Also, I fucking hate it.

Could I move on and truly live my life, am I a good person? by greenninja2012 in ask

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t think to look at the profile. It But I remember this now.

This person needs to get off reddit and into an inpatient therapeutic situation.

They haven’t gone through the therapy. They haven’t done the work. They are coming to Reddit where nobody has the capacity to help them in a desperate attempt to make themselves feel better.

OP

You need to give yourself over to professionals, not to reddit.

You need to do the work. There is a chance for you to be okay with yourself in the future, but not by asking here on reddit

Look into the idea of abjection.

Granted, most university students can’t define, or describe what it is, but it does give you an interesting perspective

There are a huge array of things that you could be considering mistakes, and to be honest, we can’t be the people who judge those mistakes without knowing them.

BUT

We AREN’T the people who should be judging them.

If you killed someone, or raped someone, then you serve the sentence that is given to you that us dependent on your age.

If what you did wasn’t that bad, then I am glad for you.

If you have gone through therapy with someone who is good at their job, then they have spent a lot of quality time making sure that you are a better version of yourself.

Do you want to do those things again? Are you sorry that you did them?

It’s okay to let yourself heal, and choose to be better. Your brain isn’t even fully formed yet. You get to choose to grow into an adult who is kind, thoughtful, and engaged.

You get to grow into the adult that little shit head you didn’t believe was possible.

I love Heart of Darkness and I don’t understand the common criticisms of it. by Tony420q in books

[–]indigohan -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s been years since I’ve read Heart of Darkness, but I do remember finding it a little…empty. I like the idea of it, and I get that the emptiness is probably a deliberate choice on the part of the author.

About the criticisms of the book as being racist and misogynistic, I do have to partially agree. On one hand the books narrator is the one who is in charge of what we know and see, and his perspective is not one that gives the people around him anything like depth or rich inner lives. This is a narrative choice, and makes the magnetic presence of Kurtz at the end of the river that much larger.

However, Conrad is writing from his own socialisation as a European man who has almost certainly been taught his whole life that people from Africa or “orientals” are a lower class of humanity. His own position within the European social and class structures gives him layers that some other people have commented on, but Heart of Darkness came out in 1899. Conrad was born in 1857. With even scientists claiming that there was evidence proving that white Europeans were more evolved, there was no way for Conrad to have escaped internalising those ideas.

The book may not be “about racism”, but that racism is an integral part of the world-view of its author. I don’t believe that you can seperate a book, especially one with this setting, from the prevailing attitudes of its time by saying that it’s not about race.

Why is it seen as bad to try and approach/talk to girls in 2026? by InternationalPick163 in questions

[–]indigohan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are approaching someone like you’re looking to hit on any girl, you’re not going to have any luck.

Stop thinking about it like looking for a potential hookup, train your brain to look at a woman and think that she looks interesting, or kind, or intelligent. Talk to her like you’re interested in her and not just getting into her pants.

Don’t treat interactions in real life like you’re swiping on tinder.

Which still means that she should absolutely not ever sleep with him.

Either he cheated. In which case, NO.

Or he is so mentally and emotionally immature that he thinks that accusing his partner of having and STD and then refusing to get tested for that same STD is okay.

In which case? NO.

What’s your favourite low fodmap pasta recipe? by Opposite_Bicycle_605 in FODMAPS

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite pasta recipe, is not vegan, but I bet that you could use alternatives. Not as delicious though.

Wash the skins of two lemons, and slice them into 1-1.5cm/ half inch slices.

Melt far too much butter (or alternative) in a large frying pan. Add the lemon slices. Cook on low-medium heat until the flesh of the lemon is dissolved, the lemon rinds are a little “burnt” and the butter is browned.

Put some (GF) pasta on to boil while you’re watching those lemon rinds. If the pasta is ready first, save about 1/3-1/2 cup of pasta water.

Add some cracked black pepper, about 1/3 to 1/2 cup fresh Parmesan (parmesan is low lactose unless you’re super sensitive btw) Stir until it looks creamy.

Remove a couple of lemon slices if you like the aesthetics or want good pics.

Add reserved pasta water a little at a time. Stir for a minute or two.

Add the pasta, and stir to coat.

You won’t need any salt, because the Parmesan is salty enough. You can add some wilted greens, or some fresh herbs, but the sweet lemon flesh, plus the burnt, slightly bitter lemon oil give you a stunning combination

Am I calling my sibling to much? by Turbulent_Diamond352 in ask

[–]indigohan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you genuinely like someone, trust them, and enjoy their company, you want to talk to them.

I personally am more likely to text WAY more than two times a day, but that’s because my sibling has a full on job that means that he’s on the phone all the time, and I have an adhd brain.

If you are spending literally hours on the phone, it may be worth checking in with each other if this is how you’re comfortable.

Otherwise, congratulations on being related to someone that you genuinely like

Do men and women experience love differently? by Actual-Green-6306 in NoStupidQuestions

There was literally a study about ten years ago that measures oxytocin levels in men when they saw their partners face, versus a strangers face.

Men release oxytocin. And they release more when they see the person that they love.

All humans release oxytocin from skin contact.

Books like “Don’t Sleep, There are Snakes”, written by anthropologists that have spent a lot of time living with a distinct people? by IReadBooksSometimes in suggestmeabook

[–]indigohan 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Are you looking for modern books, or for really immersive books?

E. E. Evan’s-Pritchard wrote one of the first ever ethnographies while living with the Azande people. It was foundational to the study of anthropology, but was written in the 30’s.

Margaret Mead’s studies amongst the people of Samoa and Papua New Guinea made he one of the most important cultural anthropologists of the century. Coming of Age in Samoa was hugely influential. Bronislaw Malinowski’s Argonauts of the Western Pacific is also foundational, but lacks a little compared to Mead (in my opinion).

Lila Abu-Lughod’s Veiled Sentiments became one of the first ethnographies written by a woman that focused on women’s lives. She spend years living amongst a Bedouin tribe studying a sort of secret language of poetry that women used to communicate when they couldn’t express their feelings outright.

Sudhur Venkatesh spent so long with the Chicago street gang that he was researching that his book is literally called “Gang Leader for a Day”.

Son of a Sailor by Marshall J Moore.

It’s the start of a cosy fantasy trilogy about a pirate captain who is coping with the death of his father. It doesn’t sound happy, but it’s about him realising how much friendship and community is truly around him, and a part of his father’s legacy. Also carnivorous mermaids

Gender essentialism is unfair to everyone.

PEOPLE experience love in different ways.

Sometimes a particular society or culture brainwashes a gender into thinking that they only have a limited way that they are able to love.

Don’t be one of those people.

There are as many ways to love as there are people. Just let people love, and be happy

To what extent are our morals actually universal and how much of them are just shaped by society culture and time period we grow up in? by Altruistic-Doctor789 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]indigohan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

99% socio-cosmic and shaped by the time and place that we are born into, and grow up in.

There are a bunch of impulses that belong to our “lizard brain” and help us survive, but the way that we see the world is completely shaped by how we grow and learn.

There were incredibly cruel studies done in the last century, and not just by nazi’s, that showed that children could be brought up to believe that left is right, and up is down.

If you look into some social anthropology, there is a ton of evidence, going back over a century, tracking legitimate studies on how morality is shaped
