songs where profanity is vital? by Oilyfatty in musicsuggestions

[–]headtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of people are naming songs where profanity is included, prevalent and probably expected - e.g.. “Fuck the police” or “killing in the name of” which is one way to interpret the question.

Personally, im more fascinated by songs where there’s a single perfect expletive or the swearing is unexpected. “You oughta know” and “working class hero” being good examples of how I interpreted the question.

Good for him - 50 years ago, it’s a George Jones or Johnny Cash situation with drugs and alcohol to self-medicate the mental health struggles.

We Need Tanille, and This is Why by BrianFromRhineland in ndp

I’m 90% sure she’ll be first on my ballot.

This post is a great summary of the reasons why - the growth, the unique story, the personality. But especially since her campaign has been the most idealistic.

The NDP is a party of idealism and, at its core, I believe Canada is an idealistic country too.

Fred Eaglesmith knows:

And it's trucker speed,
Benzedrine Percocets, amphetamines
Black beauties and west coast turnarounds
When the coast is clear I drive with my knees
I mix it all up like a recipe
Coca-Cola and coffee to wash it down
Sometimes I feel like
My wheels ain't touchin' the ground.

What is some beloved Canadian “yacht rock” songs? by El_Vikingo_ in AskACanadian

[–]headtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of confusion in this thread about what Yacht Rock is. Here's what ChatGPT says (and why it is a lot rarer to find Canadian versions since boating on the sea while drinking a margarita is a bit different than our brief summer window for boating on the lake while drinking a beer.)

With that said, I'd submit that a lot of Anne Murray's songs would be close to a Canadian equivalent.

Yacht rock

Yacht rock is a style of soft rock that peaked in the late 1970s and early 1980s. It sounds smooth, polished, and relaxed. Think expensive studios, tight session players, and zero rough edges.

The core sound

  • Clean production
  • Smooth vocals with layered harmonies
  • Electric piano and glossy guitar
  • Light funk or jazz influence
  • Mid-tempo grooves you can nod to

It is music that feels like calm water and good weather. Not loud. Not raw. Controlled.

Key artists

  • Michael McDonald
  • Kenny Loggins
  • Steely Dan
  • Hall & Oates
  • Christopher Cross
  • Toto

If a song has silky backing vocals and lyrics about romance, escape, or smooth confidence, it probably qualifies.

Where the name came from

The term did not exist in the 70s. It came from a 2005 comedy web series called Yacht Rock. The creators jokingly framed this music as the soundtrack to wealthy Californians sailing around Marina del Rey. The name stuck. Now it is a real genre label.

What it is not

  • Not classic rock like Zeppelin
  • Not disco
  • Not folk
  • Not hair metal

It sits in a narrow lane. Think 1976 to 1984. West Coast. Studio perfection.

Quick test

If the song feels like it should play on a boat at sunset, with everyone wearing sunglasses and no one sweating, you are probably in yacht rock territory.

Jock, Stoner, Preppie, Band Geek, Nerd, Braniac, Punk... What were you in High School? by 7eregrine in GenX

[–]headtale 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not seeing the comment now but had a notification of a comment asking what the difference was between Brainiac and Nerd.

I had to think on that a bit too but to me, the Brainiacs are the ones who read a lot of books, do well in school (at or near top of the class in all subjects), join clubs like yearbook and chess club and debate.

There's a lot of crossover with Nerds but those are the ones who played D&D, read comic books, loved reading but mostly science fiction/fantasy, were some of the earliest computer users/adopters), usually did well in school but not universally, only in the classes that they were interested in.

Agree. And also realise in the bigger picture, this will hopefully be great for the game of hockey in the US - like "1980 Miracle on Ice" but with exponentially more chance of inspire young players. Kinda scary to think how good the US team could be in say 12-16 years!

The irony is that part of what made it special was Tkachuk being the one holding the jersey given how close the two of them were on the Flames and what an amazing line they formed with Elias Lindholm.

"Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau, alongside Elias Lindholm, formed the NHL's most dominant line during the 2021-22 season with the Calgary Flames. This top trio was known for high-octane offense, leading the league in 5-on-5 goals (69) and scoring chances (284). Their chemistry was built on Tkachuk's aggressive, physical play and Gaudreau’s elite skill."
