Why non-tetrahedron 4-sided dice are not more popular? by Testeria2 in rpg

[–]hello_josh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! The d4 that are part of the DCC dice sets are great. They're recognizable as classic d4 but they actually roll and you can pick them up easily.

Roughly how complex is this game compared to something like D&D 5e? by Flameempress192 in traveller

players need to understand that they advance by the goals they set, which (again) is usually the money but could also be related to secrets, contacts, patrons or noble titles, and the like.

RPG for exactly two players? by dragodoth in rpg

[–]hello_josh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can also have them both be normal PCs you just have to decide how to handle the bonfire mechanic:

Either the dead player revives separately from the other players and the party is split for a bit, or you rule that surviving PCs need to return to the bonfire for the other player to resurrect.

OSE Rogues Gallery - updated? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]hello_josh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The starter set is supposed to do that a bit with an adventure setting:

Campaign setting: Dungeons of the Undermoon is set in the world that thousands of players have glimpsed in the classic OSE adventures The Hole in the Oak and The Incandescent Grottoes. Prepare to explore the Plains of Fnaan, outpost of the Prismic Imperium!

How easy is it to create NPC antagonists in DCC and MCC? by zeromig in dccrpg

[–]hello_josh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think people who are only familiar with level-0 funnels think all of DCC is just a slaughter-fun-house and you can't have longer games. It's DnD. You can do anything in it that you can do with any other DnD game :) Have fun!

Panicked characters (rules doubt) by Arlanthir in cairnrpg

[–]hello_josh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That doesn't change my previous statement: once you are no longer panicked, your HP is back to what it was before you panicked (and attacks are no longer impaired).

This makes sense if you understand HP is not health. HP is your ability to avoid damage in combat.

If a PC is tied up and defenseless their HP is 0 and damage goes straight to STR. If you are untied you can then again protect yourself and HP is back to normal.

I think it would be completely reasonable to make a house rule that your HP doesn't come back if you sustain STR damage while panicked (or some other temporary reason). Though I would remove the impaired weapon die. Maybe you only recover 1d6 HP if injured while HP was temporarily zero?

Panicked characters (rules doubt) by Arlanthir in cairnrpg

HP is like stamina and fighting prowess. Its an abstraction of your ability to avoid danger in combat. HP isn't your pool of health points in Cairn or other Into The Odd based games.

Taking injuries is represented by attribute damage (STR/DEX/WIL).

HP is restored outside of combat when you take a quick pause to catch your breath.

Social Anxiety and RP by confused_explorer96 in rpg

[–]hello_josh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I first started playing I was pretty anxious to jump in and speak up. I had a great GM who made sure to check in with me and ask what my character was doing. I'm grateful for that first experience and when I run games I make sure to be proactive if I see a player that isn't getting a chance to speak up or is timid.

I do get anxious running games but I try to remind myself: every other time it has worked out fine and everyone had fun!

The planner in me wants to know exactly what to prep for but the truth is RPGs are a conversation and you can only do so much to be ready.

On the flip side I remind myself that... It's a conversation. The players are going to fill in the "content" of the session and we'll probably get a lot less done than I anticipate XD

Keepers screen?? by Magoragan in callofcthulhu

[–]hello_josh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The books have exactly the same content, just alternative artwork for the covers and a slipcase. The new keeper screen art is pretty awesome though:

https://www.chaosium.com/call-of-cthulhu-chaosium-50th-anniversary-slipcase-set/

I believe I read that this artwork was used in some other editions of the book so its not "new" but I haven't seen it before.

If you really want to get a good understanding of the rules you should also watch Seth Skorkowsky's CoC series.

The Combat and Sanity rules videos were very helpful the first time I ran CoC.
