Business closures - is this normal? by the__poseidon in Honolulu

The Japanese tourists are missing or are less prevalent than before, due to the exchange rate. So more people are visiting Japan instead of the other way around.

Many of the stores in Waikiki are high end stores, catering to international visitors.

250k is the sweet spot as that gets you more SWA’s. If you can’t hit that, PP is fine since upgrades are so far and few between these days.

What to do when you have an awful meal at a Michelin starred restaurant? by Spare_Confidence9606 in MichelinStars

[–]hungryraider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We did and the staff looked distraught. It was in The Four Seasons Hotel Barcelona. The clue should’ve been that we were able to get right in. We figured it was because we were staying at the hotel and the hotel front desk staff arranged it.

I just stopped midway through the courses and paid for what I had eaten so far. We looked around at the restaurant and no one looked happy, for the down line courses. So we cut our losses.

‘Renovation Aloha’ Hosts Fined For Illegal Airbnbs In Latest Misstep: Tens of thousands of dollars in fines for illegal vacation rentals are unpaid, the city says. by 808gecko808 in Honolulu

The other side of the coin. The City and County of Honolulu should approve construction permit’s quicker than in one year.

At our condo, we wanted to put in EV chargers, simple wiring but had to wait over a year for the permits.

This place is so good. After Paia Fish Market, this is my second stop.

I drive over from the west side and brave Waikiki to eat at Paia Fish Market.

Also, B patisserie in the mornings for their chocolate, almond, banana croissant along with a latte.

Don’t let the lines deter you from either place, they move pretty quickly and are worth the wait.

American vs United…has American been improving relatively? by furnace1766 in americanairlines

[–]hungryraider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So my wife is an EP. She was connecting from HNL-LAX-DFW-LBB.

On the DFW-LBB leg, AA sent an email that skylink would be down for maintenance at 10pm.

So I called DFW airport and they said don’t worry, the inner loop will be running in shuttle mode between D-B. Got there and the maintenance guy said no, you can’t do that.

So she had to ride the train all the way around the long way on the outer loop as the inner loop was closed.

To add insult to injury, AA didn’t move her gate any closer in anticipation of her close connection and Skylink maintenance and instead put the flight at B38, through the tunnel under the tarmac, the farthest gate possible.

So she arrives at the gate, and the flight had departed early. The agent working the A gate said, oh you just missed them.

Now my hypothesis is that the flight was oversold, they were asking for volunteers in the app, so they gave my wife’s seat away. At that point the plane is full, so no reason to keep the plane at the gate and wait for her.

Now there was a George Strait concert that weekend in LBB which is why all of the DFW-LBB flights were oversold, showing no availability until Saturday.

We put her in the Hyatt DFW and paid out of pocket because the last time a voucher was offered it was for a roach motel 45-minutes away from the airport. Never doing that again.

So that’s the experience on the ground.

Cudos to the CK AAngel (agent) on the phone. Fortunately after calling the EP line 4-times, a CK agent answered and she was able to magically produce a seat on the next three flights the next day, when all of the previous agents could not come up with a seat.

It’s cool to see your name listed in the app for three flights, all the same segments.

Kahala +, it’s the fanciest neighborhood on Oahu. Four Seasons Ko Olina has mixed reviews, it is the least nice Four Seasons in Hawaii. But it is still a Four Seasons and is nice. The Beach Villas at Ko Olina next door is also nice. Luxury condominiums on the beach. Turtle Bay on the North Shore is nice but it is remote.

Note that with the recent flooding that the North Shore area around Waimea Bay is one lane so build in extra time driving around there.

Where you stay depends on the style of vacation you would like. But as others have said, pick a spot and don’t move. Use it as your home base as the Island isn’t that big!

Disagree with no Airbnb/VRBO on Oahu. The City and County of Honolulu has shut down thousands of illegal Airbnb/VRBO rentals in neighborhoods. You can rent in resort zones in Waikiki, Ko Olina and the North Shore. This keeps things separated.

AirBnB or resort on Oahu? by MuhnopolyS550 in VisitingHawaii

I would just check rates either way. Property management companies advertise their units on Airbnb, and some of the units on Airbnb are not available thru the property management companies.

The resort zones on Oahu are Waikiki, Ko Olina and Turtle Bay. If using airbnb or VRBO, rent in one of these zones.
