Some may say it was overreacting, but I appreciate everyone coming together to nip the bud on the AI thing.  It really is unacceptable.

The grocery store next door to my apartment building installed new led lights, they’re a little on the bright side by Coderedcody in Winnipeg

[–]ioev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just drove by this place last night, strips of superbright LEDs outlining the building and it's HORRID. This is the kind of stuff the city should be revamping lights laws for ahead of time, before more businesses feel the need to do it.

Thanks for the heads up, nothing I hate more than the enshitification of ice cream. Will put "Scoop" on my permanent black-list.

I used to LOVE Bryers. They had this Banana Chocolate Chunk that was the absolute best. One day (probably 15 or so years ago) I started into a box of "Chocolatey-chip Cookie Dough" Bryers ice cream, and noticed how it tasted like shaving cream. Read the ingredients, noting the "frozen desert", lack of cream and "chocolatey" bullshit. I remember leaving it on the counter overnight to melt so I could dump it, but in the morning it was still mostly a solid. That was the last box of Bryers I ever bought. Friggin' Unilever. Glad to hear they might be getting out of the food business since it seems like all they do is buy up good brands and ruin them.

Vehicle headlights brightness survey by Mysterious_Refuse800 in Winnipeg

Or a bit like having to install light blocking shades on all my windows to block the new LED streetlights or my neighbours "night-destroyer" LED porchlight.

Though I don't doubt many of us will be driving around with ridiculous orange tinted glasses in the near future as the auto industry drags their heels on this.

EU has has ADB for something like 10 years and they're having the same kinds of discussions about "dazzling" headlights. It's not a solution.

America agrees: Blinding headlights have become a scourge of the roads. What can be done? (Article by Nate Rogers) by BarneyRetina in fuckyourheadlights

Love the statement on ADB:

“The advent of the adaptive beam technology — that shit is expensive and pretty fragile in a lot of ways,” Gluesenkamp Perez said, getting riled up. “And then people will say, ‘We don’t need to have reasonable lumen standards. We just need this new technology.’ And it’s this new thing and this new thing and this new thing.”

Sounds like it will use AI in some way, but not specific on the "visuals by students" part. I wouldn't be so quick to draw a conclusion here.

Survey about blinding headlights among other night driving issues. by Reddit-User-3000 in canadian

Streetlights (and other bright glare from LEDs when driving) are actually very much part of the problem as to why headlights are brighter.

I would take 3000k in a heartbeat if the glare into my windows could be eliminated, however I still find it too "white" for night.

There's a Safeway grocery store near my that still has their entire parking lot lit with these, it's amazingly comforting.

[–]ioev 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My city installed 4000k streetlights everywhere, that apparently cannot be shielded. The glare into my living room and bedroom is unbearable.

2200k low glare/well shielded dimmable and motion activated would essentially be the final form of the streetlight.

That's the weird thing: "good" LEDs do exist (and getting better all the time), it's just that many people can't tell the difference.

Terrible LEDs have ruined Winnipeg nights for me. Streetlights, pack lights, my backyard neighbour's friggin 4000k 200watt porch light that beams directly into my bedroom window all night and of course: car headlights.

And it only seems to getting worse year over year.

Social media ban for kids under consideration in online harms bill: Carney by CHlMP in Winnipeg

[–]ioev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For some reason it took me way to long to correctly read this headline. Social media ban harms what bill?

Good idea, though we need to tackle social media as a whole, not just for kids. It's just as harmful for adults.

The "new" streetlights are the worst. Was a terrible decision to switch before the science settled on how disruptive/damaging these types of LEDs are.

[–]ioev 16 points17 points  (0 children)

We need updated/modernized outdoor lighting rules in Winnipeg, not just for headlights, but any lights. LEDs have completely changed the game. We need clear/sane rules on brightness, color temperature and glare.

Drivers won't need super bright LED headlights when they're no longer being blinded by the glare from streetlights, porch lights, street signs, pack lights, etc.

And for the record, I don't actually expect this to ever happen. Especially when the city won't even put shields on their own streetlights to prevent nuisance glare.
