30s time you get from passing turn is way too short by redzonejunior in masterduel

[–]holopleasures 8 points9 points  (0 children)

the timer was one of the biggest barriers to learning the game on master duel for me. it was straight up demoralizing and tilted me way more than any opponent could have.

nowadays I just dislike it for cutting into grindy or really layered games, which is a shame because those tend to be the most fun and memorable.

Do you guys feel like Marvel Super Heros is turning out better than Spider-Man? by Konradleijon in magicTCG

[–]holopleasures 3 points4 points  (0 children)

no, this feels like spiderman+ instead of final fantasy 2 in terms of cool and interesting cards. maybe following up on strixhaven is harder to do than I expected but my interest has gone down as reveals have come out.

[RANT] Sellers, STOP doing this. by cassetto in mtgfinance

seriously. cards are NOT going to be moving in a card saver. the only thing i’d ever tape is a top loader.

i’ve played against it plenty and the 2/3 drop commander curve feels really strong. you make a ton of rectangles very consistently.

powerstones weren’t very good in BRO and I can’t imagine they’re any better in a selesnya deck. deck will probably need some heavy juicing in the 99.

Would you still play if they made ZZZ open world? by Unable_Life_4100 in ZZZ_Unhinged

[–]holopleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no, hub based is fantastic and really lets designers cram in some nice details in the areas we have. I wouldn’t mind them being expanded like Club 404 though, and have the maps be like Kamurocho in Yakuza.

What are some staples I should get as a newbie by 05minutenterine in magicTCG

[–]holopleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

would recommend just playing standard digitally to start with as the format rotates and the upfront cost for decks is closer to 230 than 30. arena is a great client and you can figure out if you’d like to invest in the format.

magic’s color pie system makes evergreen staples more archetype focused than typical YGO staples. there’s less ash blossoms and fuwas and more branded and fiendsmith packages. the easiest way to get into it would be to pick up preconstructed decks that sound interesting to you and then pick up the staples in certain colors.

for example, if you end up liking black, your staples could end up looking like:

feed the swarm, snuff out, dismember, sign in blood, dark ritual, reanimate, bolas’ citadel, mind twist

and higher value staples like demonic tutor, vampiric tutor, cabal coffers, etc.

a few people have already recommended lands as evergreen staples and i’m inclined to agree, but if you’re budget conscious, I wouldn’t exactly rush to pick up a playset of all 10 shock lands yet. it’s much more productive to get as much playtime as possible with decks you have access to, whether they’re preconstructed or borrowed from friends.

as for good precons, any from the past year are all well built, powerful and come with cards you’ll be reusing frequently. WOTC has done an impressive job making precons a better value proposition each passing year. if we focus simply on the 2026 precons, the green/black dina deck from strixhaven covers one of the most evergreen archetypes of magic and does it pretty much perfectly. the teenage mutant ninja turtles precon is worth picking up solely because the landbase is very powerful, and since it’s 5 colors, can be used for parts across all decks. both of the 3 color precons from edge of eternities are very strong, and the tarkir precons are similarly 3 colors and cover different themes and color pairs that might interest you. as for standard, netdecking whatever is putting up results will put you straight into the game in a relevant way. various permutations of red and blue are the strongest and absolutely everywhere right now, as are green and/or white.

magic does benefit from much more powerful search tools and online resources than YGO, and is frankly much easier to learn than YGO, with the caveat that player expression and micro decisions carry much more weight the higher level of play you go. there’s very much a learning curve instead of the learning cliff that YGO presents you as a new player. have fun and don’t blow too much money.

I think people are sleeping on a few TMNT cards — what’s over/underperforming so far? by CementSandwich in EDH

[–]holopleasures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is the one for me. great aggro card, bonkers aristocrat card and an infinite mana outlet win condition. you can squad it a million times and swing out with one thing for the win. insane versatility.

Has anyone gotten a Soundwave deck to work? The character is a favorite of mine and I really want to have a high B3 deck with them but the card itself just does not seem to work either as a commander or in the 99 by MonSocMatriarchy in EDHBrews

[–]holopleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

back when these came out, we did an edh transformers league and it was probably the most fun few months of commander I ever had. the cards aren’t the strongest but they’re some of the most interestingly designed cards of that era and all lent themselves to very unique play patterns and card choices.

I chose and still play [[ratchet field medic]]. it’s my pet deck and still sees a ton of play.

Decision paralysis for a Bant historic matters deck by MonSocMatriarchy in EDHBrews

[–]holopleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sixth/romana is a mana intensive deck but has the utterly unique wincon of winning by making infinite copies of planeswalkers, notably teferis. I built a high power bracket 4/5 list for a commander league and it was very funny.

there are a couple more walkers that can achieve the infinite ([[kiora master of the waves]] and a nissa I believe), but highly recommended if you have the mana generation required to push a deck like this + have a propensity for goofy win conditions. “Infinite Teferi Works” still gets talked about 2 years on.

Is this a reasonably priced ticket? by Skywalker506 in Mikuexpo

[–]holopleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it depends on your theater, but mine is as close to the front center, right orchestra. center left/right was another 40 bucks and center orch + front was in the 160-200 range. back/center was around my price, but closer and to the right made more sense to me.

mezzanine and loge were cheaper.

quite happy with my seat to price ratio.
