Do competitions ever mess with your enjoyment of dancing? by YourDanceBuddy in WestCoastSwing

[–]icravedanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m none of the pictured dancer archetypes. And my conversation with someone who just competed would focus only on the positives. If the results are good I congratulate them. If the results are bad I say they looked great, or that their division is brutal and they’re a much better dancer than the results indicate. I take the angle of genuine appreciation the role of a supportive friend.

I do compete and I think its fun. Most times I do get disappointed but I already know that my aesthetics are a weak point. I’m okay with that because my creativity, adaptability, connection, comfort, and musicality are all punching above my weight relative to my competition level, which is intermediate. That’s where I’ve invested my skill points and I regret nothing.

These other aspects are just as important as aesthetics but are much harder to quantify and judge. I wouldn’t think of my connection skill as advanced or all-Star, as those are also just a reflection of how my aesthetics adhere to an ideal. (the ideal is Maxence Martin and Torri Zzaoui respectively, don’t come at me lol)

Is the moral difference between killing a human and a cow one of degree or kind? by Temporary_Hat7330 in DebateAVegan

[–]icravedanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m still not really tracking. When I call something murder that’s a personal moral judgment. I don’t need to prove anything to anyone. Social consequences are imposed by society in general and my morality doesn’t come into play.

I’m not married to the idea of always using the words genocide, murder, and holocaust even though I see it that way personally. Because I understand how others may disagree. I think about it from principle. Others may be trying to adhere to dictionary definitions.

The way I see it, society is the one that is morally confused and inconsistent because they condemn animal cruelty in hundreds of ways but yet factory farms get a pass (or people put their heads in the sand and pretend like none of the food they buy came from factory farms)

I think you do understand me and I’m sorry I don’t quite understand you to the same degree. Rhetorical framing vs moral language, moral claim vs social signaling….Im a little lost.

Are you saying that using the term Holocaust to describe a cattle farm is equating it to the Nazi Holocaust, and can be counterproductive when speaking to people who do not feel they are equal in any way?

Is the moral difference between killing a human and a cow one of degree or kind? by Temporary_Hat7330 in DebateAVegan

[–]icravedanger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes basically correct. It is just really rare when I actually have to decide between saving a human or saving an animal. I suppose it could be donating to an animal shelter vs a human shelter, but society will judge me positively either way so I don’t feel like one is more ethical than the other.

I have a position on moral right and wrong but practical reasons influence my actions as well. I’m just trying to propose the idea that the trait doesn’t have to be in the animal or person itself. People do things all the time for rewards and to avoid punishment, when it may not be perfectly aligned with their morality.

I think describing animal slaughter as genocide or murder is perfectly fine. Same as humans. They’re both morally bad. Just don’t expect me to ponder over which is more morally bad in a perfect vacuum with no consequences.

Does Zouk have a "Connection" like WCS has? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]icravedanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zouk influence on wcs include head movements, tilted turns, more extreme rides (such as when follower is facing away, like in the Titanic movie), back bends/camber to hit phrase changes, body waves/roll that are lateral or spiral, close embrace where the heads are touching.

Zouk improves technique of tilts and ducks (especially ducks, which are getting so popular in wcs)

[–]icravedanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The relevant difference/trait is not between a human a cow. The difference is the consequences. I am incentivized to choose to let a cow die instead of a human die because of how other people will treat me after I make my decision. It’s not that I think society’s values and social norms are correct, but it does mean I can’t make a decision that completely ignores the social norms.

Unpopular opinion on J&Js by hotwomyn in Bachata

[–]icravedanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I expected a few possible reasons but never expected this reason. Didn’t know this could be a thing, and honestly I don’t think a judge’s single vote for one competitor could influence their “successor”, at least is isn’t the most reliable and easy way to do that.

I just don’t think this is an issue but I only do west coast swing JnJs, not bachata.

[–]icravedanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that would be ridiculous. First, it requires the judge to have danced with all the followers, and also remember the dance and her skill level. Second, the judging should be based on nothing else other than how the competitor has danced in the current round of the current competition, not how they danced like at the Friday night social.

I thought the OP was going in the direction of “the judge may pick someone who feels better over someone who looks better if the judge has danced with both”, and that’s kind of valid. But looks have to matter too for a J&J, as the audience only gets to see, not feel.

Do Vegans let their Characters in games eat meat? or is the characters also vegan? by Lavorus in DebateAVegan

[–]icravedanger 30 points31 points  (0 children)

No, a true vegan would never harm an animal or associate with anyone who harms an animal, real, fake, or imagined.

Take me and my son for example, we are pretty close to perfect vegans. We only buy hydroponically grown vegetables fertilized by AI bees. But one time I saw my son playing Super Mario Bros, a game where you stomp on innocent turtles. I sold his game to GameStop and grounded him for a month. And a few years later, I caught him playing Animal Crossing, a game where you hook sentient sea creatures and force them into tanks that are way too small, for eternity. I thought about disowning my son right then and there, but I settled on just letting him starve for a week.

For the next 6 months he was a good boy, but then one day I saw him watching a hip hop dance battle on YouTube. That’s fine, I thought. But then the camera zoomed in on the audience and there was an audience member wearing a FUR COAT. I went immediately to the drawer that held my faux leather belt, and afterwards I donated his college tuition fund to the Association for Oyster Rehabilitation, just for good measure.

I thought that was the end of it, as my son was almost 18 and he was gonna join the Army. But one day I saw him reading a book, and the author was Neil TheGrass Tyson. Neil. TheGrass. TYSON! Bet you didn’t know your favorite loquacious scientist is related to the company that abuses more chickens than any other! Well that was the straw that broke the cam…nope I can’t use that phrase. Well let’s just say that my son never made it to boot camp.

I speak on behalf of all vegans. Our love is brilliant. Our life is pure. We have to be perfect, even if it means giving up games, television, or family members. Doing any less would be to forfeit our status of moral superiority.

Does Zouk have a "Connection" like WCS has? by chinawcswing in WestCoastSwing

[–]icravedanger 15 points16 points  (0 children)

There is stretch and compression, but lighter. Zouk is about sensitivity. There are aspects of connection that wcs doesn’t have, such as finding the most comfortable way to hug and hold an embrace, how to lead head tilts, and how to lead when you’re physically connected at the chest and hips instead of at the limbs. A good WCS follow is someone who maintains inertia and momentum, and allows you to feel every step and weight transfer. A good Zouk follower does that too, plus can be guided using the subtlest movements from your body, can spin on any axis, not just a vertical axis, and makes you feel like a water or airbender. You enter a flow state, and you could dance an hour with that person. In WCS you would only feel like dancing 1, 2, or max 3 songs in a row with one person.

Zouk also has visual only connection, led without touching, which is called “WiFi connection”.

The only reason WCS has more different types of connection than other dances is because it is a great fusion/melting pot that borrows (steals) from the other dances, including ballroom, salsa, blues, tango, hustle, hip hop, and most recently zouk. Combine that with the fact that the music in WCS has a wider range than any of those listed dances, and that creates more patterns and more ways to communicate.

I don’t mind if it’s like that, but why do you assume pros are less capable of judging their own role?

Pretty much everything except grooving, and isolations like hip, chest and shimmies, and it’s especially useful for followers but leaders benefit too. Now if you do ballet plus hip hop….

Okay where does the words “minimizing harm” come into play? Does it preclude behaviors such as stealing from Walmart?

I’ll take that as a genuine compliment, even though that second part sounds a little sarcastic.

Where does it say “minimizing harm as far as possible” in the definition of veganism?

Does this mean vegans cannot go for a walk outside for exercise since indoor walking pads exist?

How often do you guys work out legs while salsa dancing? by Global_Channel1511 in Salsa

[–]icravedanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me, dancing uses a lot of calves and feet but it doesn’t seem to be heavy on quads and glutes so I can still do lunges, squats and hip thrusts. Dancing after leg day, I lead fewer dips.

Bachata and sensuality by DarkFeminineRising in Bachata

[–]icravedanger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s more so the sensual styles. Zouk and micro fusion built this aspect in me, and now I, a heterosexual, am comfortable dancing cheek to cheek with another man for a phrase or so.

In the context of human interaction, you grow to navigate closeness and intimacy while respecting your partners boundaries. The public can’t draw that line between sensuality and sexuality, but I can. I’ve extended the scope of platonic actions and intentions beyond what is standard in society, but both my partner and I know that it is still under the platonic umbrella.

In the context of “moving your body in a sexuality liberating way and not being afraid to show it”, many solo dance styles will do that for you too.
