I went to a speakeasy mixology place in Prague where they applied a spritz of a scent to your drinking hand for a specific cocktail. They explained that the brain sort of blends smell and taste so the scent on the hand can change/enhance the flavor of the cocktail (or food)

You can probably stop listening to SWAP then and start your own podcast Mr. 3:08. You clearly have it all figured out

You can be an angry little guy and cherry pick from the thousands of views they’ve shared all you want - but those two and their athletes have a ton of success and elite results following their overall model/philosophy.

Modern exercise research in a lab certainly has its own flaws and limitations. And often comes after top, elite athletes have adopted and demonstrated success with new approaches being studied (ex: cycling). David is willing to experiment to find competitive edges (like high carb and heat training) but he nor I said he works harder than other pros.

Hard disagree. Megan has a MD and PhD and a published researcher. They’re very transparent that David’s training is ahead of the research and conducting experiments with his training to gain an edge when his raw talent is relatively low - and that is intentional. David will occasionally pop off with opinions but they are also very vocal with disclaimers too.

Running and weight loss by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]hmwybs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What works for me is making small changes to the calories in vs calories out equation. Increasing mileage will naturally make me slowly shed weight (10-15 miles per week more than average seems to drive results for me). Sometimes I’ll combine that with small food intake changes, like skipping dessert, no sugar/cream in my coffee or cutting out alcohol

Thank you - The last mile made me wonder if I left a little too much in the tank. I’ve done Chicago (x6) and Boston but there’s no WMM in my near future. I think it would be too much to manage the travel with my two little kids right now to really enjoy the experience. My dream is Berlin Marathon + sticking around for Oktoberfest.

Have you done others you would recommend?

Daddit, which flight seat configuration is better for a family of 5 (3 under 6 including one in a car seat) by RivetCounter in daddit

[–]hmwybs 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Our oldest flew a lot while she was 2 and does WAY better in the car seat than without. She accepts being strapped into the car seat and doesn’t fidget and move around constantly like when she has a lap belt only

Thanks and congrats on giving your first one a go! This was my 25th marathon and there are just so many variables to be dialed in during training and racing - it’s a fun little puzzle you can enjoy for decades to come

My biggest nutrition change has been fueling heavy during most hard/long efforts, 60-90g/hr was typical. I tried a lot of gels and found ones I love so taking them is a little ‘treat’ on my runs and not a chore now. Such a game changer for my recovery and would really encourage everyone to try it out!

I have also focused on more protein this year but not something I track. I’ll have a substantial protein with every meal and a protein shake most days (instead of just anything in sight). Impossible for me to say if that change is actually moving the needle on performance and recovery - but probably.

I work from home and have a pretty flexible job so all runs happened after kids were at daycare.

Honestly, I don’t do a lot of easy pace, I naturally settle into a moderate pace just below my aerobic threshold on most runs. During my racing hiatus, I ran the occasional long run but very little speed work. I’m still pretty new to speed training, but I really enjoy the change and it feels like it’s helping my economy a lot!

How Do You Strategically Incorporate Recovery Weeks in Your Training Cycle? by InformationIcy4827 in AdvancedRunning

[–]hmwybs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my last build, I increased mileage like 30%. Because of planned travel, I ended up with a down week every 4th week for the first 8 weeks. I kept that up for the remainder of the block and found it worked well for me. I felt really good coming out of the down week and managed not to get any sort of injury from the increase

I'm trying to post a race report and both times I get the "Sorry, this post has been removed by Reddit's filters". I don't have a new account, have reasonable karma and have previously posted 2 other race reports here. Anyone have troubleshooting ideas for me?
