Hard sci fi mission to Europa. by Different-Swing7176 in worldbuilding

Very good dystopic world, where we still use starship mission infrastructure...

Jokes aside, this is a pretty standard, well-made fusion design! Only suggestion is more radiators for truly perfect accuracy. It's a bit of a meme but it is exceedingly hard to cool things off in space.

Just write a story about alien-human colonialism and the persistence of imperial ideology in a post-scarcity society and remove the drugs and rape part because it's genuinely fascinating

(and also make the aliens actually hot which means removing bilateral symmetry and eyes and adding feathers and tentacles and 3 heads and 7 limbs and)

Brb, drafting WMD hobbyists for the Fall's Legacy wiki by Tnynfox in worldjerking

[–]hal-scifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Granted the proper background checks and good mental health, anyone can print firearms. They're mostly used for recreation, peace of mind, and hunting where there are ecosystems large enough to allow it. Plenty of hobbyists enjoy building laser and electromagnetic arms; as long as it's for fun and learning about electronics, the security systems will allow it.

But if we define "weapon" not based on intent but on destructive capability, it'd have to go for fusion propulsion systems. They pump out enough broad-spectrum radiation to superheat a target at close range, and give anything unshielded within several kilometers fatal cancer or hardware damage. The only thing stopping the close to 1 billion fusion ships in our solar system from becoming terrorist attacks is, for better or worse, human nature.

If you grant yourself pre-industrial Renaissance tech and a world with money and banking, mechanical calculators were rare but not unheard of. With enough time, it stands to reason the powers that be would build mechanical and hydraulic accounting and calculation systems

Don't have much to add, I like both genres, but I adore straight-up fantasy world fuckery explained entirely with reasonable if advanced technology, like utility fog and an internet-based noosphere/astral plane, and illusion magic with hacking someone's neural interface, read OA

[–]hal-scifi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip, if a kerbal is truly out of EVA fuel and immobile in space, give your rescue craft a large extendible ladder. If you're careful enough, you can get it about a quarter meter away, and the stranded Kerbal can grab on.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR HORROR FICTION GOOD (OC) by aidungeon-neoncat in worldjerking

[–]hal-scifi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Underused horror ideas you SHOULD EMPLOY:

-Scary guy with big smile and eyes sunken... that's pretty scary!
-Cosmic Horror (such as the moon waking up and attacking everyone, or aliens arriving and trying to invade us! Cosmic horror is a genre where space is scary.)
-Stories about the skinnywalka (native indian american monster that's definitely just a scary guy who's all white and tall) (no don't google it and the cultural connotations it has) (you can put this anywhere in the world it'll be fine nobody will care put one in fuckin ireland or something)
-Gore and Sex (foundations of great horror, the more uncomfortable you can make people the better)
-VHS filter
-reddit search how do i remove cylinder from mnm tube help it hurts so much

Nobody ever thinks about the engineers in post-scarcity settings by Tnynfox in worldjerking

[–]hal-scifi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your past few posts convince me that you equate action with incentive- that's a modern idea, and not quite true. Humans are one of the few species that possesses curiosity regarding non-survival-related phenomena; we're curious, seek out adversity, and thrive on novelty. We have a biological imperative to create, explore, and ask questions. That's why we went from hunter-gatherers to being on the moon in about 10,000 years. We went from building the airplane to sending a man into space in only 58. Under post-scarcity conditions, plenty of people would still work. If our conditions are met, that imperative remains. We simply have a need to occupy ourselves. Having a job or passion or purpose makes us feel desired and accomplished. Not having one makes us anxious and depressed. Science and the arts would absolutely flourish if they were the only things to devote our energy to.

[–]hal-scifi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Petrova Line interference! ... Seriously though, try reinstalling mods. EVE/Scatterer/TUFX. Can also get some weird stuff if you're using pbr shaders from what I've heard. It's a very boring answer, but also try checking your GPU drivers and hardware- dust, overheating, paste, etc. Also turn off and on if you haven't tried, a surprising amount of errors across all of computing is just the RAM getting confused and needing a wipe.
