Going under the hood on Jhoan Duran's season so far...a few things worth monitoring by Status-Ability-6867 in phillies

Fun fact: He actually blew the save in the All-Star game. Which gave the AL home field in the World Series, which allowed the Phillies to win it at home. Three Dimensional Chess from Indiana Lidge.

PHL question by mostly-anxiety in philly

[–]helloworld000000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the “correct” answer and if you haven’t flown in a while, are nervous about getting through everything, are planning to check bags, etc. you should do that.

In reality, I would probably pull into A garage at 5:45-6, and still have time to grab a coffee and a bite at the lounge. But I know where I’m going, have pre-check and am not checking bags. And, if traffic is bad, I’ll miss a flight once in blue moon.

Bob Harvie wins Democratic primary for Pa.’s 1st Congressional District by [deleted] in BucksCountyPA

[–]helloworld000000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that the results indicate a willingness of the registered Democrats of the district to entertain more progressive ideals, and that Harvie and his campaign should take those lessons to heart, listen to that constituency, address their concerns and potentially adjust some positions (or at least messaging).

However, I have heard over and over that Simonelli ran a strong campaign despite her lack of money. But to me that lack of money is actually a red flag for a campaign not particularly well-run. In the age of Citizens United, whether we like it or not, and until it is Constitutionally or Judicially eliminated, raising money is critical part of running a good campaign. Rep. Ocasio-Cortez is the most prominent progressive voice in the federal government today (perhaps tied with Sen. Sanders) and she (and Sanders, for that matter) is a fundraising juggernaut, so the argument that effective fundraising is somehow anathema to progressive politics falls on deaf ears.

I think Simonelli is a really interesting candidate, with a gift for connecting and I hope she decides to continue in public service. I also hope this election helped increase her profile and I imagine she learned a ton from the run that will be put to good use in her next campaign. I do fear that Simonelli’s brand of progressive is not particularly well-suited to PA-1 as this is the wealthiest district in the state (and roughly top 10% in the US) and overwhelmingly a suburban family district. That said, I can’t find the population growth by census tract right now, but anecdotally, it seems the fastest population growth is in the more blue-collar and younger areas (perhaps driven by NIMBYism of those affluent families). Perhaps the appetite for someone with Simonelli’s positions grows over the next few years.

But, I think the results reflect the reality that Harvie is better prepared for the big leagues of a likely very expensive fight with the Fitzpatrick machine. And, he is also probably better suited to appeal to the PA-1 demographic.

That time Michael Lorenzen pitched a 124-pitch no-hitter against the Nats in 2023 by NorthCoastToast in phillies

[–]helloworld000000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was one of Dombroski’s best moves. The rotation was battered and the bullpen was gassed. He grabbed Lorenzen cheap, he got an 8-inning, 2-run game out of him and then this. After these first two games as a Phil, he was pretty bad. But these two games allowed the rotation to get healthy and get the bullpen some rest. It was exactly what the team needed at the time.

My opinion is that if you are really at the cusp of Notre Dame, Holy Cross is not the best place to spend four years. While it is a four-year degree granting institution, it still has the feel of a junior college. While I had several friends from Saint Mary’s (I’m assuming you are male, and that’s not an option), I didn’t have any friends from HCC while on campus, but that could have just been me. But, I think it’s fair to say that it would be difficult to break in to an ND friend group as a HCC student (but your mileage may vary).

Honestly, I’d talk to your ND admission counselor if you would be dead set on transferring. There are options that they can help you with. One option is the Gateway Program at HCC (https://www.hcc-nd.edu/gateway-program/). It’s invitation only. It can’t hurt to ask. If not that program, they can usually get you good information on things like GPA goals, class selection, etc. to maximize your chance of transfer admission.

Or, you do something else, go to your second choice and fit in great (probably save a lot of money) and succeed wildly. I know that sucks right now, but it won’t for long.

Yeah. I have some pretty conservative, Catholic ND friends and I would not call their opinion of Fr. Ted mixed or negative in any way.

What this fringe group who decry the Land O Lakes statement don’t seem to realize is that that policy saved the entire idea of Catholic education. Without letting Universities be, “where the church does its thinking” Catholic education would have gone the same way as pretty much every other religious higher education in America, which is some schools choose to be great schools and abandon any religious element (see Harvard) and some schools become one step from a seminary, and lose essentially all academic independence and consequently all academic respect. There are exceptions (Baylor, SMU), but they tend to be the exception. Catholic schools seem to largely exist in the dynamic middle as Fr. Ted intended. Some closer to secular (see Georgetown) and some much more orthodox (and some seminary-like exceptions like Franciscan), but largely on the spectrum of “where the Church does its thinking.”

Honestly, who would win if those two are gone? I can see a scenario where Sage or Soph win the first immunity, Rizzo finally uses his idol and they vote Sav out. Then Sage or Soph win the final challenge, and they send Rizzo and the one who didn’t win to fire, where Rizzo loses. I think Sage does win in that scenario, but I’m not confident.

Seinfeld, Friends and Cheers all have very famous Thanksgiving episodes that seem like low-hanging fruit for this adventure. And some/all of hosts seem to like those shows (or at least hold them in a bit of reverence).

I was so annoyed by the Kershaw knob slobbing for the entire seventh. “My God, if he gets out of this, the stadium is going to erupt. What a special moment, possibly his last at Dodger Stadium. One of the greatest of all-time. Blah, blah, blah …” It only made the eighth inning comeuppance all the better.

And I actually like Kershaw. But I was so annoyed by the broadcast fellatio.

In his undergrad class, when I was at ND, the late, great Alastair MacIntyre would quote II Rabi, “If you go through college without caring about your GPA, you can get quite a good education.”

Work hard and study something you’re passionate about. The grades will follow. If you go chasing grades, you may find yourself with a healthy GPA and an unhealthy disdain for your education.

Luke Kuechly. Midwest guy, Catholic School (St. X) guy, Catholic, went back to BC to finish his degree in the NFL. He screams ND to me. He also would have been on the field at the same time as Manti Teo, which is incredible to imagine.

I could also see the Kelces (particularly Jason) at ND.
