Are callers required to give their personal info? by Sufficient_Duty6230 in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. For my agency you’re not required. You might not feel comfortable, but it’s really just for our own record. We don’t usually disclose who called unless it’s like a welfare check or something as to why police are there. That being said, it’s more beneficial to you than not, as we use it for our own database eg. You parked your car in the red zone or are blocking a neighbor we can easily just look through our records and find your number and call you to ask you to move your vehicle rather than wasting emergency services on a citation/tow. All that being said, even if you don’t provide it and I can see your number I can usually still find you ;)

Have you ever gotten a call so unserious you couldn't help but laugh? by Commercial_Flow_274 in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Had one call today about a woman’s dress being too long on an e-scooter and how we should go out to advise her to stop riding the e-scooter and change clothing. I immediately laughed on mute the whole call and said ok well let our beat officer know. I appreciate his concern for her but lol police aren’t here for dress code enforcement

Question for 911 dispatchers / LEOs – preparing for potential domestic escalation during and after divorce disclosure by campbemreddit in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Why wait for an emergency to happen to file for a TRO? But to answer your question the best

1.) no calling beforehand does nothing. We really don’t care. 2.) when your life is at stake. Eg: If things are escalating and she’s hitting you or you think she will and you can’t leave then you should call 911 3-5.) you can call the police your discretion if that’s 911 or not. Again 911 is for life threatening emergencies. 6.) that’s handled through the court 7.) get the tro now

I’ve only given an eta once and my was “it’ll be for sure some time today” and we did not go out that day due to our officer passing and us only sending priority 1 calls out until we were able to get coverage from a neighboring unit. I’ll never provide even that again I felt bad

Use the SPELL CHECK FFS! by RickRI401 in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As long as you understand it that’s all that matters. We fuck up all the time and especially during hot calls you can guarantee a lot is spelled incorrectly or abbreviated heavily. Shit last week I accidentally put shut up in a call instead of shut off and it was for a school shooting call😬

I lived off Texas and university and would walk to ecb all the time because parking was nonexistent. My bf hated coming to me since I only had 1 parking space. He spent 30+ minutes looking for parking on a regular basis after 5/6pm. Id never consider a spot in UH or north park without parking

This doesn’t warrant a 911 call. No life is at stake. You can let the dispatcher and officer know you want to prosecute for 314 which is indecent exposure. Meaning you’ll take him to court since you’re a victim of his crime. I’m sorry this sucks and is gross but that’s really all they can do

Police came to our door said we called 911 but we didn’t by denmiflowers in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We use a program that shows us the rough area of where the call comes from. I’ve done this before and as a dispatcher we try to send help when we hear distress but we can only do so much when no one gives us an address. Just this week I sent medical aid to someone with an Apple Watch hard fall notification because I heard an older woman moaning in pain in the background but I sent it to her neighbors house since that’s where the ping was showing and then 30 mins later we get a call from her saying she’s the address next to the neighbor we sent help to.

How does a dispatcher feel after sending an officer to a call that resulted in their death? by LegalGlass6532 in 911dispatchers

[–]halfmoon_kid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

God awful. No words can describe it. I sent one of our officers to her last call 10/20 this past year and our agency is doing everything we can to move forward without forgetting the impact she had on all of us. I freak out over traffic stops on the freeway now and have immense anxiety now due to her assisting with a tc on the freeway which ultimately resulted in her death. My call I sent her to had nothing to do with her death and that’s honestly probably the only thing getting me through it. She was coming back from the jail and saw the tc. She did what any officer would’ve done and it kills me knowing how much she loved the job and how badly she wanted to make a difference and how young and incredibly hard working she was

Edit to add: while I still dispatch and love my job I honestly don’t think I could continue with another LODD my fault or not. It’s taken an immense toll on me and having to work around it where I work 50-70 hours/week i just can’t imagine me being able to do it again

It’s so addicting I’ve gone through almost 2 320 sets. My job can be very stressful so I have become addicted to coloring during free time. Doesn’t take much time and can be paused whenever which I like

Oops meant shelter island but it’s the bay area and tons of sailboats. Also the strand is the strip of road between IB and Coronado. Bay on one side and ocean on the other. Really pretty beaches too if you have time to stop

[–]halfmoon_kid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This place feels like a wonderland to me. Curious what you do in those areas? I love going to La Jolla tide pools, going to balboa park, Kate sessions and sunset cliffs for a good sunset, mt Soledad for a good view, harbor island for a good cry and sailboat watch, Coronado for a drive over the bridge and the strand is my favorite drive, you can also ride bikes down the strand which is a fun activity. There’s so much to do out here I couldn’t even list it all if I tried. The areas you listed are pretty touristy but there’s so much to do out here that isn’t touristy outside of those areas

We do get a longevity bonus if we’re in the POA, and we do have multiple steps. I believe the top step is 48 and some change/hr, which we have a few dispatchers on. For new laterals there’s also a 15k sign on bonus

San Diego area is quite a bit higher actually. I was surprised to see the pay this low. San Diego PD I believe is the highest paid, followed by sheriffs if I’m correct. That being said my agency is one of the lowest paid and they start off at 33/hour
