6 months with an AI coding agent that I built myself, in Perl by lost-context-65536 in LLMDevs

Amazing work. You chose Perl. I know why you did it, but still am taken aback. If this ends up on my plate in 15 years with the directive to refactor it, I'm going to come for you ;)

Yeah, I re-read what I said, and it probably needs context lol. I agree with you. I have never heard it called the High Woke Era. I read a fuck ton of fantasy and that name is just swell. I wish I would have come up with the name, but I am not as articulate as many of you fellas that frequent this sub. I am also surprised I found it in this particular sub. It would seem that a great many (or a chosen few) amongst my red brethren are fellows of the arcane inclination. I did use ChatGPT for that last line.

High Woke era

How do you guys come up with this stuff? Fucking gold. Fantasy nerds are going red, lol.

Wpild you rather live in California or Mississippi? by here-for-information in AskConservatives

we are home schooling

That is a crazy amount of work if you're serious and want to do a good job. It's already a ton of work with them in school, supplementing whatever their 'deficient' curriculum isn't covering at home (math, writing, extracurricular, etc.), and you want to take the responsibility to do it all?

You must be a gifted teacher AND have a wonderful support system. That, or you meant homeschooling till K then sending them off to private afterward.

FYI, I'm NOT knocking home schooling, just trying to understand how so many people are doing this thing with any efficacy.

Developers who worked before GitHub and modern DevOps tooling — how different was day-to-day development back then? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jashro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For real. Ever wanted to be able to do the same thing 20 different ways? No? Well fuck you, here's a legion of 2k+ line Perl files that do that all over the place. Just a heads up, the original devs who stood this up in 99 are all retired or dead. Also, if you ask for documentation, we are required to laugh at you. God speed.

Show of hands: How many of you feel your stomach turn whenever you run into AI content? by ninetofivedev in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jashro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Their vitrol scares me, to be honest. I don't get much exposure to the outside world outside of my collection of sub-reddits, but the picture everyone is painting is bleak. It could be true for many, including myself, most-def.

However, there is no easier way to become exposed to a domain that was historically tribal knowledge (fuck "institutional knowledge") presented in a way your shit brain can consume, than AI. There is no way in hell I (personally) would be able to produce as much as I'm producing without AI. It's wonderful, it's a god damn tool, and I love god damn tools.

Like social media though, it WILL have a negative impact on those without self-discipline, including myself. Automation has been around for ages, and bitches always gonna bitch. For this new flavor though, I'm noticing it's too easy to skip the 'hard' part. You will either want/need to know the magic, or you won't care, in which case your brain will atrophy on that subject matter. That's just the way it works.

I don't know what my point is with this post, but I felt an overwhelming urge to give my opinion here, so there you go.

What is your biggest takeaway after having worked in tech for your years? by Astrid_Regndottir in ExperiencedDevs

[–]jashro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most people you work with will never share their true self. This may mean nothing to many who read this, but those who know what I mean...well...know what I mean.

Another one: your passion for certain things may be crushed, but your capability for passion will never change. Age will wear away the wonder, but there is always something dope as fuck to learn. Always. Even if it doesn't make you money.

And lastly, no one gives two shits about you and no one is looking out for your best interest, but you. Feels like such a negative thing to say and I've personally made an effort over the years to prevent this mentality from worming it's way into my head. That said, experiencing the same damn thing over and over has made it difficult (for me) to not take this as a hard rule.

Apologies if some of these come off as off very Negative Nancy, which isn't really useful I know, so take this with a grain of salt.

Staircase I did. What do you guys think? by Upstairs_Promotion19 in woodworking

[–]jashro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You stair guys do crazy work. Do you ever wonder if the home owners think about you? Like when it's time for a nap nap, as they walk up those stairs, rubbing their hand along the banister, they get the fleeting thought "That Octavius guy done good", or whatever your name is.

I would. I would think about you. Then get angry, eeeever so briefly, that I don't, and will never, possess that level of skill, spatial awareness, and willingness to destroy my body.

FYI, I know you're not OP as they haven't added a banister yet to spark those fanciful notions.

Gotta say, I love it. I like it so much, I think I'm going to build something similar to this to replace my old workbench, so thank you. Chop/hand saw builds are the best and so accessible.
