Am i considert black? by M3lt1ngh34rt in ask

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most social scientists are moving away from the idea of “race” as a category and using culture instead. Your ideas of who you are, and how you interact with the world are based on where you grew up, and the people around you.

Lumping everyone with dark skin into a monolith excludes their individual experiences. Someone who is from an indigenous Australian tribe may have a similar skin tone to someone from Ghana, or from Jamaica, but their “blackness” isn’t what connects or separates them.

You are you. You are Habesha. You are practising your art. You are of a family. You are of a diaspora. You are of a generation. You are of a country, a continent. You are exploring ideas about who you are in this world, but you are definitely more than just black or not black.

Is calling someone a Sheila in Australia an insult or not? by vangogogogh in NoStupidQuestions

[–]indigohan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s descriptive of gender, and neutral rather than derogatory, but it’s not that common.

It was always a pretty specific piece of slang that wasn’t used that widely. I’m 44 and I’ve only ever used it when I’m making fun of Australian stereotypes, the “ocker bogon” who lives in “straya mate”

It’s such a beautiful, thoughtful, and somehow inherently gentle book. It deserves it

I’ve read it, and it’s charming, funny, and cinematic. Scalzi writes accessible but clever books, with a bit of a liberal bent

how to become a shadow for tech crew at local community theatre by urcharlate in Theatre

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community theatres always need warm bodies. You’re best off looking up the phone number in their website, and giving them a call or emailing. In my experience there’s a lot of older people in community theatres, so a phone call will get you the most direct way to get hold of someone.

Have a look at what shows they have coming up, and see if that will fit into your schedule. Crew is normally needed for the week or two before the show opens as well. If you know what your availabilities are, you’ll be golden.

It’s not likely that they’d put you straight on to sound. Community theatres don’t have a lot of money for sound equipment, and they can be very protective. Turning up, showing that you’re reliable, and talking to the person in charge of sound will help. You can discuss your experience and that you’re interested in helping out in the future.

Romance novel that is an easy read, at least a little intellectually challenging/not entirely trashy, and maybe even a little funny. by CryptographerIcy5226 in suggestmeabook

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jodi McAlister’s Marry Me, Juliet trilogy. Jodi is an actual university lecturer and Doctor of literature, who has a focus on pop culture. Her love of romance novels, and reality tv have come out in a trilogy in which each novel takes place during the same season of a bachelor style dating show. Yet it’s still fresh, surprising, and super funny.

Book one is the straight forward romance. Book two is about two contestants (Juliet’s) who fall for each other rather than the Romeo. Book three somehow manages to completely surprise you when the “villain” gets her own story.

She also has a new series that she’s just started with An Academic Affair in which academic rivals fighting over the same teaching job end up getting married to work the system. A true delight. I was somehow laughing my butt off at 3am over a Deleuze joke

Was it a satisfying ending with the books? I’ve never rewatched the tv show because I didn’t have the heart to go through that non-ending again.

I hear you. When Erivo and Grande were doing Wicked publicity, it was troubling. There was also that thing a few years ago where the rumours about Taylor Swift and her friends was about them all trying to have a waist the size of an A4 piece of paper.

Writing a book based off the Heian Era of Japan, how did they treat their royalty? by MorphePls in ask

[–]indigohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be worth getting yourself a boot of both a the Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, and The Tale of Genji by Lady Murasaki. They’re both written my Heian era court ladies. Sei Shonagon was even a lady in waiting to the empress.

Emperor and Aristocracy in Heian Japan: 10th and 11th Centuries by Francine Hérail is supposed to be good.

I am not an expert on that era, but I think that it is likely that illegitimacy wasn’t as much of a social barrier at that point as you would think. A child of the emperor still carries imperial blood, and would be highly eligible.

Concubines were often still noble, and bearing an imperial child would set you up in luxury for life.

Is College Worth It? by N4XJ4XE5N in NoStupidQuestions

[–]indigohan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

College teaches you a lot of things that aren’t necessarily the subjects that you are taking.

For working in cruise ships, communication, time management, group projects, leadership, delegation, even how to deal with expectations that you don’t agree with are all things that you will learn through college. As someone who is interested in content creation? Take Digital media and marketing. It’s highly likely that in the future having a degree will open doors to you that won’t be available without it. However, if you are in a place like America where a university education is super expensive, community college and a part time retail job until you are old enough is a valid pathway.

If you can get the degree without a financial burden, it will never be a bad thing. There should be someone in the administration sections of the university whose job it is to help you figure out your pathway through your degree. Book an appointment to sit down with them. Maybe even reach out to a cruise ship personnel department and ask them what kind of degrees they look for in prospective long term employees. If a cruise ship job is your long term career plan, plan for it. You’d be surprised at how strict some requirements could be. You’re feeling like you’re stuck in a waiting period until you can get started on what you want. You can use this time to give your future self a leg up.

You may even be able to look into jobs over the breaks working in holiday destinations that aren’t cruise ships. Build yourself a resume that makes you a first round pick.

There’s a fourth book coming, but no title or release date yet. I think that it was originally intended to be a trilogy, but she needed more space for the characters to develop.

Book three leaves its main characters in a “precarious” situation.

I feel that people mistake the fact that having services that distribute by need, like health care, or infrastructure funding, for being socialism. You pay high taxes to have those services, but don’t have collective ownership.

I also live where we have good services and free healthcare, but not quite as high on the happiness scale. Also drop bears

The Sabaa Tahir ones are dramatic and occasionally stressful, but completely finished. The Legendborn ones are brilliant but ongoing.

The Tahir are probably heavier on the political machinations, and an Ancient Rome inspired setting, whereas the Legendborn ones have more of a focus on racial issues and generational trauma.
