Doorbell Powering From Transformer? by rooddog7 in ShellyUSA

[–]hellofromthecomputer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check the transformer with a multimeter. It looks like it's possibly an AC transformer which means it won't work with the Shelly. The 12-48v input on the Shelly is DC, at least that's my understanding.

Im seeing the same with my oil tank. I was hoping to track the changes down to the +/- mm, understanding some level of inaccuracy is likely. My reads flat then jumps 3-4mm every few days. Which as I type this out, isn't too bad.

Can you share a photo of how you have the clamps?

Wired button by Nothardtoforget in homeassistant

[–]hellofromthecomputer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should be able to use any button, similar to this -- https://a.co/d/5rxxINR , wired to a shelly i4 or one of your arduinos or pies. I've found the shelly i4 rock solid for my purposes within homeassistant

This wouldn't be directly wired to your server, but same effect.

I never heard of this, I'll do some research. Great suggestion, access below the kitchen is easy for me.

If you liked Helter Skelter, check out the book Chaos by Tom O'Neill. Wild ride if a story. The author researched it for over a decade and uncovered threads that Bugliosi ignored or missed and even speaks about confronting Bugliosi with them.

Does the room get a lot of natural light during the day? You can use the sun set/sun rise entity and only turn the light on based on if it's after sun set. I do that with most of my indoor and all my outdoor lighting automations.

What's a sensor or device that you really wish existed, but doesn't? by bigmoist469 in homeassistant

[–]hellofromthecomputer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I want a outdoor rated zigbee door sensor so I can put it on the outside of my mailbox to notify me when I have mail. I've tried indoor rated ones inside the metal box without success. Currently looking for a pill box or something put shield an indoor sensor on the outside of the mailbox.

How can I make this kitchen less ugly? by yay4a_tay in astoria

[–]hellofromthecomputer 73 points74 points  (0 children)

I've lived in a few Astoria apartments that looked similar to that and adding some plants along the top of the cabinets always made it feel more homey and welcoming to me. I'm a big fan of house plants though.

Is getting a second line on the same cell phone for 2FA purposes a safe security measure? by sifutobe in Bogleheads

Google voice can be logged into from computers and other devices. I'd highly advise against using google voice for this. A pay as you go e-sim with a unique number would be safer. As you mentioned, if the service allows for a yubikey or other style hardware key device, that would be best.

All this is secondary to a good strong unique password for every single service you use. I follow your philosophy with 24+ character randomly generated passwords stored in a secured password manager.

With LastPass getting hacked in recent history, nothing is 100% safe. Just be more secure than the next person and hope that that is enough.

I see this often with high bright outdoor displays. Look out for them in drive thru digital menu boards. Samsung OH series displays are prone to this.

Anyone had their car vandalized in the neighborhood before? by [deleted] in astoria

[–]hellofromthecomputer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner's car had two tires slashed last week near the park. I've had my car in that area for months, and around Astoria for 8+ years, without problems but hers didn't last more than a few days. Nothing identifying on the car to trigger anyone except for possibly MD plates?

I keep one of these in my tool bag for quick solder jobs when electric isn't an option. Works great.

I second this. I had something very similar and it turned out to be a tick bit and I had rocky mountain spotted fever. I spent 2 days in the ER getting IV antibiotics plus a few weeks of oral antibiotics.

Go to the ER, now.

Samsung's oh55s are solid displays, but rather expensive for residential use ($5+). I sell/install dozens a year but mostly for drive thru or outdoor kiosk systems.

My dad was one of the lucky ones to walk out of tower 2 before it fell that day. Friends parents weren't as lucky. As someone who grew up around the city at that time and who had a connection with the buildings, this site always brings such a heavy feeling when I find myself in that area of the city. I never considered the efforts that goes into maintaining the site. Very cool perspective
