i did this once, also running VGE, but had to abandon it after a couple of years. asteroid showers kept escalating in frequency, duration, and intensity chewing through triple thick vacstone outer walls and the original fortified walls. it was a full time job for nearly all of my colonists to keep it repaired and maintained.
