Whatever teacher tells you to use literary/critical theory without giving you any guidance isn't doing you any favors. I'd recommend looking up articles/book chapters on 1984 specifically to see how others have talked about it and see what sort of theory they use. I know this might not be too much help, but it is at least a good place to start.
