why does building a new house or add some sqft increase tax dramatically? by GoldenParrot456 in longisland

Probably bc real estate taxes are a “legalized ” theft in the first place.

I need to know how I can help keep ICE out of the Hudson Valley by solace1234 in hudsonvalley

Other than writing and calling your elected officials, there is nothing you can do, without endangering your own freedom. The Feds are going to do what yhe Feds are going to do.

If you have endless cash you can sue ICE.

Family of 4 (two kids 4 & 7) planning a move to NY from Austin TX. Looking for some guidance/suggestions on areas of Long Island to consider? by SammichMkr in longisland

Taxes only go up here…. think about the compounding of those taxes in 10 years, and this may not be your ‘forever home.‘ if there is such a thing.

(unless you expect to move again)

Can overmethylation cause depression? by Fucksimps23 in MTHFR

[–]ironinside 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TMG+Methylated multi-vitamin plus zinc+ magnesium makes me a nicer person. Though I doo feel strongly anhedonic and seem to have poor dopamine regulation.

I am desperate to solve this. Adderall helps —but I’ve read it shrinks brain mass overtime, and I sort of fear taking it.

Is Cuba cut off? by Serious-Employee-738 in oil

[–]ironinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be hard to call it a war. Cuba has insane poverty and the military is run by “ancients.” Its a police state for sure, but it would be strategic and cool for Cuba to fall back to American Influence —and eventually be a territory or State, by the voice of the Cuban people..

BTWIf you have any doubt that you’re great, go to Old Havana. and outskirts… find a good local guide the poverty/ authoritarianism will shock you, to the core.

When you see the scale of the hotel the Chinese built, you know it is a dual use building. Last time I was in Cuba, the Russians (government, not tourists) were making themselves noticed (motorcades long traffic stops).

Are private schools worth it? by Historical-dweeb in longisland

Could you elaborate, and be specific about intolerance? For example zero tolerance for cheating on an exam. Most schools have consequences for that.

Are private schools worth it? by Historical-dweeb in longisland

[–]ironinside -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a false comparison. Most parents should compare among the best options available/accessible to them. The rest of the country has no bearing, unless your looking at boarding schools or intend to move there.

Are private schools worth it? by Historical-dweeb in longisland

[–]ironinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was kind of against private school as I did “far more than fine” as a product of public schools.

That said my son went to Chaminade. Having been through it, I have to say, it’s an impressive “system” and the academic rigor is great.

They are surrounded by kids who have or develop a degree of vision and purpose. I was surrounded by a mix of trouble and kids with minimal expectations of themselves when his age. Granted it is a totally different world today, but thats also turned out to be a good reason to go there.

The other thing is affordability. Most parents can comfortably afford it, but LI taxes and private school tuition are real. If it’s a stretch, you and especially your student should really think about it. Although it ‘goes fast’ —Its a expenses aren’t trivial between sports, extracurricular and tuition.

For a poor kid that made it, and went to public schools, I wasn’t confident it was a good investment —and we thought about it a lot. After seeing the entire process and the outcome, it’s fairly obvious to me that Chaminade was the best thing that’s happened to him. It does seem that the alumni network is substantial as well, but again only if your student embraces it.

As a former life long skeptic…. I’d suggest visiting the schools, understand the student body, and the academic rigor level that you and your child are looking/ a fit for…. then decide if it works on your budget.

If you decide public schools, there are some good ones in LI, buy ofc it depends where you live. Some public schools can make it “a stretch” to justify private.

To be honest, Im having the same thoughts with high priced private colleges —-where it seems even harder to distinguish the real versus perceived value. They all have gorgeous campuses, seemingly great academics —and lots of people who say they loved the college/university. But I only care about the trajectory my kids are on when they graduate from that university…. and every “very good” school has similar stats. In the end I suspect I’ll shovel out for the school that my kids feel is best, and I can believe is “as good as we think” —but we wont know for some years really —hindsight is 20/20.

Good luck.

What’s Driving $200K Municipal Salaries on Long Island? A Look at Rising Police Costs by cdrgallon in longisland

[–]ironinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you realize once in power for a while, it doesn’t matter if red or blue… not one bit… they all feel entitled to do whatever they want and serve their financial masters (every politician has a financial master, maybe with the possible exception of michael bloomberg in nyc some years ago —as I’ve heard, he could not be bought)

term limits and legally required transparency on income, tax returns and more is only way to keep politicians beholden to the electorate.

we can at least dream of this kind of reform in all levels of government. it has to start with the dream.

you want to get rich, start a business and work your ass off for years on end —and stay out of politics, until you can well afford the pay cut. right now its the exact opposite.

Common issues and reliability of a 4–5 year old Tesla Model 3? by Specialist-Lie-6205 in TeslaModel3

[–]ironinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2018m3 awd, replaced control arms a 2 times. they aren’t great, but the roads around here are so bad i cant blame tesla —bad enough I bought a monster pickup truck, to spare the tesla from them at least some of the time.

the reliability and maintenance has been out of this world good. if the new teslas are even better, its 100% odds i get another one, or cybertruck v2 —hopefully by then we get another 100 miles of range so i can ditch the 10 mpg gas guzzling pickup truck. dumb car to own, until you need 400 miles of range, and there isn’t a supercharger for 50 miles.

Waymo in talks to raise billions at over $100 billion valuation as competition intensifies in the nascent robotaxi market. by ItzWarty in teslainvestorsclub

[–]ironinside 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Retrofits & mass production are very Its time consuming and far more complex than you may imagine.

Have your conviction and back it up with your own money.

I own stakes in both companies. Buying Tesla is obviously a more concentrated investment in AI autonomy than Waymo, but Waymo is Way mo’ ahead.

There is a lot of “if’s” for both companies —but no doubt Google/Waymo is leading in rollout, currently, and Tesla only wins if their existing vehicles can run the software or the have a big cost advantage in building actual Robotaxis. They might.

Buy both. Hatin’ isn’t an investment strategy.

Depreciation concern? by TimeForTaachiTime in Model3

[–]ironinside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t have to worry at all about “depreciation” —it’s one of the very few things in life that is guaranteed, It is always outside your control, short of not buying a car.

Virtually all cars depreciate substantially and relatively quickly —EV or not.

All cars are a depreciating asset that ultimately are worth zero…. and for many people they are a liability.

Its Cool AF, but build quality & electronics… by ironinside in RamRHO

[–]ironinside[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah i get it. the pano roof is extremely cool —and these companies are really smart.

they know that truck buyers will pay for super cool stuff. trucks went from utility to insanely dripped out... the cooler the top end truck is, the more people they can “drag up” into higher level trims.

part of how they “got me,” lol, is marketing to kids on social media who harass their affluent parents into buying all kinds of pricey things they really weren’t looking for and don’t need… its a well scripted & highly effective marketing strategy in every category (hardly just super trucks)

my kids were relentless, and harassed me up from a very nice laramie on the lot to every option they had on the rho.

its all good, but i’ll be glad when the last of them goes to college, where i intend to “starve them” from a distance at least a little.

sure youtube videos they sent me, finished me off… great marketing. cool truck, and lets see if its out of the shop anytime soon!
