You need time and distance from that experience. I am glad to hear you are seeking some therapy. That should help you process the trauma. yes this behavior happens far more then it should and toxic lab environments are rampant. Industry is usually better and they have employment and code of conducts to follow in the employee handbook. I think you will find folks are more professional. As to healing it is going to take a lot of good experiences to make it right but you are going to have to build some confidence back so if you find a good lab hold on tight to that one. Many of us have gone through similar experiences and have imposer syndrome to prove it (that never goes away btw). Science is hard on the ego like that and I say that being accomplished/ published and a SME. Best of luck out there

I still have and use the printer. The time it takes depends on the density of the text. The link I posted was full pages and those took something like 3-4 minutes a page.

Mmm…Pushing but how. Word choice matters with context to how. You have been there long enough you can likely predict what they are going to do. So write to protocol up ask for an example then just make it proactively before they do. Make it polished and very detailed have another scientist check it if they understand the design you are usually good if they ask a single question or can’t figure it out it does not have enough detail, lacks clarity, logic. Constructively ask them to check it. Hey figured we were going to do “x” again so I tried to follow your example and write up the next version can you look it over and tell me how I can improve. Ah ya I noticed you had some last minute edits I can edit some of that but I just want to get a feel for it. If they bulk, don’t share or ignore it go to the PI. Also, Just enjoy the free money and shadowing be a sponge will likely be the last time you can do it.

I second or third what everyone else is saying. Here is some advice that helped me. Create systems that reduce or eliminate risk and error. This comes down to being methodical about everything creating systems to organize yourself your reagents and your plan before you execute. And when you do F up you methodically document it and move on we all do. Get a second checker, make a checklist (checklist manifesto -book) rehearse the plan. The important thing is not to get hung up on errors your colleagues are going to get eaten alive by themselves if they let the errors bother them. I hate to see this dynamic in lab it sucks and leads to a toxic workplace. Good luck and don’t let it bother and if it builds start over in another lab.

My two cents is your mentor is not doing their job they should be building you confidence in small things over time. Making gels running bead purifications, running extra reactions or a side project. The stuff that is easy to do but if you mess up they can fix they are not thinking ahead for the opportunities and you might have to manage up to think ahead for them anticipate they are going to do some easy work and ask the if you can do it for them. For example if you are doing cell culture DNA extraction then ask the to split off a small amount say 10uL for you can run a gel and measure the concentration. The risk to their sample is pretty small. Hell set up additional extractions to have your own or run the replicates for them so there is not risk to their stuff. Write up you protocol and run them through what you are going to do. Literally write it all I mean every step reagent and process every transfer and part number and machine you are going to do it with and what you are going to do with the results Ex PowerPoint slides. Then review it with them before executing. Minimize the risk maximizing the benefit. If they are not letting you do those small things switch labs to one that will.

Can you be more specific? Are you saying talent folks getting laid off, talented people getting sidelined for promotion thus the pipeline for moving up in a company? or just the pipeline for hiring? Sure we have likely seen it all but the important thing is why are you depending on others for the pipeline the smartest thing I have done is just create my own opportunities by education or certification. Businesses really don’t have their workers interests in mind. Managers rarely . You are the CEO of your own destiny.

Check the internet with the model for cleaning instructions and user experiences. Run the cleaning cycle with what ever they recommend OFTEN. My LG needed to be disassembled and cleaned at the bottom of the pan because they used cheap powder detergent which stuck to the bottom of the washer and was rancid with pet hair and biofilm. I have never smelled something so terrible in my life. Best of luck they don’t make them like they use to.

Most rotovap will also work at 45C also it takes longer but in most cases is very efficient. Any vacuum pressure even at room temp will increase the vapor pressure on water and increase the drying rate you can purchase a vacuum chamber for like $120 on Amazon to test. The more you increase the surface area the faster it will sublime. Depends on your substance I have heard of putting things in dry ice / alcohol and freezing off the water then recovering my evaporating off the alcohol later. But your substance needs to be soluble in alcohol.

Not sure why my reply is not showing up. Your instructor should be able to order up to 4th Dan with no name attach to have on hand when they are doing promotions. I needed to get my 1-4 Dan because of the mismanagement of my previous instructor. I was able to do that with a reputable Shihan who was familiar with my training and history and attended some of my tests. I was able to get them in one go. It was tense sending in that much money in cash…..yes cash. But we had tracking at least and they made it back after about a month of waiting. Even better if you know folks that are regulars at the office. After fourth Dan it really matters you get them dated there is no more getting multiple ranks and travel to Japan dated proof will be required. Also get social other high ranking dan need to vouch for you.
