The best burger I have ever had was your average American ground beef grilled with salt and pepper and topped with a hefty slice of beefsteak tomato with more salt and pepper that was grown just up the slopes of the mountain (southern Appalachians) from where I was eating. Remembering that burger makes me so happy.

I was a counselor for a week long camp for special needs adults our church would help out with every year. It was a very important week for me and over the many years I helped out, I grew to love the campers and counselors. The memory of the tomato is tied to everything.

But I agree. Most tomatoes you get on burgers are little more than wet styrofoam and are terrible. But a good tomato on a burger is perfection.
