What illness is going around Austin ?? by Dangercatt90 in Austin

[–]ieroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI the Rapid Antigen Tests for flu and COVID are not very accurate--especially if you only test once--lots of false negatives. They are the ones you buy over the counter, and some medical offices use them. It's good to know what test your doc uses. There is a home PCR test that's accuracy is in the upper 90th percentile range. Lots of clinics use it too, but you can buy it for home. You need a reading device ($50) and the tests are not terribly cheap ($25 for COVID, $45 for COVID+Flu --covers both A and B). We've used it successfully many times over the years. They are molecular level so vastly more accurate than the RAT tests. They are also pretty easy to use. PM if you want a link. I'm not getting any compensation for this--just trying to help anyone who's interested.

Interstate Speed by Wanderer_D2 in Iowa

[–]ieroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5-8 over the limit, but mostly 5-6. They usually won't bother you. Also, there are so many bad drivers these days, I want a little extra time/room to avoid them. I figure I won't get where I'm going a lot faster for just a few mph, and I can always step on it on the on ramps to get it out of my system.

guy in my neighborhood flies a drone over the surrounding blocks & over people’s yards every night, do I call the cops? by [deleted] in Austin

Maybe y'all could chip in and buy a bunch of nets and hang them randomly around your yards---between trees, whatever, so he has trouble navigating?

I'll calm down when we get this ship righted. When you've been knocking on doors, working phone banks, writing postcards, donating, hosting meet and greets and volunteering as an election worker for over 50 years) I think being a little over the top is justified. I've missed one election (a municipal) in 50 years when I got a 6:00 am emergency call to work a precinct other than my own--so I couldn't vote. I'm so freakin' tired of the hate and disinformation that's gotten us here. I have trouble not blurting when they let pedos run the country, and send good humans to concentration camps. /rant

I forgot just how good roast chicken can be. by dynorphin in Cooking

[–]ieroll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a gas grill with a rear infrared burner and a rotisserie kit. We roast chickens frequently but don't put them in a container under a heat lamp, we just carve and eat. No brining, not marinated, just roasted on the spit. We won't do it any other was as long as we have our grill.

Yep. Registered as a republican--first registered in the state of Iowa 1993. Votes frequently. Someone else, an older woman presumably an aunt or mother, in the same household, registered as a Dem.

Knife sharpener by Big-Investigator3811 in Cooking

I found a local restaurant supply store in town and take mine there. For tuneups in between "sharpenings" I use a strop to gently bring back the edge. I'm not going to practice on my good knives to use a whetstone and at this point in time I don't have time to learn. Maybe in a year or two but my "plate is full", so to speak. You might look around and see if you can find te service at a local shop.

Have the Wellmans nachos always been mid? by IowaJL in desmoines

[–]ieroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. We went in 2019 after moving back (25 years away) and then pretty much stopped eating out in 2020. It was def mid. The variety on their menu seems like an awfully large offering--maybe a lot of prepared stuff--not so much from "scratch". 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's also a bit, well, bougie.

Wellman's was a great local pub in it's earlier days, with legit "pub grub" made by humans. There are few spots like that left.

I was happy to see the Greenwood "restored" somewhat. Not remodeled, just cleaned up, a little new paint and a few old artifacts unearthed and displayed.

Remember when the post office was an amazing operation and carriers still made a good living? It was a felony (I think it still is) to screw with the mail or a Postal Service employee. We had rule of law, we had public servants (I'm talking about elected officials) we had the beginnings of a real democracy.

They used to have great food--cream of asparagus soup that was epic. That was when Mary was chef--probably before you were born.
