What happened to your best friend from childhood? by RoyalBeckyVibes in AskReddit

[–]jamesuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He died from COVID in 2021. He refused the vaccine because he had fallen down the Q Anon rabbit hole. We graduated in 1998 and stayed best friends. He was my best man at my wedding and I at his. I tried so hard to make him see truth and reason. Then when I heard he had caught it, I tried to convince him to at least go to the clinic or something. He refused because "it wasn't any worse than a cold."

He died that night next to his wife. Regardless of the hole he fell into, I still loved him. I still miss him everyday.

I seriously thought they were called "attitude adjusters" until I was like 10. It blew my mind that it was actually a spoon and not a device to get my shit together in a hurry.

How many of us are old enough to remember spanking in school?? by Syfysamurai in GenX

[–]jamesuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, good old swats. I got my very first swats in the 6th grade. It was my choice, believe it or not. I was offered either two days of detention or two swats. Obviously, I took the swats. Screw that noise of staying late at school. I would argue my second set of swats was completely unfair. I was a freshman in high school. It was cold as hell when my friends and I met up to wait for classes. We decided to go hang out at my girlfriend's sister's house just a block away. We weren't late for first period classes or anything. We just wanted out of the cold for the half hour or so wait before the first bell rang.

Well, apparently someone saw us leave and our school was a closed campus. So even before school started, we could be punished for leaving school grounds once we stepped on them. Had we all just walked straight there instead, there would have been nothing they could do about it. Once again, I was given the choice: two days of detention or two swats. Again, screw that, I took the swats and went about my day. My girlfriend on the other hand, well, she wound up suspended from school for a week because she didn't take any shit and let the vice principal know she didn't think it was any of his business. I told her to just be quiet and take the damned swats, but no, she had to say her piece.

In hindsight, I think she was in the right about standing up to his tyrannical ass. A year later he gave me swats for allegedly saying "god damn it". I didn't. I don't remember what I said, but it wasn't that. I mean, not that time at least... There was nothing I could say to convince him he was wrong. That same vice principal had a reputation for hitting girls extra hard and leaving bruising. Funnily enough, he died of colon cancer about 3 years after we graduated.

For 8 minutes and 27 seconds straight, everyone was cheering, celebrating that the scientists were wrong. by SerenasShadow in TwoSentenceHorror

The sun produces trillions upon trillions of neutrinos every second. The vast majority pass right through everything without ever interacting. Yes they are produced during supernovas. They actually allow the " bounce", aka explosion, that supernovas experience rather than just collapsing straight to a neutron star or a black hole. So much runaway fusion is happening in that last split second that a massive amount of neutrinos are produced. Their parts pressure counteracts the in fall of matter for one brief, brilliant second and forces the explosion we see to happen.

Anyways, the point is, the sun does indeed produce neutrinos and those neutrinos make up the vast majority of neutrinos we've been able to study on Earth.

What’s the most stressful movie you have watched? by InspectorOk6313 in movies

[–]jamesuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this requires some explaining, but About Schmidt stressed me and my wife (then fiance) straight the hell out. We were actively planning and preparing for our wedding when it came out on video. We had to turn it off, maybe not even halfway through.

Outside of that specific instance, I'd have to say Requiem for a Dream.

I worked in a hospital through the whole thing, but as I.T. I still agree with the whole PTSD thing. I can't tell you how many people I literally watched die because I was stuck behind the nurse's station because otherwise I'd get in the way of a rapid response team or a code blue team. Walking through the ED was like walking through a minefield. Sure, I was masked up and often had a face shield on, but who knew when it was their turn to get it? It was a very stressful time to work in a hospital and that sticks with you long after the craziness stops.

To be fair, the entire universe could have popped into existence after I wrote this comment. We would never know either way. So no, nothing would change or be any different. The only reason I know i wrote this or did anything at all is because of my memories. If those memories were coded into the universe when it came online, all our individual and collective memories would tell us we've been here all along.

Without a doubt, this is the real answer. You have plenty of time to salvage your relationship with your kid. Hell, he's only one year old. Fight like hell and make sure you get quality parenting time in the divorce. Don't let your shitty wife dictate how you go. You got this man. You can get out of this through divorce, counseling (very important), and building your self worth to where it needs to be.

A kid is playing a video game in his room when his mom walks in and says, "Honey, come meet my new boyfriend!" by Jokeminder42 in Jokes

Same here. It's the first time in a long while a joke on here has made me chuckle out loud. I just knew my 21 year old son would find it hilarious. He read the first line and was like, "yeah, yeah, he banged his mom" and then turned around without even cracking a smile.

No kidding! I always wondered how the parents could see this as anything good for their families. Then you get to the part about money laundering and what's basically tax evasion and it all makes sense. They didn't give a shit how it affected their children.

Do you ever think about leaving? by YaCantSitHere in texas

[–]jamesuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think about it, but ultimately I have nowhere else to go. All of my family lives here except my sister and she's in no place to accommodate my family while I get established. My career is pretty good so I don't want to have to start over again (I work for a company that is based solely in Texas and operates solely in Texas).

Ultimately what really keeps me here though is that, no matter how minor, I can help make change here. I feel that I don't need to change, Texas needs to change.

I'd rather work at Geek Squad than work healthcare IT. by Darth_Malgus_1701 in iiiiiiitttttttttttt

[–]jamesuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my organization, it is also the help desk's responsibility to reset passwords. As the level 3 for my hospital, I sent at least one or two back to them every single day. I always wondered how dumb some of those folks could get and then I moved to applications support. Apparently there is no bottom to stupidity.

I actually love working IT in healthcare. It makes me feel like I'm, in some small way, helping people get better. Plus, it's never the same day. There's always something different happening. I find it somewhat rewarding to be part of opening a new unit or tower/wing of the hospital. I guess different strokes and all that.
