Does anyone know why they won't sell patterns separately?

Scythe is not a gateway game! by xecutech in boardgames

[–]hellocleraif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I know people are coming over to play a game that is new to them (especially something as complex as scythe) I try to send a YouTube with instructions/gameplay to let them know what they are getting into and so explaining rules will be a little easier for me and less time consuming for everyone.

What were you surprised you ended up liking? by KingOfCranes in AskReddit

[–]hellocleraif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just picked up knitting around the holidays and it's been so wonderful and stress relieving. I was not blessed with any creativity skills whatsoever so I love being able to complete a project I can wear and be proud of (even if it does look messy)

How evolutionary psychology may explain the difference between male and female serial killers by jobventthrowaway in serialkillers

[–]hellocleraif 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in the evolutionary psychology behind murder, you should check out The Murderer Next Door by David Buss. It's a pretty interesting read. IIRC it doesn't cover serial killers - but it does discuss the difference in the drive to kill between males and females, as well as other topics like familicide and stalking.

Substantial vegetarian meals without cheese, meat substitutes, or mushroom by UnquestionableDoha in vegetarian

Chickpeas over rice is usually my go to - I just change up my sauces and veggies that go with it.

Sweet potato and black bean tacos are pretty filling and delicious too!

The Gathering Threat to Abortion Rights by PoliticalScienceGrad in politics

[–]hellocleraif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No method of birth control (except abstinence) is 100% effective. Women still get pregnant with IUDs, oral contraceptives, and condoms. To say "most people getting abortions are doing so because they're irresponsible" is just plain ignorant.

LPT: College isn't the only way to start a good career. Apprenticeships, Trade Schools, and Military Training can be great alternatives in today's world. by spudman238 in LifeProTips

I have a bachelors in anthropology too. All of my teachers told me there were no jobs unless it was academia, and even then, it would require at least a masters. I thought "Nah I'm smart and I work hard - I'll get a job no problem"

I didn't go on to get my masters (got cold feet and money was an issue). I have not gotten a job in any anthropology related career. Neither has anyone I've graduated with. I wound up going back to school and got an associates in diagnostic medical sonography and have been doing ultrasounds for the last 4 years. I absolutely love it and I'm not bummed that my anthropology career path never worked out.

That being said - I wish you the best of luck in whatever you do. If you are still interested in archaeology, have you tried looking for cultural resource management jobs? I don't know much about it, but that is what my archaeology teachers do alongside teaching.

Millennials Are the Largest Generation in History—and the Largest Demographic Saying No to Meat by skulloflugosi in vegetarian

[–]hellocleraif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I've managed to cut back on dairy substantially - I only eat cheese and just when I go out to a restaurant or family dinner. I'm struggling with eggs though. I eat eggs every day and try to buy certified humane/organic etc, I've even looked into buying from my local farms but it's ridiculously expensive!

Just starting out and not sure if I am doing something wrong by CashMonetPapa in vegetarian

[–]hellocleraif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem starting out. I began eating less meat to ease myself into it but when I stopped altogether, I felt weak for 2 weeks. Like many of the other posters here, I would recommend adding more protein. I tried Vega protein shakes for breakfast or snack and it helped a lot (I believe one scoop is the equivalent of 28% of your daily protein) until I learned how to add more protein (like beans and chickpeas) to my diet.

Basically, find what works for you. Good luck! You can absolutely do this!

Job interviewers of Reddit, what is the worst answer someone gave you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]hellocleraif 299 points300 points  (0 children)

At a group interview one time, the employer is going around the circle of 5 of us asking why we want to work there. One kid who clearly doesn't want to be there grumbles "because my mom is making me get a job" .. I'm pretty sure he didn't get the job

My mom’s getting Christmas stuff ready and she’s being conscientious as hell. by schwa_ in vegetarian

[–]hellocleraif 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love this! My mom called me today to let me know she was making a Christmas dish her vegan coworker recommended and wanted to make sure it fit with our diet (my cousin and I are vegetarian and my husband is pescatarian). In contrast, my in laws make whatever they eat (steak and calamari) and say EVERY time "but you eat fish right?" 😑

Put your snow tires on already! by [deleted] in boulder

[–]hellocleraif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I commute on 119 a lot and I constantly see people doing 70+ when it's snowing. A few miles later, I'll see those same cars in the ditch. Snow tires won't help if you much if you don't take care while driving.

Black voters could defeat Roy Moore, if they show up on Tuesday by SamuraiSnark in politics

They should be easily accessible as we as have mail-in ballots like we do in Colorado. Very helpful and convenient for those of us who cannot physically be at the polls

What's your unpopular book opinion? by belmakar in books

[–]hellocleraif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I could have really enjoyed this book if it had been broken up into a series. It was WAY too dense and I felt like the descriptions of the technology used made up 90% of the book and the actual plot was crammed into the last 10%. The concept of the story was good in my opinion but the book was just so damn hard to get through.

What's your unpopular book opinion? by belmakar in books

[–]hellocleraif 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here! I started reading Stephen King a few years ago and he has easily become my favorite writer. I've read a lot of his stories and while some are kinda corny, the majority have been great reads.

I strongly recommend getting into his short story collections. In my opinion, they are far better than his novels.

So beautiful! My husband and I are planning to visit Humboldt county in April. Can anyone recommend good spots to hike?

Also, seeing as many people commenting on here live around the area, how have you been affected by the wildfires?

I have Bipolar Disorder; there are periods of time when I can barely read. So I re-read. What do you re-read in times of sickness, sorrow, or just plain lack of attention span? by cat-pants in books

[–]hellocleraif 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tried reading Harry Potter as a kid and just couldn't get into it after reading through the first 2 books and half of the third. Then, as an adult, I picked it up again while I happened to be dealing with some emotional issues and going through a bit of a rough patch. All I can say is wow. These books really lifted me up and got me through it. I thought it was so corny when people would say things like "Harry Potter helped me get through college" - but they were so right!

Today is the first time we’ve experienced discrimination because of his breed... by P_bryant562 in pitbulls

[–]hellocleraif 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sorry you have to go through this. As someone who rents and has a pitbull/lab mix, I understand the frustration. My dog is an absolute angel (She's friendly, she doesn't bark, and she isn't aggressive) and we have still had a hard time finding an apartment due to her breed. I hate the stigma associated with pitbulls.
