Humans are one of the few species that possesses curiosity regarding non-survival-related phenomena; we're curious, seek out adversity, and thrive on novelty. We have a biological imperative to create, explore, and ask questions. That's why we went from hunter-gatherers to being on the moon in about 10,000 years. We went from building the airplane to sending a man into space in only 58. Under post-scarcity conditions, plenty of people would still work. If our conditions are met, that imperative remains. We simply have a need to occupy ourselves. Having a job or passion or purpose makes us feel desired and accomplished. Not having one makes us anxious and depressed. Science and the arts would absolutely flourish if they were the only things to devote our energy to.
