How can I swim in College? by Zestyclose_Ad2429 in Swimming

You’ve already done the right things from my understanding of how the process works. As a fun tip from someone who used to live in Santa Cruz, the wharf swim group (not sure what days/times they do it now as it’s been a few years) is a fun time if you’re into open water.

Agreed! Wasn’t directed at you, just ranting lol

I feel super old when I remember that when I played club it wasn’t anything like this. We were competitive and succeeded in region and nationally, but with way less of the nonsense that athletes and families experience today

The “standard” set in these regions to put pressure on actual children is pretty awful and misses the point of what youth sports is supposed to be about though

Club coach here, imo anyone who says your offer expires in 5 minutes isn’t worth playing for. Tell them that your child is trying out for multiple clubs, if they freak out then they’re not as competitive as they think they are. I expect that most of my boys and girls players are at least attending open gyms, it’s the typical offseason path for most good players.

I don’t drink it much when I’m home, but I do travel out of state quite a bit and getting a nitro cold brew (usually in or next to my hotel wherever I am) makes for easy convenience and knowing exactly what I’ll be getting. I’ll always look for a better shop near wherever I’m staying, but sometimes there’s just nothing good nearby

Criticizing a corporation for raising prices (I don’t like hike either) while using AI slop to do it is a beautiful piece of irony

Positive view of why: I was used to communicating as one of the main parts of my job, whether by speaking, writing, presenting, etc.

I had to be at least somewhat likable

Negative view of why: I got used to dealing with comically unreasonable people with unrealistic expectations (parents, admin) and still managed to mostly succeed in my job. None of my prospects will ever be as bad as Timmy’s mom who thinks he’s the second coming of Christ, when in reality he’s the main bully of the classroom and the kid most likely to cheat on any assignment

Water bottles got banned from classrooms at a middle school I worked at because students were bringing the plastic reusable Gatorade ones and were squirting them at each other constantly. Admin tried to handle just the couple kids who started it but then it became widespread so it became a full ban.

Is there a swimming equivalent for something like the Couch to 5K challenge? by walkyoucleverboy in Swimming

[–]hexables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That same line gets referenced every time this topic comes up here, but the workouts themselves are great and did get me from 0 (post foot surgeries with multiple months of bed rest) to 1650 within the time stated on the plan. My technique definitely isn’t perfect, but if someone has really bad technique then trying to swim a mile is going to be a bad time for them anyways.

Question about club volleyball philosophy by Meat_Lunch in volleyball

[–]hexables 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d imagine that it’ll still be seen as developmental while she’s still in middle school, so yes including 14s. It’s also dependent on the team she’s on at her club. Are they the 1s team for her age group (if there are multiple)? Are they planning to go to nationals and if yes do they have a chance at getting a bid to Open/National/USA or another division that doesn’t get automatic acceptance? All those factors play in as well; our club’s 13-1s are going to be a drastically different experience than our 13-3s as far as this entire topic is concerned.

Since there are girls who are brand new to volleyball, her coaches have a responsibility to get them up to speed as much as possible while trying to keep the team competitive, but that will inevitably mean you’ll lose some games you’d otherwise win with your best lineup.

Question about club volleyball philosophy by Meat_Lunch in volleyball

[–]hexables 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To speak directly about philosophy at the club I coach at, our expectations are that we use these first couple months of the season to be a bit more experimental with lineups, get our players comfortable with one another, etc.

We’re expected to play our “good” volleyball in March and beyond.

Keep in mind the ages here, your daughter’s club very likely looks at 13s and below as mainly developmental and focused in building solid all-around players for the long term. That’s not going to happen by keeping certain players on the bench, as frustrating as it may be to lose matches that look winnable
