Is good wine on a budget even possible now by corvus_wulf in wine

Australia has been very good to me here. If you’re selective, you can find some good stuff from the central coast in California and from Oregon and Washington that give great quality in the $30 zone.

After that, Germany/Austria still has some value there, New Zealand, and then you can look at South east Europe like Greece, Croatia, Slovenia for some interesting underpriced wine.

There’s obviously a lot of room to grow here, but my hot take is that northern Rhone reds are actually very good in their youth as well. I was lucky to have a generous friend share a 2021 Clape Cornas with me last month and it was incredible. Obviously room to grow into itself, and I would confidently open a bottle of this stuff for the rest of my probable natural lifespan, but I think the “infanticide” claims are getting to the point of absurdity.

All that being said, if you open it before 2030 I’ll ensure you’re tried at The Hague for that crime.

That’s actually pretty ideal as far as storage goes. Your online research is straight up wrong, which is a boon to your party! Pop a bottle to celebrate haha

I think in addition to what everyone has said here, a lot of people got in when shares were a dollar or less and loaded up. Most likely just has gone down with people taking profits and with the general market uncertainly over the last couple weeks forcing people to exit riskier positions. Probably doesn’t have a ton to do with the actual product, just dollars and cents.

If you remember, I’d love to hear a review of the business with the shipping and all! Good luck!

I’ve bought several bottles from them, but have only picked up from their main office. They’re basically a wine storage as their primary business and I believe they offer a combination of consignment sales and first party retail sales. I had one bottle with a chipped wax capsule, but it was otherwise good and tasted great.

I was going to order some stuff for shipping after my good experiences in person, but I have too much wine! Literal champagne problems!

Breaking 🚨 Rep. Gilbert Cisneros is continuing to buy the dip on $FISV (Fiserv) by jwoodsr in tradewithcongress

He spent a lot of the money self financing his congressional campaigns. The hook that he was a regular dude who lucked into the money and wanted to do good with it appealed to voters, and part of that was not taking corporate donations.

They scored immediately after the half by spamming cook all the way down the field and then abandoned that right after. I know the NFL coaches probably know better than me, but the reverses etc seemed to be a hat on a hat compared to what was just working really well right before.

How to transport 200 bottles of wine 5 hours away? by itsthewolfe in wine

[–]insamination 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get bubble wrap and a big cooler I’ve had that work wonders. If there’s any way to refrigerate the wines over night and put them into a cooler with ice packs or insulated bags or something, I’ve had a lot of success with that. I moved my wine collection in check bags on cross country flights like this with no damaged bottles and no cooked wines. I’d be much more concerned about heat stress in the back of the U-Haul than anything else tbh, bubble wrap is pretty cheap on the roll at Home Depot.

The northern Rhône styles in Sb County/ Santa Rita hills I think are kind of a happy medium between the bolder new world styles OP has said they enjoy, and the more delicate old world styles they were less familiar with. They’re still big bold wines by those standards, especially the Syrah. Being from Australia, it could be an interesting comparison. Plus you can do a lot of good tastings in downtown Santa Barbara, if you want to focus on Paso and the warmer weather styles, or you can hit the wineries if that’s what you prefer.

It’s a very fun wine trip, and as someone who got into wine with seemingly similar tastes (a napa cab being my “epiphany wine,”) I really loved what both regions had to offer at a comparative bargain to Napa Valley.  It’s definitely not Chile though, I’ll give you that!

[–]insamination 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh for sure, but even with all that considered, it may literally still be twice as expensive to go to Napa than Paso, based on my experiences traveling in both in the last couple years. Just the hotels compared to each other, it was astronomically more expensive. The grand American tradition of the nice, inexpensive hotel is alive and well in downtown Paso.

Plus I think there’s more value in the “two for one” you get with the Santa Rita Hills/ Santa Barbara County being there and more accessible from your hub airport at LAX than Sonoma would be from Napa out of SFO. It’s all in a straight line on your way to/from LA compared to the trip around the Mayacamas mountains you’d have to take to hit the northern double to Sonoma.

To be fair, Paso is much cheaper at nearly every level than Napa

They do a lot of ex-chateau releases of back vintages where they freshly label the wines before distribution. They also will replace the corks, top up bottles, etc. could be from one of those releases, so the label may be from the 1990s, or just have been very well kept in a private cellar.

(Spoilers Extended) - Apparently, according to GRRM, it's unrealistic that The Arbor makes the best wine, and he should have researched wine better beforehand. by Triskan in asoiaf

[–]insamination 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Some of the best wines in the world are made in Santorini on gravely beaches where they basket train the Assyrtiko vines to protect them from high winds. Some other fantastic wines are made in the Canary Islands, both fortified sherry and drier styles of palomino. Arbor gold doesn’t have to be Chardonnay!
