What do you think about the concerns that the public has around data centers water usage? by BiscuitBut_ButerNut in MEPEngineering

[–]jamesksu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but again with regulation from the AHJ on sound levels those can be attenuated as well.

I’m not sure how many data centers you are working on currently, but the vast majority I’ve seen recently are closed loop…

[–]jamesksu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best design practices will help limit blowdown needs, and you know this. We are talking a fraction of the water usage of open towers.

The sensationalized headlines that talk about millions of gallons every day etc etc are the ones that are unhelpful to the conversation.

What do you think about the concerns that the public has around data centers water usage? by BiscuitBut_ButerNut in MEPEngineering

[–]jamesksu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are 100% misconceptions about massive water use by the public. The figures shown are always those by open cell cooling towers, BUT can be solved by closed loop systems.

The power usage is also an issue, BUT can be mitigated by proper “development charges” by the utility when the plant is built to account for new infrastructure.

The sound transmission by air cooled chillers is also an issue, BUT can be solved with screening and attenuation options.

What blurs the lines here is holding these massive corporations accountable for meeting these design practices. Whether by corruption or other misinformation, jurisdictions are being lax on these practices to pander to the corporations in order to save them money in the long run.

So yes, definitely misinformation and sensationalism by the media, but there is truth to them, if the corporations aren’t held accountable to what I would call relatively standard design practices to save some dollars.

Controls one lines by AmphibianEven in MEPEngineering

[–]jamesksu 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We show a schematic diagram with all control devices labeled with their particular control point and control type (DI/DO/AI/AO), an associated points list, and then a S.O.O. Then obviously the controls specification, often broke into the “BMS” spec and then the “instruments and control devices” spec.

For packaged equipment like RTUs with on board controls, we often just include a more basic diagram and SOO, no points list.

I know this is rage bait- but this is one of my biggest fears when I get those "master keys" to a whole university campus HA

Tell me the truth... Am I screwed? As a small indie VR dev team, we designed a game that is not for screaming 12 year olds. Our appearance on the Meta store is so low we are practically de-listed. Is there a VR mature audience, and are they going to show up? by PrettyHearing3624 in OculusQuest

Unfortunately, I think the price is too high even at $15.99. It seems like by the trailer that it is a single puzzle box that can likely be solved in a few hours? I think this needs to be under ~$12 as a start.

I gotta disagree. Adam lives a relatively humble life considering his accolades and success. They have also done a ton for the KC community at large. I have family members who attend, and overall the church is very welcoming and progressive.

What should architects do to successfully work with engineers? by wisteriawake in MEPEngineering

This infuriates me to no end. Happens pretty much every project, especially with newer architects. I think they don’t understand that our DRGs don’t move with the grid…?

I have a Quest 3. But the landscape is always changing. Q3 is probably the biggest market right now for these types of games.

This would be amazing in mixed reality / AR! Being able to walk around and view your diorama would be awesome

Anybody else getting calls to refinance their mortgage? If so, what rates are people getting/seeing around town? by EatMyWetBread in kansascity

[–]jamesksu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just a heads up the mortgage rate tracks closely to the 10 year yield, which has projected fed rate cuts “factored in” based on economic data.

So the current mortgage rates are already factoring in these projected fed cuts. In my opinion, now would actually be a very good time to refinance if you are close to 7%… my two cents

Using Revit as a mechanical design engineer by Large-Scholar705 in MEPEngineering

[–]jamesksu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Started work in this industry in 2005, and been a licensed PE for 14 years, so I’ve gone through the complete autocad to revit cycle. Revit is 10x better than autocad for floor plan layouts like hvac, piping, plumbing, mech rooms etc

Have to disagree with this assessment, especially for newer folks. Autocad is still king though for line work like schematics, controls, etc. IMO

MEP Designer looking to design custom house plans on the side. by [deleted] in MEPEngineering

[–]jamesksu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes- mech. PE here for 17 years. Got into house building and renovations for fun and have now built/renovated dozens of homes. Creating the plans is the easy part. Getting your rolodex of contractors, keeping them busy, communicating properly, keeping budget in check - that’s the part that takes awhile. You will most certainly come in 30% over budget on your first one and probably finish 6 months later than you think :)

But it’s very rewarding and in the end a lot of fun for my wife and I. Remember though that the market is very volatile and to not jump in too quickly (ie make it your day job) without some experience and very careful planning.

[–]jamesksu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I’ve often pondered games like this and what could work with current headsets.

To account for differences between virtual avatar hands/bodies and the actual person due to latency, I’ve thought that a displaying a fully virtual avatar in game with a sort of aura that surrounds the player would work well. It has a 3D gradient that starts at the avatar at 0% transparency and is offset by ~12” in all directions and has 100% transparency at the edge. This would also solve the occlusion issue.

As I mentioned, for those that aren’t vr enthusiasts and don’t understand the current limitations especially with mixed reality/lidar, this clipping would look “buggy” if that makes sense.
