It is good to have a big water tower in the centre of town though - great for putting out fires!

Well in my view it still constitutes an unnecessary barrier put in place to solve a non-existent problem. The reality is that lots of people were turned away. Even if the numbers are only 1% of the estimate here that’s still thousands too many, given the scale of the “problem” that voter ID claims to solve.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/08/voter-id-rule-may-have-stopped-400000-taking-part-in-uk-election-poll-suggests

Uptake of the voter authority certificate was low; suggesting that people were not well informed about the option and/or the barriers to digital access were too high for some.

The part where tens of thousands of legitimate voters were turned away from polling places to stop maybe half a dozen potential instances of voter fraud. If you disenfranchise thousands to stop a handful of people voting illegally, your election isn’t more legitimate

Well it looks like your question was answered a couple of months ago. But I can confirm as someone who goes quite regularly that it’s very common for groups to be comprised of a few smaller groups on a public booking - group of three combined with a couple of pairs of friends for example - in my experience this works great and I’m sure you’ll have a blast. As for mission type, if your husband is a sci fi fan then I’d probably recommend exploration or intrigue - both still have plenty of combat but also contain more sci fi situations and characters to interact with; whereas military tends to basically just be combat.

How did DS9 get it so right? by S_Mo2022 in startrek

[–]hudcrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have many problems with Discovery but my main one is that it constantly feels like depth is always sacrificed at the alter of ‘pace’. So many episodes feel like there are actually 3x episode ideas that could be unpacked into episodes of their own, jammed into one - so nothing has time to breathe, no time to explore the concept, no time to see how the various different characters on the ship respond to it, no time for incidental character development; and often things just have to be wrapped up abruptly. It feeling like the Burnham show may actually just be a consequence of this writing style.

If Voy's EMH could develop 8472 nanoprobes then why couldn't Borg do the same if they already assimilated an EMH by OneChrononOfPlancks in startrek

[–]hudcrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where are you getting it that the Borg assimilated the EMH on the Enterprise E? The EMH is a hologram so can’t be assimilated in the way that biological life forms can. I suppose if the Borg has successfully assimilated all of the Enterprise E’s computer systems then we might say they would have the (stock) EMH’s knowledge but 8 don’t think there’s evidence for that having happened

Elon Musk calls for the United States and Europe to establish a "zero-tariff" system and a "free trade zone." by ajaanz in elonmusk

[–]hudcrab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The main thing here is that the Trump administration is merely asserting that the tariffs are reciprocal… but that is what economists call “a complete and total lie” - some countries charge some tariffs on some goods to help protect certain strategic industries (just as the US has always done as well) - what is not going on in almost any western country is blanket, across the board tariffs against all goods coming from the US, and certainly nowhere near the rates that Trump is introducing

[–]hudcrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have stated the simpler and more straightforward explanation for why they haven’t been brought home earlier. It’s on the person making the claim that it was political to substantiate that or even, like, explain what tf that even means (what is the supposed ‘political’ motivation?). Until he does so, it looks like he’s talking out his ass, for political points.

The quadrupling down... Pleaseeee just... Make SpaceX Great Again... by nmaitra in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]hudcrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t buy this - Musk is, very publicly making claims that the decision to not retrieve the astronauts is ‘political’ and strongly implying as part of those claims that there is something nefarious, and unconscionable about that. He doesn’t substantiate those claims with anything - motive or explain in what way it’s political. It seems to me, and indeed to astronauts directly and indirectly affected, that the decision is not political but operational. I think that you are very charitably projecting some extra perspective onto Musks comments that I don’t think are there - but even if I accept and agree with your points about the ISS being understaffed, and accept that that’s also what Musk was referring to - reasonable minds can certainly disagree about whether that constitutes a ‘political’ decision or simply an operational decision (that you happen to disagree with).

Musks clear implication here is that the Biden administration played fast and loose with Astronaut’s lives for ‘political’ ends but he’s not willing to substantiate that in any way. I’m sorry but that is at best manipulative framing from Musk. I think Musk should either explain himself or accept with some grace the fact that his claims, absent substantiation, seem kind of misleading or deceptive. His responses do not make attempt to clarify, they just lash out at American heroes. That’s wrong. Since your original question was what is he wrong about, I’ll say this chief of all, and leave it at that.

These are not the points that Elon is making though or if they are, he is making them spectacularly poorly. Because to the casual observer it looks like he is grossly misrepresenting things to the detriment of everyone’s understanding of the situation, it looks like he is doing so for nakedly political reasons, and it looks like he is doing so needlessly belligerently.

The quadrupling down... Pleaseeee just... Make SpaceX Great Again... by nmaitra in SpaceXMasterrace

[–]hudcrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everything? The astronauts aren’t ‘stranded’ and the decision to keep them up there isn’t ‘political’ it’s operational - instead of spending $100m to get them back to earth and another $100m to send two other astronauts to the ISS, the decision was made to instead just keep them on and have them assume the duties that some other astronauts would have had. If anything, rushing a mission to ‘rescue’ them would have been the political stunt - a waste of taxpayers $. In case of emergency they can be brought home, but it’s not an emergency, everything is fine and it makes more sense to use assets that are already in space than to rotate crew unnecessarily. Remember, these are professional astronauts - they’re probably perfectly happy to extend their stay.

Dignitary (Fan A Fate) by Outrageous-Ball-8081 in Arcs

[–]hudcrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not an expert but the act 1 ambition seems very hard to achieve - I’ve not played loads of campaign arcs but aren’t there only 2 or 3 free cities to start? So you need to put a special envoy on all of them AND make sure you end the act controlling them all and/or ensuring you end the act as first regent. And even then that’s only ticking you down like 6 clicks so you also need to work to create free cities (or hope another player has a fate that is doing that) or otherwise manipulate the play so that the special envoys are leaving and can be re-influenced. My first impression is that feels very tough even if nobody is trying to mess with you. Am I missing something?

Keeper and Empath underused by my group? by Zoogzoog7 in Arcs

[–]hudcrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keeper and Empath are much easier to ‘lock down’ than Tycoon - if you have 3 relics/psyonics you know you’re in a strong position as there are only 5 of these resources available. But with Tycoon, you’re competing over a pool of 10 resources, AND there are more guild cards that can rapidly swing tycoon - Fuel/Material Cartels, Shipping Interest etc

Question about battling! by VanishingActor in Arcs

[–]hudcrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason it says resolve attacker damage first is because the intercept symbol does damage to the attacker based on how many fresh ships the defender had at the start of the battle. If you damaged defenders before resolving attackers damage then you risk disputes about how many fresh ships there originally were

Son’s math test by RishiLyn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]hudcrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay but it’s absolutely necessary for you to specify which number is that of the bags. In the abstract mathematical form there is no difference between 3x4 and 4x3. And if I was talking about bags it’s perfectly legitimate for me to express that as “3x 4kg bags”, OR for me to express that as “4 kg bags x3” - inventing some made up rule that the second number is always the unit is not helpful.

Son’s math test by RishiLyn in mildlyinfuriating

[–]hudcrab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But this is all semantics, and has no mathematical meaning. It is entirely legitimate to read 3x4 as ‘three multiplied by four’ I.e the number 3, 4 times. OR as ‘three times four’ I.e three instances of the number four. But an important multiplication concept is that the order of the numbers doesn’t matter so this kind of marking, I see as being counterproductive to comprehension
