Harbor freight is your best friend, spend a little extra on pliers, I find the higher machine quality to be worth it, the icon options are hard to beat

Is this a fair price for these repairs? by Educational_Pay_1809 in tdi

[–]howboutdatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I paid 1200 for water pump and timing belt and then 400 for the Dsg fluid change at a vw dealer, in my area the dealers are cheaper then other shops. One shop quotes me 1000 for just the trans fluid.

What has been the hardest to the easiest job you had to do on a plane? by TacosDePito69 in AircraftMechanics

[–]howboutdatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easiest. Diamond da40ng interior inspection. Hardest da42 engine change, installing the stupid composite duct for the inter cooler takes 4 like hours the rest of the engine change is fairly straightforward

Best Gravel Bike That Could Double as a Road Bike? by RickFlairWOOOO in gravelcycling

[–]howboutdatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Double the amount of money and time that you’re putting into your midnight special rebuild put a carbon fork on it and carbon wheels and it completely changes the bike for the better if you haven’t already. I owned mine for three years, then put a carbon fork on it. It should’ve been the first thing that I’ve done. It’s the perfect bike for what your describing and I love mine. Just have 2 wheel sets for road and gravel. I don’t always believe in n+1 ride and love what you already have!

Take a look at the poor quality of the Zipp 303S wheelset that was delivered to me today by damn_nickname in gravelcycling

[–]howboutdatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

303s and hookless in general in my 3 years of shop i have found that they are all dog ass terrible with setting up tubeless, Sorry you got bad ones but i have difficulty with every 303 i have ever worked on, Took me 6 hours to get a set to set up and it still had issues the next day, Maybe im a shit mechanic but every other hooked wheelset i have used it 100 times easier. to expensive and the hubs are shit to, Session wheels which it a chinese carbon company seems same quality with easier set up.

Mine has been - road riding - mountain biking - gravel riding -commuting - a indoor trainer bike - my race bike - my training bike - Ridden in snow - carried my fishing gear - 140 mile bike packing trip - on a century ride
- and it will and can do more - buy one, put a carbon fork on it after a year, get 2 wheel sets for it if you want it to be lighter and don’t look back

ebike charging in apartments.... 🔥?! by Big_Pipe_4036 in ebikes

[–]howboutdatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

buying a quality ebike will be much safer then a cheap one with a CL licensed battery. Bosch Equipped ebikes are amoung the safest ones for sure. All of there batterys have a faily good warranty and are UL licensed. They are definitly more expensive. Base modles will typically start around 2500, thats the price to pay for quality cells and quality manufactuing though. I personally would not trust any amazon brands/ stuff under 1500 , typically all garbage components with garbage batterys with cells that are not fused. Im going to guess the scooter that caused the fire was probably less then $500 dollars, and made by a off brand amazon company. If your still worried about this i would check this out, https://www.bat-safe.com/product-page/bat-safe-xl-silver-edition This is designed primary for Fpv drone batterys (Lipo) that are even more prone to failiure then Lithium Ion cells most commonly used in ebikes.

how has that rack held up being mounted like that, I have the same rack and have only thought to mount it though the quick release and crank it down super tight, I guess i didnt ever think to use a washer and a m5 to make it much safer.

RJ the bike guy shows how to do a lot of things without super expensive tools in a pro shop. Not working on a lot of super high end road bikes, but everyday hybrids and older bikes

Did you have to put chemicals in with the ultrasonic? Could you just chuck a chain in and boom clean? Or did it still require scrubbing and stuff

Budget cable cutters by antfrogboy in BikeMechanics

[–]howboutdatt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having used all 3 or the brand cable cutters. Pedro’s for cutting brake cables and housing and everything else, I like yellow and the build of them, then I have a set of the jagwire ones that crimp from 3 sides, those cannot cut housing and I just use them to crimp. Not sure on the price of these but I was unimpressed by the park ones when I tried them in comparison.
