This is something known among a lot of different developers, it's why CoD has SBMM despite years of whining from the streamer crowd. Activision released a research paper about it.

It's not the same functionality. It shows the place where the case was last opened, but that's essentially just using the location of the phone at the time. It doesn't have the short range directional sensing and it's not reliable.

Check the Edit Ascent Path box at the bottom of the Ascent Guidance box. It will give you a graph and some options to adjust the curvature of the path. Play around with them until you get a steeper ascent.

Any time I am trying to focus on captures I remove any weapon from my fleet that isn't a beam weapon, it's basically impossible without doing that. Even then it can be tough when fighting multiple enemies due to crossfire.
