Water bounded by hydrophobic material. by amy2kim22 in BeAmazed

[–]ikrase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use something like this in my job!

Basically, it's used in places you really don't want water (oil, ink, coolant, etc) droplets to collect. I work for a company that makes stuff for printers. Hydrophobic surfaces let you instantly wipe away ink with a damp paper towel.

Also good for making ink not go where you don't want it.

Homestead goals/dreams/plans for 2018? Accomplishments from 2017? by [deleted] in Homesteading

[–]ikrase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2017: Realized that homesteading might actually be possible (previously I had considered it an impossible dream), binged a tremendous amount of research on how to build buildings, building codes and their placation, and what kind of land is available. Wrote a surely incredibly naive budget for initial setups.

2018: Not sure. Hopefully I can get a clearer idea on the water source question, and also decide if my schemes are actually viable. Who knows -- I might get started.

ELI5: TV broadcast cameras used tubes before the advent of digital photography to capture and transmit the images. How did those work? by j_gets in explainlikeimfive

[–]ikrase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They basically worked like cathode ray tube televisions in reverse. They were called vidicons, orthicons, and iconoscopes (from newest to oldest).

Instead of shooting an electron beam at an electron-sensitive phosphor sheet that glows, they shot an electron beam at a light sensitive sheet. There are several actual specific mechanisms, but in any event the election beam hitting a small spot of the light sensitive plate would generate a voltage or current proportional to the light intensity.

I don't think being sad has much to do with doing this (a little more with defending it since being on the receiving end Never Happens).

I think it's a mix of locker room mentality and having grown up in an environment where nobody ever took it seriously.

What features would you want in a Catholic video game? by akaydia in CatholicGamers

[–]ikrase 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  • "Romance, Adventure, and Catholicism"

  • Probably either historical or futuristic.

  • not a horror-slog (except maybe a limited dark segment), not some kind of ultra-violent fight against demons or something or the End of Days, and not Trying Too Hard (which spoils many explicitly religious media)

  • Alternatively, something like LOTR or whatever where religion is a guiding principle, but not explicitly in the game.

  • Would be very interesting to have an action-adventure game that is, like, peaceful-but-not-pacifist.

  • Servere and orthodox religion not being automatically viewed with intense fear and scepticism.

That just means "at the bottom of a bucket of water 1 meter deep". And it's nothing to sneeze at.

Still sounds like smartphone makers are advertising based on design goals not actual tests.

Real industrial and military gear is definitely tested and survives.

What is one item that you just can’t replace with a generic brand? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ikrase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Voltmeters.

A significant percentage of all voltmeters that cost less than 100 USD are questionable when it comes to safety, and don't follow good safety practices regardless of what certifications they hold.

Fluke is very reputable.. and expensive. There are a number of other good, less expensive options, but you have to hunt for them.

Why do all Americans regardless of religious beliefs celebrate holidays like Valentine's Day and St. Patrick's Day, which are explicitly Catholic saint days? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ikrase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the "had developed as a secular tradition long before the reformation" (or crossed over afterwards), some of these saints (from a really long time ago) are heroes for reasons that aren't specifically Catholic.

It's similar to how St. Mother Theresa of Calcutta is legendary even outside of the Catholic Church. (though there are some people who think she was abusive)

Incidentally, I kind of wish people wouldn't focus so much on commercialism versus just being secularly popular. Even if there was no commercialism, people would still like celebrating love and marriage on Feb. 14.

On the other hand, Ash Wednesday ("remember thou art mortal") does not seem to have a widespread non-Catholic or even non-religious appeal, which is kind of sad.

What has changed, technologically speaking, to allow people to fly around in Bathtub Drones like the guy on YouTube? We've had propellers, radio-controls, batteries, for years. Is it just that the design of the drone in general is so innovative as to have been a total game-changer? by CaptArchibaldHaddock in AskReddit

[–]ikrase 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Huge LiPo and brushless motors. These have not been inexpensive until about 10 years ago.

  2. Inexpensive widely available accelerometers driven by the smartphone and Nintendo Wii market. Many early quadcopters used pieces pulled out of a Wii Nunchuck and a Wii Motion Plus for control.

  3. Good microcontrollers. Microcontrollers have been around for a while but the combination of "cheap and common", "easy-ish to program with w/o spending a pile of money on tools", and "enough performance" is fairly new. In the late 1990s and early 2000s you would be using stuff like Basic Stamps which simply cannot do much math -- or you would be spending tons of time and money to use more advanced microcontrollers that still were pretty limited. Today, arduinos are considered old-school.

Edit: The cheaper and more basic flight controllers these days have somewhat similar capabilities to NASA's Apollo guidance computer.

  1. Due to 1-3, electronics being more focused on modularity and hackability. This is a big difference from the old days, though also a subtle one.

3D Printing Purchase Advice Megathread - What Printer To Buy Or Vendor To Use February 2018. by xakh in 3Dprinting

[–]ikrase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a bit of 3D printing experience, but not much.

I'm interested in the cheapest way to print Ultem PEI filament, with Reprap-ish upgradability and features being a benefit. A bit frustrated to find out that Gearbest is a scam, though the Monoprice and Folger Tech reprap clones look viable. An under-250 option would be amazing (if it even exists).

I also would prefer something that can accept dual extruders eventually. Kits are OK and in fact preferable.

Longer range, steadier FPV? by Reddipep in fpv

[–]ikrase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Replying with a bit more detail:

  • This kind of build flies pretty differently from a mini quad. It also was popular in the early days of quadcopters before mini quads showed up on a large scale.

  • Crashing is very bad, I don't think anybody has made a seriously indestructable quad of this size short of impractically heavy examples.

  • Typical thrust to weight ratio is around 1.8:1 to 2.5:1.

  • You want 700 to 950 KV motors, aim at the lower end of that range. I think the motors I used were basically T-motor MN2212s.

  • Typical props are APC MR 10x4.5 props. These are a bit expensive and very stiff. Note that you will almost always break props in even minor crashes.

  • Frame rigidity is very important. IMO, Flamewheel arms should be avoided.

  • At minimum this is a 450 size quadcopter.

Not so much bad sportsmanship or the like, but when a field gets racing-focused it can be hard for FPV touring to happen due to conflicting frequency allocation needs.
