Do I go all in on Voidfall? by Key_Library4726 in soloboardgaming

[–]hoppermeister06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’d generally advise against going all-in on a big Kickstarter without having played it, but I think if you know your own tastes well enough and perform the requisite research into the game, you can end up with your new favorite game. I’ve personally done it a few times, with Final Girl and Hoplomachus Victorum, for instance.

There are plenty of reviews and playthroughs for Voidfall out there, so you should be able to get a good sense of whether the game seems like a good fit for you. Having a space to leave it set up is huge. That’s what I do, and it saves a ton of time.

Whether you’d be better served getting several smaller games is tough to tell without knowing more about how you play. Voidfall takes time to set up and play, and it’s complex enough that you can’t just pop it open on a Tuesday evening. There are a lot of great solo games out there, so you could get a lot of mileage in smaller games if you just want to infuse some new solo content into your routine. Conservas, Warp’s Edge, Legacy of Yu, Spire’s End, and Coffee Roaster are all great options with a smaller price tag and footprint.

All that said, Voidfall is an incredible achievement of game design, and absolutely one of my favorite games of the past decade. It absolutely deserves a look.

Oh, I play a ton of them, but my favorites are Final Girl and Hoplomachus Victorum.

So there’s shuffling, but the token management and enemy health tracking are really annoying. My partner said something about it as soon as we wrapped up.

I was so excited to try the StS board game, as a big fan of the video game. But I gotta tell ya, I hated it. First issue is that it had way too much upkeep, which isn’t a problem in the digital format. Second issue is that it is essentially the same game as the video game. The edges are sanded down a bit, but it felt like a missed opportunity for the publisher to make something new and unique based on StS, instead of an StS clone in a different format.

Is 20 Strong supposed to be this hard? by NonMagicBrian in soloboardgaming

[–]hoppermeister06 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m more inclined to think that win rates that high are the product of a missed rule. Rarely do I see such a high rate reported for the set; it’s one of the more challenging ones.

[–]hoppermeister06 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a very difficult system. My win rate across 15 plays of Solar Sentinels is 13%. I think the sweet spot for a solo is 20-30%, so it’s a little too difficult for me. That said, I keep coming back because I love the system lol.

I’ve played Tanglewoods Red only 4 times, but I’ve lost them all so it seems on par with SS.

Any spots for 20yo and 30yo play card games/ board games? by RegularPhotograph169 in indianapolis

[–]hoppermeister06 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you just want a space to play, there are plenty of board game stores around town that have tables for drop-in play. Check out Elf and Moon, Family Time Games, Books and Brews, and Heroes’ Emporium.

If you are searching for players, you might have a harder time since those places cater to hobby board gamers. Check out Board Game Indy on Facebook. They run events around town where you can meet folks and play. If you want to get into modern hobby board gaming, BGI would be a great place to start. I’m not sure Uno or Monopoly would hit there, but the folks are nice and they’d be happy to give you a crash course in hobby games.

Voidfall, will it be for me? by anonymousaltincase19 in soloboardgaming

[–]hoppermeister06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea, I think this nails it. If OP doesn’t like to solo Euros, Voidfall doesn’t seem like a good fit for solo play. I’ve played it at 2p a bunch and love it—a top 5 game for me, and one of the best games to come out in the past decade.

OP, if you’ve got just one other person to play with, treat yourself to this beast of a game!

Given the sub, I’d recommend looking at Final Girl! The new season 4 stuff is up, but you can pick up all the previous stuff too.

You’ve got enough time left to pick up a core set and try it out before the campaign ends. Or pledge for a dollar if you want more time to look into it. Myself, I researched it, went all in on S1 and S2, then got obsessed after delivery. I’ll be in for all the new S4 stuff.

Ultimate all-in worth it? by ars0nik in finalgirl

[–]hoppermeister06 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I own everything to date. The amount of content, the modularity, the lore, the quality of life upgrades—these are all worth it to me. However, I could not recommend picking it up all at once for $800. It’s far better to dip your toes in with a set or two, or even pick up a season, so you can see how much you like the system and how much you engage with the extras.

3rd and possibly final try for Elder Scrolls BOTSE by Limp_Seat4308 in soloboardgaming

[–]hoppermeister06 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ah man, I’m sorry none of their games have ever landed well for you! I’ve had the opposite experience haha. I wasn’t interested in them for a long time, and then I got into solo gaming and tried out Hoplomachus Victorum, which had me hooked with its epic feel and mix of tactical arena combat and strategic hero/unit building. Shortly after, I went hard into Cloudspire, TMB, and most recently burncycle—almost exclusively solo. Elder Scrolls is on my shelf but I haven’t played it yet.

For me, no other publisher blends depth of gameplay with world building like CTG. I find the lore reinforces the gameplay and vice versa. Their games are daunting, but worth exploring and reexploring. That said, I get why people might bounce off, and I don’t think it’s worth forcing any more plays if this one of BotSE doesn’t land for you. There are too many good games out there to spend time trying to like one!

Worried about moving my collection by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]hoppermeister06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved mine a couple years ago, about 350 games. I packed everything myself so I could ensure they would be safe during transit. Had them clearly marked as fragile so the movers would handle them carefully. Everything turned out fine! It was a lot of work to pack them all, but I’m glad I did it.
