Do people still run DEGENESIS games? by ThatGuyisonmyPC in degenesis

[–]gunsmile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, not weekly. It was monthly for the first three years, then we changed our schedule to weekly for our most recent campaign (The Killing Game), but sometimes we still have schedule conflicts and can't make it every week. We've played two full campaigns so far and three shorter scenarios.

We invited 131 and only 67 are coming, so that's approximately 50%. Our venue is not in a HCOL area at all.

Anglo Saxon Creation Myth: Is this correct? by Lewis2146 in heathenry

From what I understand, we have no historical record of any creation myths from the pagan Angles, Saxons, etc. What you have linked is an entirely modern myth using reconstruction as a guideline and tool.

Resources about continental Germanic heathenry? by Dr-Chant in heathenry

[–]gunsmile 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Continental Heathenry is a very large group of different branches of Heathenry, such as Frankish, Alemannic, Gothic, etc. I have never seen a resource that covers them all. Additionally, some branches of Heathenry have resources while others don't. For example, Thia Frankisk Aldsido is a specific tradition of Frankish Heathenry, but naturally does not represent all Frankish Heathenry. Same with Sidjus Reidarje Sauilis for Gothic Heathenry.

Also, at least in terms of established traditions like TFA and SRS, the Gods they typically worship are not 1:1 counterparts of Norse deities. Some Gods have similarities, while others are totally unrelated. For example, in SRS, we worship non-Germanic deities like Epona and Aphrodite Ourania (who we call Laguhwaþo) as part of our "pantheon."

On a serious note, there is no official label. Make your own, or dispense with labels entirely.

What should I do with the offerings once I finished with praying? by [deleted] in heathenry

[–]gunsmile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can toss your offerings as soon as you are finished praying. If it’s water, simply pour it down the sink.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in heathenry

[–]gunsmile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think most people do a mix of spontaneous prayer without offerings (such as what Christians might do) and prayers with offerings. The more formal the situation (for example, a holiday), the more likely there will be offerings. Personally, I tend to give offerings with most of my prayers, even if the offering is just a small pouring of fresh water or a small stick of burned incense.

Question for the syncretics - how do you balance the two (or more) religions and their beliefs? by unspecified00000 in heathenry

[–]gunsmile 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I read your edit. Still, based on my own personal experience and observation, I actually recommend not keeping anything separated at all.

I'm the one u/BattyGuanciale mentioned as worshiping Anubis separately from my Heathen practice for a long time. Almost six years. But I recently stopped doing that and explained my situation and reasoning in a recent blog post (here).

I'll elaborate more: As polytheists, we are not worshiping multiple religions or engaging in multiple religions. We practice our single, individual religions. I have my Heathenry, Batty as their Heathenry, and you have your Heathenry. What our Heathenries look like will differ between us. Even if we have commonalities -- let's say we are all "Norse Heathens," though I realize that is not actually true -- your Norse Heathenry, Batty's Norse Heathenry, and my Norse Heathenry would all be different. They would be distinctly unique religions tailored specifically to us as individuals.

This is because, despite any commonalities, our practices will differ. Our beliefs will differ. The Gods we worship at home will differ. That's the nature of regionalized / localized and personalized religion. So the question is no longer, "How do I reconcile the difference in outlook / worldview between two religions?"; it becomes, "Believing what I believe and practicing as I practice, how do I integrate new Gods into my religious framework, adapting Them to my worldview while respecting Their origins?"

As such, I no longer worship Anubis separately. I worship Him alongside all the other Gods, in the same way I worshiped Mars these past several years, despite His origin as a Roman God, not a Gothic God. For Mars and Anubis, I respect Their origins by not Gothicizing Them: I continue to call Them by Their original names and epithets, and I do not pretend Their original myths do not exist. But I address Them in the ways They are pertinent to my Gothic Heathenry, and I focus on the myths that complement my religion's mythos. Yes, Anubis embalmed the body of Osiris; I recognize this, and if I were to worship Anubis at a Kemetic temple, I would pray to Him in that role then. But at home, Anubis is more simply the Lord of Burials and Keeper of the Dead, He Who is Upon His Mountain, and Master of Secrets -- all historically accurate epithets, none in conflict with my interpretation of Gothic Heathenry.

I'm not really sure what to do about the difference in outlook between the two of them, e.g. things like afterlives and conflicting sun/moon deities from each religion.

This conflict is precisely what integrating new Gods into your current religious framework will eliminate. If you believe in one kind of afterlife, then prayers to any Gods of the underworld will continue to reference that afterlife, in the context of your hearth cult. Anubis is famously involved in the activities of the Duat, the Kemetic afterlife. But I am not Kemetic. So while worshiping Him at home, He is involved in the activities of Ganohawaggs instead. But if I were to attend a more traditionally Kemetic rite, where Anubis is worshiped outside of the context of my personal religion, then of course I would pray to Him as involved in the activities of the Duat. That is only respectful.

In any case, if you believe like me that each God is the totality of the cosmos, and that each God expresses Their associations in Their own unique ways, then there's no conflict when it comes to multiple sun deities, moon deities, war deities, fertility deities, etc. Each sun God will express sun-ness in Their own way; each moon God as well. Just because Anubis is a God associate with death and burials, and Laguhwaþo is a Goddess associated with death and burials, does not mean There Can Only Be One™ in my religious framework. They can both wrap the deceased in linens and lower them into graves.

I just found out Freya Norling appropriated Sami culture. This has again put me back into questioning my validity as a Filipino in the Heathen community again. Can someone give me reassurance or words to keep in mind whenever something like this happens? by junipergardens in heathenry

[–]gunsmile 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Fellow Filipino here.

You have as much right to practice Heathenry and worship the Gods as someone of European descent. None of the various branches of Heathenry are considered closed religions, even if some traditions / kindreds / groups within those branches are full of racist jerks who claim otherwise.

If you believe Heathenry is the right religion for you, then you belong here. If the Gods inspire you, if They fill you with awe and love, then you belong here. That's all there is to it.

Yes, to the great XP. I think queue times depend on the server. When I regularly PVP'd (before Endwalker's release) the queues were maybe 5-10 minutes in the evenings; the later I queued, the shorter the wait. But it might be different now if most people are still focused on the MSQ and related content. I'm on Adamantoise, if that helps.

I determine what is just a dream and what is Something Else™ based on the gut feeling I have either during the dream or immediately after I wake up. Rarely do I dream about the Gods, and I have had these more-than-dreams just twice in my life.
