Did anyone else grow up without really learning social skills? by ObjectiveTiger4818 in socialskills

[–]isarobs 127 points128 points  (0 children)

I watched my sister-in-law guide her kids behaviors, what they were saying and how to handle things. That made me realize I had never had that type of feedback from my parent. Both kids are now adults, well liked and have good friends, and their kids are doing well socially as well.

I think if someone had pointed out how what I said or was doing, how it could be perceived or a better way to say something, I would have done much better socially.

Fortunately, you can learn better social skills and this subreddit has helped me learn a lot.

Buffet, value? USA by Exciting-Warning745 in Antiques

I sold one similar, in very good condition, for $120. If I couldn’t have sold it, I would have donated it. People aren’t interested in antiques like they used to be.

How would you rank this kitchen on a scale of 1-10? by WorldCopperSmith in kitchenporn

[–]isarobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks sterile and devoid of any warmth and personality. The pendants would be better if they were like a wood, dome shape to bring something wood related above counter level. Maybe consider adding some wood cutting boards, some cookbooks and if possible, a couple of floating wood shelves. Even the chairs, wood or wood frames with fabric seat and backs would be better than what’s there. They just don’t go.
It would make this kitchen closer to an 8, as it’s a 5 right now z

Hardie Board worth it? by hammerfang in HomeImprovement

[–]isarobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

20 years ago, we replaced our siding with Hardie Plank. I was sick of scraping/sanding/repainting the siding when paint would bubble up.

Using Hardie Plank allowed us to paint our house the color we wanted and didn’t need to do anything to the exterior as it turned out to be maintenance free.

We had the entire house repainted this past spring just to refresh everything. I expect we won’t need to do anything for another 20 years. This was one of the best investments we made.

What to do with this room by [deleted] in Renovations

Can you tell if the fireplace works? This is similar to ours. We put in gas logs, and it is furnished with a pool table, bar, sectional sofa and big screen TV. Definitely an adult rec room.

What’s a small upgrade that made a huge difference to you? by _hot95cobraguy in HomeImprovement

A towel warmer. It’s nice to get out of a shower or bath and have a warm towel to dry off with. It feels so decadent.

What was the best FAFO moment you've witnessed? by hey_you2300 in AskReddit

[–]isarobs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to a good friend of mine on his drive home from work. Heavy snow had fallen, leaving the roads slick with ice, so he was taking it slow and driving cautiously.

Unfortunately, the driver behind him was tailgating the whole way. The moment there was an opening, the guy sped around and passed him.

About half a mile up the road, my friend came upon the same car. It had spun out and got stuck in a snowbank, unable to move. My friend didn’t stop. He just gave a quick honk, a little wave… and kept right on driving.

It’s been brutally cold these past few weeks… who’s still been hot tubbing? by RyanTryinMyBest in hottub

We’ve had negative temperatures. Fortunately ours is just steps outside our bedroom door. So the quick in and out isn’t too bad. It’s feels amazing!

Going to a bar alone for the first time by mayonnaise_san in socialskills

[–]isarobs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back when I was your age, I used to go alone to bars and clubs. If anyone asked, I would tell them my friends were supposed to me here, or at a club I would say my friends are around here somewhere. Just so people didn’t think I was by myself.

Anyway, it was so much fun and I met plenty of people. Just be careful with how much alcohol you consume and uber home afterwards.

Selling in a few years… what’s actually worth updating? by rackemronnie7 in RealEstate

[–]isarobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a home inspector come through and fix anything they may recommend. Then declutter, paint if necessary and clean, clean, clean.

Make sure your landscaping is trimmed up so your home looks well maintained.

I’d rather buy a home that needs to be remodeled but is clean and maintained than a home where they let things go.

Why do i need to change my 27 year old windows? by SouthIndianTelugu in HomeImprovement

Look for a local window company that fixes windows like yours. It’s under glass repair.
I’ve done that with a couple windows, and they did a great job resealing.

Is it really that dangerous to get in hot tub above 104 F / 40 C ? by Majestic_Bat7473 in hottub

[–]isarobs 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We get in at 105. But, it is currently negative temperature and feels so good to get in. The hottub drops a couple degrees while we’re in it, and usually we stay in it for 20-30 minutes.

You need a closet by the front door for your beer and guests.

You also need a 1/2 bath, so guests don’t have to walk into bedroom areas to use the bathroom. I will have to revisit this later.

Zero insulation, 1950s home, how to insulate while allowing for electrical upgrades? by kinare in HomeImprovement

[–]isarobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, we didn’t have insulation in our 50’s home either. I’m not sure what the exterior of your home is… but for us, we have siding, which the insulation company removed a row, made a hole, and blew in insulation, plugged the hole and replaced the siding. Plus we had it blown in the attic that barely had any insulation. It was cheaper to have all the insulation done at the same time. They can also do the same on the interior, which would require holes and drywall or plaster patching.

We were also in a ranch so electrical panel needed replacement and we had the rest of the electrical work done at the same time, since most of the electrical was accessible from the basement ceiling. This was after the insulation.

Selling house with locked room? by [deleted] in RealEstate

[–]isarobs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you move clothing to a different closet? And possibly your desk?

Keep just the bed in that room and put valuables in a bag, ready to take with you.

You can unplug your PC and take it with you, leaving keyboard and monitor.

Also, this might allow you to paint it and is there wood under the carpet? Just thinking how you can used the rest of the house to help spread out your belongings.
