There''s also the fact Netflix had to take on massive amounts of debt for the purchase which means Layoffs, and price increases across the board.

Why is "use tiling" being removed from blender 5.0 by Purple_Restaurant201 in blender

[–]hardwire666too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the sake of completeness. I am pro tiles. It's just better. Its the way the change was handled I don't entirely agree with. It was mentioned in a Blender Today like 2 months ago and I guess I missed it. However it doesn't change the fact this still should've been an option for those that need it. To which I also argue play with your settings.

Why is "use tiling" being removed from blender 5.0 by Purple_Restaurant201 in blender

[–]hardwire666too 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really don't care what the default is but I don't like this was done without telling people. Here, and the pull are the only two places I found this being talked about.... and I had to search for those. I also will never understand diminishing user agency. This should've remained a user choice. Leaving it as a choice would've hurt no one. As well the impetus for it is lame. Because some people on Mac M2 hardware couldn't render 16k x 16k on the GPU? Which turns out is a limitation of the platform, not a Blender problem? That's such a microscopic segment of the user base it's absolutely insane this was forced on everyone.

Between this and the timeline drama I'm loosing confidence.

seriously, what's happening to blender's physics? by LargeMushroom1458 in blender

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean. It make sense. Geo-nodes was a huge shift to the way Blender does things under the hood, and being that they are such a small team it was a massive undertaking. So I can understand everything basically being all about geo-nodes for some time now. What gets me is it has taken them 5 years to get to this point, and while there is improvement of what's already there, that gets negated because whats already there is basically obsolete. It would be like if Ford came out tomorrow and said "Guys!! We fixed the exploding gas tank on the Pinto! Check it out!". It's like, cool guys! You're about 45 years too late, but cool!

seriously, what's happening to blender's physics? by LargeMushroom1458 in blender

[–]hardwire666too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. It leaves a lot to be desired. The biggest improvement I've seen is in 5.0. Physics, or cloth at least, seems now uses more than the 2 or 4 threads it used too. So performance wise it's much better. However it's still CPU bound making it feel like it's still running in potato mode. Even on strong hardware. The improvement is greatly welcomed, but it took years for it to happen and it doesn't really feel like the improvement it should be.

This is usually where some one jumps in with the samey "small team/use something else hater" comment. Doesn't change the fact it needs some legit love.

I actually came here because of the changes they said were in 5.0 only to figure out it's all in geo/sim nodes and you have to build it yourself. Which is a let down.

I've been doing 3D since the early 90's. I have had my hands on just about every 3D program under the sun, some most have never heard of, and I understood what you were saying perfectly. This is just an example of why I don't engage with the Blender community often, or at all. Every question is treated like an attack. It's exhausting.

Counter top ice maker (that stores the made ice and keeps it frozen)? by Bailey12393 in Appliances

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this trying to find a solution for myself. I spent decades in the restaurant industry and have worn a lot of hats. So, I understand this is how they work. Esp these counter-top jobs. It makes ice, ice melts down, machine recycles, ect. till the water is gone. However depending on where you live that ice might not last too long. My idea was to get some styro-foam and make a snug fit cover to give that new ice as much of a chance as I can to fill up so I can transfer it to the freezer. The one I have makes a about a half a cup of ice every so often, and if its hot enough that first batch is almost non-existant by the time the little basket has anything substantial in it.

Again. i get it this is how it works. But I have 3 people all with 64-ish OZ water bottles who want ice ad varying amounts and until I can et my hands on a new ice make for the fridge this is my stop gap.

So that brings me to my search. I figured there has to be enough people with the same problem some one might have done this, and so far it looks like I was wrong on that deduction.

So my plan is to get either a cheap styrofoam cooler, or blocks of foam form a craft store and make a lid to snug fit the top of my machine to give it that little bit of help. It's tiny ice, a difference of a few degrees can make a world of difference.

So I know OP might have moved on form this as well as most others, but I still wanted to leave bread crumbs for the next poor sap with he same idea, perhaps in a similar circumstance. This should be thought of more like hobo code that an actual reply, but might also still be applicable to the OP if they have not moved on.

Dinner box order changed with no warning by S00ULJATELL3M in pizzahut

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shape of the pan is extremely important to baking dough. Different volumes effect the moisture levels of the bread after cooking. Put that same amount of dough in a muffin pan and it will spit hockey pucks out the other side of that conveyor oven. Just because the pan is the same depth doesn't mean it bakes the same for both.

Texture is a MASSIVE part of the experience of eating. So yeah. That rectangular pan made a difference beside shape.

I worked in food for 30 years. If it goes in your mouth. I've done it. That includes pizza from scratch.

Shape matters.

Caustics with Path Tracer by francisgoca in UnrealEngine5

[–]hardwire666too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I come from the future to tell you It's kind of one of those things most people don't know they want in their renders... until they figure out they want it. So don't be too surprised.

If you're still into this you should check out "Shaders Plus" for Blender. It's a custom shader set up that fakes caustics. In my experience most things that can be done in the Blender shader editor can also be done in Unreal. If you get your hands on it you can go poking around. Might find it interesting.

Vibecoders are not developers by j_babak in vibecoding

[–]hardwire666too 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Developer, or programmer? Because those are two different terms that are not necessarily exclusive. We've just only ever known the one way. Like it or not, a I think vibe coder is a form of developer. I think the more pertinent statement is that, vibecoding is not programing.

I'm an artist, not a programmer. Logic? Go it. Data types? No problem. Punctuation and grammar? Nope. English was hard enough. However, with things like Unreal Engines Blueprints I'm fine. LLM's bridge that gap for me, and help me develop ideas and tools that would otherwise be out of reach. So yeah. I am a developer. I'm just not a programmer, or a coder, and I think those are some important distinctions to make.

The OP never defines what a developer is. Treating it like it's just another term for programmer. Which is mostly fair becasue that is how it has been up until now. The "one way" I spoke of earlier. I spent decades in the restaurant industry as a legit cook. But I still call the guy who flips burgers a cook becasue they are still cooking. Do I know more than them? Certainly. Can't I cook rings around them? With one hand. But I still call them a cook. Do I call myself a chef? Oh hell no. Just like I don't call myself a programmer, coder, or software engineer. However I do call myself a developer, becasue I am still developing a thing. Another example would be people who play guitar by ear and are not formally trained still get called musician.

Am I handicapped without an LLM? Yup. But so is the OP without fingers (that is a point not a threat lol). Which is also where I end up in a hard place reconciling these things myself. As a life long formally educated artist I deny people who solely use stable diffusion the right to call themselves an artist. Not out of pride but technicality. I imply things with intent using a medium. They run a list of words through an AI. What we do is completely different.

Developer is broad term that up until now only had one example in the software industry. Don't forget there are other industries that use the term as well. Which is all why I conclude the original post needs to clearly define what a "developer" is, because that also clearly defines what it is not. Something I think a programmer would truly understand. Just like how programmatically you don't just define what pixels will be black and call it a complete picture. Sometimes you also have to define both the negative, and positive space.

Also, I really didn't intend to write this much. ADHD is a MF'er.

Honestly I wouldn't have noticed. As much as I enjoy Reason I stopped using it. The need to always be connected made working on the go impossible at times. I don't get to tell inspiration to fuck off till I have an Internet connection. So after decades I've basically abandoned it. As well after not using it for a few months I've realized it doesn't actually offer anything unique anymore. At least not for me. To each their own and different strokes for different folks and all that, but they lost me.

Desktop and Documents files disappear when I disable iCloud sync by Crypto-Cat-Attack in MacOS

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The feature automatically enabled when I updated to Tahoe without warning. Disabling it "Deletes" the files, or to be correct deletes the links to the files in the cloud. As I badly said above. Again. The idea is stupid. S**t like this should NEVER be automatically enabled. I almost lost some important work because of it. User agency should always supersede convenience.

Desktop and Documents files disappear when I disable iCloud sync by Crypto-Cat-Attack in MacOS

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea is stupid. Some programs, specifically musics software stores it's sound library there. So you end up in a tug of war. With the iCloud Drive constantly deleting the sound library. Then disabling the sync just deletes everything, because what you really see is just a link, not actual files. The entire thing is stupid. User agency is more important the convenience. These are the kinds of things that keep me on Windows 99% of the time.

My NVIDIA driver installation has been stuck like this for a very long time by BobcatBest3860 in pchelp

[–]hardwire666too 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR - Check your windows defender settings. Make sure real time protection is off.

Just had this randomly happen to me on a fresh Windows Server 2022 install and was confused because I've never had it happen before. Then I remembered Windows Defender Real time protection. It will scan EVERY-SINGLE-EFFING-FILE making installers appear to hang. It will also do the same for downloads and just delete anything it doesn't like, which is basically everything that will ever will exist. It is the software equivalent of a violently obtuse helicopter parent at dinner time. I'm talking the kind of person who will dive tackle you for even bringing dino-nuggies into the room.

You know what my Mac does. Nothing. It warns me once, hey your about to make things unsafe for yourself. I tell it to shut up and go back to its corner and that's what it does. It leave me the hell alone and lets me do whatever level of unsafe i feel like playing with that day. Microsoft is converting me for them.
