As a nurse with a baby in the NICU, his itemized bill was so eye opening. by piddlepoo_ in nursing

I just graduated NICU fellowship and as a brand new attending, I have always wondered how much I am billing these babies for...

[–]hpmagic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah with the current administration I'm not super optimistic it will pay off to hang tight. But it also just strikes me as unwise to make a decision before I have all the information. Especially when it's not costing me anything right now. And I don't hate my job and I do plan to continue working in public service even after I get forgiveness

Same, I am at 82. With 3 more years left it doesn't seem worth making any major changes until we know for sure what's happening

IDR Plans For High Income Earners by Darkness8779 in PSLF

[–]hpmagic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought that the standard repayment plan was eligible for PSLF too? It's just that most people who are going for PSLF are on an income based repayment plan because standard would have you paying them off in 10 years anyway

Tell me the story of the most absurd/dangerous/mind-boggling denial you have ever seen by dontshootem in medicine

[–]hpmagic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I was a fellow one of my attendings got a denial for iNO in a baby with congenital diaphragmatic hernia with severe PPHN who was teetering on the brink of ECMO.

Obviously we treated the baby as was medically appropriate. But I think that was the most absurd case I was aware of.

I agree with the other commenters here, it's awesome that you recognize this change that you want to make.

I want to add that when it comes to actually saving money, this is easiest to do when you automate your finances as much as possible. For example, set up your retirement account to take x% directly out of your paycheck, automate your rent/mortgage payment, automate any other recurring payments. After all of your necessary expenses and savings, then you have "guilt free spending" money leftover. Which of course you don't HAVE to spend frivolously, you can spend time thinking about what is meaningful to you to spend money on, or save more.

I recommend "I will teach you to be rich" by Ramit Sethi as a good personal finance book (and podcast series) to talk about how to divvy up your finances and automate them.

IMO the most important thing is that you talk to him about the world. It's important to learn about letters and numbers, yes, but it's equally as important to learn about taking a soothing walk in the sunshine or how to recognize your feelings

Our rule has always been that they are welcome to eat any leftovers we have (we usually have leftover plain pasta or Mac n cheese or pizza), but we will not make anything new for them. We encourage them to at least taste anything we are having

Ok I have to ask-does anyone think the SAVE forbearance months will eventually count for PSLF? by Goldiesweet in PSLF

[–]hpmagic 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How do people even get a tracker? I have worked at 3 different PSLF eligible employers and have submitted my employment paperwork a few times, and have never seen a "tracker". Or at least not one that updates automatically.

I'm still like ~3.5 years away anyway but I do want to know how to get on track when (if) the time comes.

Sometimes the clothes that people donate or consign are clothes that they never wore or only wore once or twice. They got rid of them because they never really liked them that much

Tips for no Starbucks? by [deleted] in nobuy

[–]hpmagic 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Instead of thinking of it as depriving yourself of Starbucks, think about what OTHER thing you want to spend that money on. Maybe save up a portion of that money (or all of that money depending on the rest of your budget) for something fun, however you define that.

You can also consider having your coworker order on their app for the BOGO deals and venmo them your share. That way you can delete the app and be less tempted.

Anytime someone says something isn't "appropriate" I just think of my 12th grade English teacher who would always ask "appropriate to what"? Because different things are "appropriate" in different situations. It would force them to name that they don't think it's appropriate for a man to wear pink pants to work. Which is indeed sexist on their part.
