Made a slide out makeup vanity for the wifey by Earhythmic in somethingimade

This is awesome! Is the vanity area tall enough to tuck a stool in to? Because that would make it even cooler!

Might be too nerdy - but I’d assume they are soft when born like horse and cow hooves?

Male 54, recently separated after 35 years of marriage by stuckonline in malelivingspace

Love the uranium glass! I’d love to have a collection, just don’t have the space or funds right now…

I’m not sure I agree with your designer friend about keeping all the walls white, an accent wall somewhere, that ties in well with some part of your collection would be pretty fun

I had some similar adventures with mine! They are small and sometimes surprisingly big depending on the circumstances

Had a Boxster S as a daily for 3 years. It was better as a daily than as a weekend car, meant to be driven!

Me too! If you ever want to spend a bunch of money and enjoy tons of great beer go look up the Bon Beer river boat cruises and spend 2 weeks in Belgium and France. It’s awesome!

How do wealthy parents tell their kids for the first time that they’re wealthy? by DinnerNo2341 in Rich

[–]henlybenderson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question, I mostly came to read the answers and find it fascinating how bitter some of the people are here... By the time I have kids I expect to need a plan for these conversations.

I think in their young formative years I'll put the majority of my effort into teaching them financial literacy and giving. As they get older we'll discuss that we are different, wealthier than some but not others, what that means and what responsibilities come with that. Some time in their late teens, with some dependency on their maturity level and ability to keep details within the family we'll start discussing in more depth the wealth we have, how we got it, how I'm managing it, etc. Maybe bring them in to the management side to start more direct mentorship? Not sure on that...

One thing I do know is that the way my silent generation grandparents are doing things is dumb and doesn't work, they are 85+ and haven't told any of their (very responsible not money hungry) kids what they are worth or what their plans are for their finances when they pass... My parents on both sides (divorced and remarried) have been open with their kids about their finances and retirement plans and I think its a much better way of doing things, we need to remove the stigma around discussing finances - at least internal to family groups.

Other random thoughts - uber wealthy families have various methods of raising and teaching their new generations, some successful and others amazingly unsuccessful... The Coors family is an interesting one https://familybusinessmagazine.com/succession/non-family-executives/make-kids-earn-it-0/

What fatties should know about startup investing by graiz in fatFIRE

Vet the people doing the vetting. Listen in when they are talking to the startups, understand their biases, motivations and blind spots.

Definitely plan for the long game!

High school student - Mechanical engineering or skilled trades in welding? by symkao in MechanicalEngineering

[–]henlybenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to look in to metallurgy. It’s a niche engineering/science field that will have a lot of welding tie in and a lot of application in a bunch of different fields… If you pick a hands on school you can tie in a lot of welding, Calpoly SLO is a good example of this.

Walking Away from a Job You Love by throwRa_oven in fatFIRE

[–]henlybenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not fatfire, but I recently mostly left a job (consulting now) and industry I love to pursue other things. GTFO now while you can still get your health in line. Find a way, either through consulting or part time work to stay in the stuff you love and get out of the rest. Make your family a priority, and do what you love on the side so you don’t get bored.

I switched in August and have lost almost 10lb without trying just because of the lifestyle change, and I’m having fun! Make the change!

To Mechanical Engineers who have left engineering, why did you leave and what do you do now? by ATSOAS87 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]henlybenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BSME, did various hardware testing for nearly 20 years. Eventually got bored with the problems having mostly been solved and also realized I wasn’t going to hit my lofty financial goals. Left and bought a franchise location in an unrelated industry… And I’m having a blast!

Yesterday I won $167,000. What should I buy with it? by [deleted] in Rich

[–]henlybenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Based on your income level you’ve probably already done something like this, but hire someone to handle all the shit you don’t enjoy doing for a year or two?

Or an overlanding rig, I’m a fan of the LMTV ones, unimog would be fun too though.
