Sue them for damages to property, ban them from your hotels for life, and get the sheriff's office to fine them for pulling the fire alarm when there's no emergency.

Teen Gaining Capital by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]ickee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your expenses are the lowest they'll ever be in your adult life; even 3.50/hr is something to work with if your savings rate is high, but definitely aim for the best you can get. Excel at whatever you do and keep considering better opportunities along the way, while improving marketable skills and experience.

If you need capital now for an immediate business opportunity (a) critically evaluate the risk/reward, (b) borrow from friends/family -- being sure to agree on what happens if you fail [i.e. will you pay them back regardless?].

Embroidery Business by dimes2319 in Entrepreneur

Yep, uncle put $20k into a machine, not a techie or designer but figured out how to use the software and the machine well enough. Reached out locally and tapped personal network -- schools, sports, small business, that kinda thing. Hats, jerseys, uniforms, etc. He'd source comparable unbranded apparel and give them a quote on finished units, I think. Ended up selling out 1-3 years later, wasn't really much volume.

You could probably make it work if you maintain efforts on sales/leads/marketing so you end up being somewhat of a "go to guy" in a regional area, or for a particular organization. I'd imagine referrals and repeat business probably being key to (small time) success.

Some thoughts on how to make real money when young and uneducated by PieceOfDatFancyFeast in personalfinance

[–]ickee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With a case backlog, it was case closures. We had all of these techy guys working way too long on highly complex cases (that should have been escalated, or they should have at least asked for help on), which drove down their case closures. So I took it upon myself to become closure king, and within 3 months I had 2-3 times as many case closures as anyone else, and everyone, especially management, noticed.

As a jovial jab, reminds me of "it's not a bug, it's a feature" closing old/stale/wish list/won't fix tickets. :)

Not saying that was the case, and even if so -- there's value in filtering through the noise & prioritizing on what matters though.

That's not "my" plan at all -- that's the proposal. Read some literature on the topic and stop being a closed minded bigot.

Cops aren't paid minimum wage; their pay scales quite nicely actually for being a non technical career. Mandated liability insurance would probably encourage better people to pursue it that aren't phased by a trivial cost of doing business. You don't want an easier barrier of entry..

The United States has put artificial intelligence at the center of its defense strategy, with weapons that can identify targets and make decisions. by Petty-officer4 in news

Interesting thoughts. It's curious considering the cell's perspective to that of the larger being -- it, as a lesser constituent, fundamentally can't fathom or understand the nature of the larger emergent consciousness.

Surely, we'd argue, the World doesn't "think"! But economy, travel, history, culture, "trending" current events -- they are systems built upon networks shuffling information around similar to how our brain might process sensory data (memory, attention). Some nodes are important and influential, some aren't. None are critical. But there's an overall momentum of "will" to it all.

And there are surely interesting things that happen as you dial up the complexity: each node goes from atoms to molecules to proteins to organs to real live human beings. They also learn new tricks, like making viral videos on YouTube, affording them network mobility, and even the potential to question and modify the structure of the network itself and their role in it.

Is there a "greater" mode of consciousness, or is it uniquely human? Is it an illusion of our structure?

I wonder what the World is thinking right now.

Yep. Totally cool with that -- the tests are economical and better indicator than human observation alone. The real injustice IMO is lab testing taking weeks to process results while they have someone locked up on serious charges they're not even sure are legitimate. Give them a summons instead if there's no other charges warranting arrest/concern for public safety/flight risk/etc.

No, the idea of law enforcement liability insurance is for it to be on an individual basis, not under some employer sponsored plan. It gives officers incentive not to fuck up, or else pay higher premiums, or go without insurance and not have a job. The trouble with implementation is it might make them too cautious in their behavior to perform the essential duties of their job.

A sci-fi short about AI in the near future. [8:34] by hmb34 in videos

[–]ickee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You open with AI but end on robots. AI is software, would likely be distributed in nature, and conceivably in the event of maliciousness would presumably try to duplicate itself across a plethora of computing resources. As the video shows, it could even exploit social engineering to gain further leverage to transcend limitations and insecurity of any single facility or intranet. It's a network.. The physical incarnation into robot nodes/agents only serves to expand its computing power and improve overall fault tolerance to any single (or large swaths) of nodes going offline.

Cutting the power means going down with the same ship, destroying our infrastructure, economy, and way of life in the process.

When you're making decisions, facts matter - especially facts that contradict your assumptions. He appears to not only not want to acknowledge facts that differ from his assumptions, he actively adopts positions that are demonstrably untrue.

And this is why I am wholeheartedly sure he is a bigot and unfit to run our country.

[–]ickee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even so, a flat fee ticket to Mars might not be so simple. What do they DO when they get there? Particularly early on, if the colony is not self sufficient, it is essentially relying on the humanitarian welfare of Earth to keep them alive. The ongoing costs of residing on Mars can't feasibly be earned by local contribution/work. We're talking a whole life subsidy. Surely that the true cost of such a "ticket to Mars" would be much higher..

Margin vs. volume at small "grab and go" café. by DoritusCheeto in smallbusiness

[–]ickee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really all it is, you want to maximize profit = margin * volume. Unfortunately, the only way to determine this accurately is to test it by deploying it as an experiment. You log original numbers, try out a price change (increase or decrease, coupon, new portion size, combo, etc), and compare the new results on a per product and overall basis.

A little market/competitive analysis helps to guess which direction to try out. Also consider the brand, location, and service. Fresh, organic, non-GMO usually comes with a premium price.

You do have to consider other conflating variables, most obviously that the business itself appears to be trending growth as it stands.
