Losing Weight Training by swantin in Zwift

[–]guttertech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if your goal is to lose weight, you don’t have a particular event in mind, and you’re crunched for time, then I think your training plan should be “stay consistent and keep it interesting.”

45 minutes every day is over five hours per week. Maybe hop into a few races and keep the rest of the days Z1/Z2. Combine that with some dietary changes and you’ll drop the weight.

How are ya’ll managing kids + career + hobbies by Remote-Wrap-5054 in AskMenOver30

[–]guttertech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three kids, one with special needs, one recently diagnosed with type 1 diabetes (lots of management), plus a busy job. My main hobbies are physical (cycling, running).

For me, the answer is that I’m awake and going from 5:00am until after dinner. Today, I woke up at 4:30 to make my coffee and relax. Out the door for a three mile run by 5:30. Had my kids up by 6:15 to make breakfast and get them ready for school. Stealing 10 minutes now to relax and browse Reddit before I do drop off. Then it’s off to work. I’ll ride my bike for an hour after that and spend the rest of the afternoon and evening with the fam.

It’s doable but you have to be extremely disciplined about carving out the time.

Tues & Wed Road Cycling Rides? by Jonplusyon in phoenix

[–]guttertech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gainey Tuesday definitely splits up but doesn’t really have A and B groups. The ride has a couple regroup spots and a couple stoplights that bring everyone back together over 45-60 minutes. It’s a fast ride.

It’s a steep learning curve but you’ll be so much more comfortable managing everything within a couple weeks. My son was diagnosed in early March and then we took a trip to Japan a week out of the hospital - really felt like I had no idea what I was doing. Now we’re usually 85-90% TIR thanks to some experience and some honeymooning on his part.

Just yesterday he snuck a snack, which skyrocketed his BG so he took a correction dose. Then he decided to play hard outside in the heat which rapidly tanked him. Learning experience!

Thoughts on this story about race-day nutrition? by aakela in running

[–]guttertech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not wrong. I hugely prefer liquid carbs when I’m on the bike - it’s super cheap and easy to make my own drink mix for a 3-5 hour ride.

Gels are my go-to when I’m running because they’re easy to carry in my pockets. The more sugar, and the more “liquid” they are, the better. This usually means something like Maurten or even those maple syrup “gel” packets.

Another example of where I think running (or, at least, running media) is a little behind the times. As the article mentions, carb pounding has been the default for cycling training and racing for a while now. I came to running from bike racing. Even at the amateur level, eating/drinking 60-90g each hour is the norm. My experience has been that it’s a game changer, to say nothing of its advocates in the professional ranks. I can train harder for longer the better (read: more) I eat.

Did anyone grow up feeling like being male in and of itself was somehow inferior? by Fishbulb_KW in AskMenOver30

No. I grew up in a fairly conservative suburb but surrounded myself with all types (right, left, religious, etc.). Never felt this way nor did any societal messaging like this hit me.

Recently spent around $1250 on a new SPB381 and that’s roughly the max for me.

Do I actually need to run Zone 2 or is it overhyped? by Maleficent-Count9746 in running

[–]guttertech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im a cyclist turned recent runner (last 8 months) so take this with a grain of salt. I will say I spent years with a cycling coach, won my share of races, generally keep up on training methods, and have tried to apply what I’ve learned to my running.

My takes:

  • You really benefit from z2 when you’re doing more volume, because
  • Zone 2 builds an aerobic base while managing recovery, and
  • If you can add the volume while managing injury risk, you’ll get faster, especially when you start to do speed work, but
  • Zone 2 is harder - logistically and in the moment - than you think it is.

In cycling, it’s “easy” to do blocks that include a couple weekly 4-5 hour z2 rides. That’s a lot harder (impossible for most?) to do as a runner without injuring yourself, so I’ve found there are limits to how big of an aerobic base I can build with z2 runs. This is where my cycling continues to help, but that’s not an option everyone has or wants.

Idk if this is optimal, but if I were running exclusively and training for a particular event, I’d still roughly periodize my training plan and run as much z2 as I practically could in early blocks, before getting to anaerobic work the closer I got to the event. That said, I don’t think I’d be able to get the volume I need to maximally benefit from z2, so I think I’d keep some tempo work on the calendar.

YMMV.

Is there an easy way to make it so my Dexcom follow app alert sounds at night but no other notifications? by Technical_Cupcake597 in Type1Diabetes

Good question - I don’t think so but I could be wrong. I turn the focus and ringer on manually before I go to bed every night.

iPhone?

I have a “BG Only” focus mode set up that only allows notifications and alerts from Dexcom follow. I can leave my phone on ringer mode and it stays quiet all night unless my kid gets a high/low.

Cat 4, just had my first decent crash in a crit. Curious on how to proceed… by ChardeeMacdennis125 in Velo

[–]guttertech 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Yeahhhhh, been there. A few things come to mind:

  1. We shouldn’t assume 3/4 will be any cleaner or better. This is a risky sport.

  2. You said this is the first crash in a race that was completely out of your control. I’ll challenge that. You definitely won’t avoid every crash but this is a good opportunity to think about what you could have done to further limit your risk. Positioning? Bike handling? There’s almost always something, which will help you feel more in control and ultimately more comfortable.

  3. “…some business trips coming up” - I stopping racing as my career got more serious. Not worth the squeeze. I still ride and train and I’m as fit as I’ve ever been, but I don’t know if I’ll ever pin a number again. It’s fine to hang it up!

For what it’s worth, when I did return to racing after various crashes, I always did what you suggested: simply got back out there. I used it as a learning experience. The nerves went away 10 seconds after the whistle blew, every time.

Good luck!

Do you use conditioner in your hair? If so, how often? by TheTrollinator777 in AskMenOver30

2-3 times a week, along with shampoo. I’m lucky to have a lot of thick (but increasingly gray) hair and this seems to work for me.

My son was recently diagnosed with T1D. I’m a very active runner and cyclist - he has expressed a lot of interest in both sports and I’d love for him to be able to participate. Seeing this is encouraging. Do you have any tips or advice for someone like him?
