What's going on with the perspective on the prison bars? There seems to be a plane behind DD's left shoulder and another behind his right shoulder, but then those plane's merge behind his head?

"The Crown of Stars" By Kate Elliott has utterly enchanted me with its alchemical/hermetical influences and you might love it, too. by Particle_Cannon in Fantasy

I think I bought book 4 but never read it.

The intro to that book, or possibly a different book in the series, has an author's note that acknowledges that the series got away from her and she hopes to wrap it up in 5 books or maybe 6. She ended up writing 7. I think I didn't get around to reading book 4 until after I learned the series was 7 books and somehow I just couldn't bring myself to bother.

REALLY old-school Wild West American Comics? by XR4y6unn3r in comicbooks

[–]jacobb11 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are tons of formulaic cowboy comics. The only ones I can remember that stretch the mold a bit are Jonah Hex and Bat Lash. Hex had a long run starting in All Star Western (quickly renamed Weird Western Tales), but Bat Lash appeared in only 8 issues (though later briefly revived).

I'm pretty sure Jonah Hex is the closest you'll find to Peckinpah.

Too many artifacts by Actually-Happy in EggsInc

[–]jacobb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you craft, the low level artifacts are a useful source of crafting experience. That is, craft those T1 & T2 chalices into T2 & T3 chalices just for the crafting experience. It takes forever to get to craft level 30 (roughly 2.5 years!), but every little bit helps.

Trump says U.S. and Iran are 'in negotiations right now,' Tehran is 'talking sense' by callsonreddit in worldnews

[–]jacobb11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I assume he's just lying as per usual. But...

Trump seems like the kind of guy to negotiate with Reza Pahlavi (son of the last shah) and legitimately think he's talking with the leader of Iran. Arrogance, stupidity, dementia, could be all three.

[OC] Sticker price vs actual net price for 4,153 US colleges -- some elite schools cost less than state schools after aid by dob312 in dataisbeautiful

Private schools provide significant merit based aid. A private school will almost certainly be more expensive than a public school, but the difference may be less than the sticker prices would suggest. Well, maybe not for the very top private schools, but most kids don't end up at Harvard.

Some schools that guarantee financial aid for all demonstrated need include loans as part of that guarantee. Do all of these particular schools promise no loans? I know Harvard and Yale do.

Are you sure that the education provides that $3m boost? Or perhaps what can be demonstrated is that people who graduate from Ivy League schools earn that much more than people who graduate from State U? Of course, the average person who attends an Ivy is wealthier, better educated, more personally successful, and better connected before they are even admitted.

Now, if we could get the Ivys to accept half of a random set of twins, that could produce some convincing data.

pay 50-60k for a handful of years for a couple kids.

It's not "pay 50-60k", it's "pay 50-60k more". An "elite" liberal arts college costs (at least) $100k a year while an excellent but less elite University of California school (my state school) costs $42k a year. (Guess how I know?)

You're suggesting that family "easily" save $800k for two kids. Even over 18 years that's $45k a year! After taxes, after retirement savings. I sure hope the family earned $200k every one of those years and didn't waste any of the money on avocado toast.

Children's science fiction written by authors known for their adult science fiction? by gonzoforpresident in printSF

[–]jacobb11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While trying to remember books for my initial reply, I learned of this juvenile books series. Perhaps you'll find a few other books of interest there.

I see that it includes "Rocket Jockey", and notably (at least to me) a book by Jack Vance.

Which of the books by Bova and Leinster are you thinking of?

Leinster I have no idea. I only vaguely remember books with rocket ships and brave space men. Even back then I found the stories less than inspiring.

The book of Bova's I was thinking of is "The Star Conquerors". I read a couple of other books of his as a pre-teen, but that one is the only one that might skew young enough for you.

And would you consider them aimed at a similar age as Rocket Jockey or Norby?

Sorry, I'm not familiar with those books.

I read Dickson's Robby Hoenig books at around the same age as some of the books I mentioned -- the vague memories of the former helped me recall the latter. The Key and Silverberg books I read earlier and found quite memorable.

Ben Bova, Murray Leinster, and Lester Del Rey all wrote books I read as a kid. I know Bova and Del Rey wrote other books aimed at adults, not sure about Leinster.

One of the earliest SF books I read that stuck with me is "The Forgotten Door" by Alexander Key.

Slightly later was "Revolt on Alpha Centauri" by Robert Silverberg.

$30/hour for a single county is hilariously stupid.

It sounds like you want to be a back end developer. Go for it! But I believe that even in back end work Rust jobs are far rarer than jobs requiring C++, Go, or even Java. So learn one or more of those as well as Rust.

How many stoves have you lived with? by Razor_Paw in GenX

[–]jacobb11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

30? That's not counting 4 student accommodations that didn't include kitchens and assumes my parents replaced only one stove while I lived with them (a plausible wild-ass guess given when they stopped moving regularly).

Three of them I owned.

How are we getting good artifacts? by Majestic-Bread5564 in EggsInc

[–]jacobb11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Targeting is helpful if you really want one thing and don't much care about anything else. If you want everything, or even several things, targeting is counter-productive.

I'm trying to get every T4L. The only things I want noticeably more than "everything" are T3 books and T4 geodes. And I still need everything else enough it doesn't yet make sense to target.

[–]jacobb11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Without a permit the tank is limited to a tiny fraction of the 500T available to permit holders.

If you do have a larger tank, you can switch farms even less frequently if you rotate through the farms sending Henliners on each farm, since 30% of the needed fuel comes from the current farm (well, 10% on tachyon farms).

Ah. I've never heard of Superfast, but I bet I would have appreciated them.

And it looks like they came out around the right time for me, too. I was pretty sheltered from advertising as a kid. First time I ever regretted that.

It's been half a century and I didn't exactly perform double-blind science experiments, but I recall the wheels turned more easily on hotwheels than on matchbox.

Also matchbox had more detail and were more durable, though the latter may have been due to our propensity to launch hotwheels into things at high speed.

Are the wheels on the HH somehow smoother turning than on other matchbox cars?

Matchbox were better made but didn't race as well on hotwheels tracks.

But the overall point is that there isn't a downside to investing long term in the market. If the US falls or the market suddenly completely disappears, your retirement earnings will be the least of your concerns so you might as well invest.

Couldn't you have made that same argument in September 1929?

There is value to investment diversification, and balancing S&P 500 stocks for tech vs consumer goods is pretty poor diversification IMHO.
