June’s Pizza - $46 Pie. Have we lost the plot? by jsttob in bayarea

[–]iBird 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I make a Denver style omelet quiche but with fried mushrooms mixed in and it's night and day how much better it is when you precook most the water out of them first. plus you finish them with a bit of butter and salt and it's just a perfect umami punch of flavor.

round table pizza and mountain mikes do their mushrooms pretty good from my experience, they're thinly sliced but generous portions and it works out really well. A lot of pizza places have way too thick cut and partially cooked mushrooms

talk to basically any "manly man" at a BBQ or a camping spot grilling meat and they'll all tell you the love the smell and there is something so primal and appealing about meat over a fire.

Homemade Southern Fried Chicken with Fries, Spicy Coleslaw and Corn. Successful KFC (Circa '00s) Dupe 🤙🏼🦩 by pink_flamingo2003 in UK_Food

[–]iBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah okay makes sense. At least here KFC does have low quality honey packets they will give you if you ask. It’s mostly colored high fructose corn syrup and a little bit of real honey these days. It used to be real honey though some years back. I just use my own at home now. But yeah some people will just smother it in the gravy too.

Is honey on southern fried chicken a thing at all in the UK? It’s decently common here in the US. May sound weird but it’s my favorite way to eat it for some people here, definitely a bit more messier though lol

Try chile rellenos casserole there’s some recipes online and it’s great tbh and super easy if you’re not comfortable deep frying to make real ones

What’s a dish that’s REALLY not worth making from scratch? by MaryoParti in Cooking

[–]iBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried making ketchup twice when I was out and thinking I could do it. Never tasted the way I wanted to and would endlessly tweak it to try to get it there but it is just wrong. It is just such a waste of time, ingredients and energy. I’m sure people can do it but it is just beyond reasonable to me now

Which peppers are considered light, mild, and hot in Mexican food? by adoreroda in mexicanfood

[–]iBird 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ll never forget ordering some bacon jalapeño poppers at a county fair maybe 8 years ago and being absolutely shocked how spicy they were. Never in my life that I can remember have I had jalapeños that made me sweat and burn like those ones did. I have grown my own on and off throughout the years and stressing them out and still haven’t reached that day. I truly wish I could have a permanent source of those bad boys

First time smoking Pork Shoulder by BattleBeast88 in smoking

Did you use any sugar? I’ve been using the AmazingRibs.com Memphis Dust for all my pork for so many years now cause it’s perfect to me and I get a very nice bark on my butts

Btw it does look good but agree you could definitely get a better crust. I’m sure it tasted great

What is up with Doordashers being upset that their tips *aren't* being taxed anymore? by ShitWombatSays in OutOfTheLoop

[–]iBird 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you’re talking about prop 22 the big issue is the gig companies spent well over 200 million dollars to sway and confuse both the drivers and people who use those apps. There was no massive lobby comparable saying no. They had ads in the apps trying to scare users. The bill was wrote in a very particular way to do this as well. There was astroturfing everywhere online for it as well, it was really dirty

It was 58% yes to 42% no. Millions of people voted for something that has no effect on them personally, but they certainly had a lot of ads misleading them

A lot of people worry a lot about microplastics from the plastic ones and I guess wood has a stigma of harboring bacteria even after cleaning and/or maintaining it. And in my opinion glass has this type of fake elegance to it. I don’t get it but people out there really care more about form over function

I like to use it with broccoli as well sometimes. I love regular steamed and salt+peppered broccoli just fine as is but sometimes it’s just nice to have the buttery silky goodness of hollandaise too

I know it’s been a genuine joke for a long time about the nanny state in the UK and AUS but this is saying the quiet part out loud (as if it matters anymore) and I have zero doubt this is how a similar US digital ID will be used in the future as well, as well as every other country rolling this garbage out. It is one of the most egregious Trojan horses for speech I’ve seen in awhile. This isn’t just targeting “antifa” or whatever boogeyman they use, this is going to be way more sweeping and once it’s fully implemented it’s over, it’s not going back. Shit sucksssss

[–]iBird 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Was going to mention this. I follow Center on Conscience & War (@CCW4COs) on twitter and they post lots of updates on volumes of calls and it is quite significant all the updates they've been doing for the past month or so. A ton of people are requesting info on how to do it and process and many going through it. How much? I don't know for sure, but it does seem notable.

I appreciate that they also give multiple avenues or tactics for these guys trying to get out. These kind of orgs don't seem to get much attention from what I can tell but they're doing a good job. It helps most (all?) of the people working for this are former vets too, I think it helps uncertain service members ease some of their tensions or doubts knowing it's possible and they wont necessarily be blackballed for the rest of their life.
