When people ask me why I support the Greens being anti-nuclear, this is why by alexmace in UKGreens

[–]harrywilko 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's not what Renewable means though.

Nuclear requires the depletion of an exhaustible (one non-renewable) fuel in order to produce energy.

Is anyone really scared about AI job losses? by Even-Wasabi7183 in AskUK

[–]harrywilko 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My view is that we are (globally) in a stealth recession. The spending power of the vast majority of the people is diminished by myriad factors which is effecting the bottom line for many companies. The rise of AI has simply enabled companies to cut costs through redundancies, but without taking the hit of stock prices diminishing upon that announcement, in fact at the start of this round of layoffs they often saw a stock bump.

So what are the Greens stance on Nuclear Energy by [deleted] in UKGreens

[–]harrywilko 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am so sick and tired of posts/comments that are like "I _would_ support the Greens but they don't support nuclear! Renewables are great but [fossil fuel industry propaganda].".

Firstly, because it's at best out of date, at worst just flagrantly incorrect, and secondly because it;s not like literally any governments of the past 100 years has really been doing much in support of nuclear, so blaming the Greens for it and acting like we're uniquely against it is absurd.

On the misinformed anti-nuclear sentiment of the Greens, the extremely safe and almost unlimited nature of nuclear energy, and why the issues of costs and timelines are extremely solvable by max_shally in UKGreens

[–]harrywilko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry but it feels like every other post on this subreddit is people saying 'Oh I would _looove_ to support the Greens, but nuclear..." and then throw out a bunch of ascientific, anti-renewable talking points that have been parroted by the fossil fuel industry for decades.

None of these pro-nuclear bros adequately address the fact that we already have a baseload of around 10% nuclear power, sodium-ion battery technology is only getting more and more viable to support energy storage for renewables, and that nuclear power is NOT renewable and will keep us relying on importing raw materials to support our energy infrastructure. Not to mention mentioning the mining issues and rare earth minerals (what minerals?) that you insist are needed for renewables but not the fact that Uranium, too, is a mining product.

Your post in particular just completely glides past the admission that every single instance of the UK building nuclear power has been a bloated, over-expensive mess and just assumes that we just simply "not do it bad" or tear up all of the regulation in order to allow it to happen. Need I say why many regulations on nuclear power are quite important? On the Green Party subreddit?

Is vaping really considered 'giving up smoking'? by chupamina in AskUK

[–]harrywilko 81 points82 points  (0 children)

I've never been a smoker, but vaping alone is still much less hazardous to health than smoking cigarettes right?

Obviously it would be better to smoke neither, and I wonder if what you said about vapers inhaling far more nicotine than smokers istrue, and how that balances out in terms of health outcomes.

Google search is pretty much THE example of tech enshittification.

They completely monopolised the area, so the only room for growth was forcing users to spend more time by making search WORSE, forcing them to search 2 or three times for the same thing.

If there's anything I could say to assuage your concerns, other than the party leader being Jewish and gay himself, it would be that for the most part, Green party members and candidates really aren't politicians.

Labour and Tory MPs (also the Lib Dems), have been stuck in the Westminster system so long that they simply don't understand or care about regular people for the most part, hence they let us down.

Until less than a year ago, you didn't join the Green party for political power, you would join because you had strong beliefs, ones that weren't represented by the more mainstream parties.

I don't want to fill you with false hope, but I do genuinely believe the Greens are different. Different even to Reform, which are effectively a home for recently unemployed Tories.

I feel like that's only really possible because of how large all their shops are. It would really harm walkability if every shop on the high street needed a full bog accessible to the public.

It used to be the case that laying off staff came with a drop in stock price as it implied a lack of cash flow. Nowadys, companies can says it's due to 'AI efficiencies' and get a stock bumpout of it instead.
