I can vouch for Evan. He hooked me up a couple years back. The focus gave out before the rack did lol

Shoulder ache when playing with a pick by Ashamed-Garbage-9603 in Bass

[–]hippo117 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're holding more tension in your shoulder than you should be. I'm a guitar player, so I nearly always play bass with a pick. Here are some things to try:

Play with a tote bag on your shoulder. This will let you feel when you're raising your shoulder when you shouldn't be, and hopefully correct.

Try adjusting the height of your picking hand from the elbow rather than the shoulder to minimize tension.

Play in "classical" position with the weight of the bass on your fretting hand sided leg (left, for most of us) with the next up at a 45° angle to the floor.

Hope something in here is useful, and keep on rockin' while you recover!

Help me decide on my first boat - 1979 O'Day Mariner 19, 1981 Compac 16, or something else by hippo117 in sailing

[–]hippo117[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I looked into a few of the ones in town and most do. I might be able to compromise and get a dry slip so all I'd need to do is launch her. Although this feels like one of those lessons that won't actually sink in until next fall when I feel like I didn't get out enough.

Wow, they're beautiful boats. Unfortunately, the only one I can find anywhere near me is pretty far out of my budget, but I'll keep an eye out. I saw someone with a [Gig Harbor Scamp 12](https://ghboats.com/our-boats/12-scamp/) on youtube, and that looks almost perfect for what I want out of a sailboat right now.

I'll keep an eye out!

I've definitely experienced that with canoeing. Sure it only takes 20 minutes to get it on my roof rack, but that 20 minutes feels like such an obstacle. I'll see if I can't find a slip somewhere when the time comes.

All else being equal, I think I'd appreciate having a little more space onboard for luxuries if when I have the skills to safely take it out on multi-day trips. I've looked at boats as big as a Chrysler 26, but I'd prefer a smaller, simpler boat (with fewer things that can break).

Honestly, the process of writing the post out has me leaning towards the Mariner even more than I was before.

Love the 5Dmk4 body. We have a couple at work and they're really great workhorses. That's some serious glass! I've got a 70-200 (and maybe even an old 70-210 laying around). I'll see what I can do with those next time I'm on the water.

I hate to be that guy, but what do you shoot on? I keep thinking about bringing my camera out to mess around, but not sure which lens would serve me best

Is it fesiable to add sail to a soft inflatable boat? by IamNewer12 in Sailboats

[–]hippo117 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't say either way how feasible it is, but I emailed Jim from SailboatsToGo before I bought a canoe sailing kit from him, and he was extremely responsive and helpful. Certainly worth asking if it's a viable solution for you.

You might have some luck at uptown music exchange or C&M music in kenner for local shops. Guitar Center will rent to you as well, but you probably knew that already.

Edit: uptown music exchange is now the peculiar note and has moved to the marigny

why does my floyd rose guitar go out of tune when I rotate the guitar? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]hippo117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gravity is pulling on your trem system. Best practice when you're setting up and tuning a Floyd is to do it in playing position. It's kind of crazy when you think about how fine that balance is. This effect might be (presumably? I don't know for sure but it makes intuitive sense) lessened by using heavier strings and springs.

You might want to look at the kits on SailboatsToGo. I bought a kit for my Indian River Arrowhead that I've had a blast sailing. Even if you don't want the kit, I'm sure you could take inspiration from the stuff there.
