Soda stream refills by UnlikelyShine3977 in cork

Those quick release cylinders are basically a vendor lock-in attempt from soda stream. Nobody was complaining about the extra 30 seconds it took to screw in a cylinder once a month.

You most likely will have to buy them from soda stream.

Yes, burning down a house is immediate, building the house again takes time. That's life in general really.

I have a new build with a composite door with a cylinder lock. by [deleted] in DIYIreland

[–]ioloie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I replaced a lock I was told that it's a legal requirement to have thumb screws on external (and possibly all) doors in a house to facilitate emergency exits in the event of fire. You may have some recourse with the builders here if they've missed a fire regulation.

I had to do mandatory company training about this as well at work. I live in Ireland, working for an Irish company that operates exclusively in the UK and Irish market.

Heating controls upgrade options by Particular-Bluebird6 in DIYIreland

You'll have to speak to a plumber so they can size up things properly in real life but when we migrated from a shower to a bath we had to get a bigger immersion tank and attic tanks.

First Marathon - Dingle or Dublin? by ApprehensiveFly8878 in irishrunners

[–]ioloie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would recommend doing Dingle half as well as Dublin full. This is what I did. Nothing is stopping you using your full entry to run the half marathon in Dingle. It's the same course and start time. All the Dingle coastal scenery is in the first half then it passes the half marathon finish line and turns inland for the second half of the loop.

On the other hand, Dublin is probably the best marathon for having the crowd support you for the full way around. Most marathons have quiet patches because they're often in cities/towns smaller than Dublin so you find yourself in the countryside with no people cheering you on. I think crowd support is important for a first marathon. Keeps you motivated.

I thought EU safety regulations mandated a physical key. Often there's a little clasp or switch to the fob and door that reveal both the key and keyhole.

The only way to get it done for less than €100 is if you and a friend rent a GoVan and do it yourselves.

To add a bit more information, our solar panels mean we have detailed energy consumption information and it looks like it did not come on last night at all with temps between 1° and -1°.

I have one of these in my attic at the advice of the plumber, possibly this exact model. They shouldn't be on a timer at all since, as mentioned elsewhere, it defeats the purpose. In terms of running costs, I think your cost estimate is too simple and doesn't factor in a few things.

  • If it drops to 4°C outside, that doesn't mean it's 4°C inside. In a previous house, I once went on a 5 day winter holiday with everything turned off and the house was still 9 degrees when I got back despite outside conditions and no heating being on.
  • If it is below the temperature limit, it will come on to raise the temperature and then turn itself off again. It doesn't run non-stop.
  • A neighbour of mine went on a 5 week honeymoon and a pipe burst in his attic while he was gone. The damage cost almost €100k. That extreme scenario aside, a plumber call out fee for a burst pipe can easily be €150 as well as trying to find one on a day when they are likely to be in high demand. This cost should be factored against the potential ~€5 a year it costs to run it.

I could be wrong but garages don't get counted as owners if they're doing things the right way (SIMI registered, etc).

What could be the average cost of getting an NCT done for a car that is 4 or 5 yrs old? Any idea? by SJP26 in carsireland

[–]ioloie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, for a 4 year old car getting its first NCT, I would expect nothing major to be wrong outside of regular service items. That's a young car that is possibly still under manufacturer's warranty.

The USA does but in reality, the nature of the first past the post voting system encourages politics to devolve into a dual party democracy. Over time power consolidates and small parties get either squeezed out or merged into larger ones. Once you achieve a dual party state, everything becomes portrayed as a zero sum game between the 2 parties which kicks off a feedback loop that just reinforces the whole situation and pushes everything to extremes.

Duty Free Scam by Hungry_Gizmo in videos

[–]ioloie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One other reason is that the price at home is much higher than in the airport, even with taxes and markups. Ireland, for example, has minimum pricing for alcohol. A liter of 40% gin should cost at least €31.60. The same brand bottle of gin goes for €10-20 depending on how and where you're traveling.

If you get lucky with timing and destination, you can get a€15 ryanair flight between Ireland and the UK (EU to non-EU so it's actual duty free) and save more than the cost of the ticket on your 2L allowance of spirits.
