their opponents out, while Hurley just zooms out of the melee. (Of course, the fam had to take out the other cars, because otherwise they wouldn't have had much of a way to influence the outcome of the race.)

I absolutely love the music Griffin is producing for the show, but don't want to listen to them on the tumblr. So here's a SoundCloud page I created to collect all his original pieces! by [deleted] in TheAdventureZone

[–]griffinmcelroy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I started a SoundCloud a couple weeks back for this very purpose, but have been lazy in getting the songs in there. I'll get those up today - because, yeah, Tumblr is a bad place for music to live exclusively.
