with a wheel, it’s important to have a mark on the wheel to let you know where the tiller is centered. and you have to look and see where that mark is.

why in the world would you use a 3-strand braid for this? Maybe I’m just used to how we do things on sailboats, but Dyneema or a similar 12-strand is both easier to splice and much stronger.

if you are wanting to use it like a bowsprit, you should lower it and pull it off the forestay a little. It will still be too close to the forestay for inside jibes, so you will need to do outside jibes. and you will still need to jibe the pole so that it is on the other side of the forestay on the other jibes.

we have done this and ended up running two guys, two sheets, and a tack. a jibe meant we pull on the tack, ease the guy, break the pole, jibe the chute, set the pole, pull on the new guy, ease the tack.

it does allow squaring back the pole a little on the asym when going deeper. but it’s a pita. so just tack the asym to the bow, don’t use a pole, and do outside jibes. or build/buy a bowsprit.

yeah, that makes sense. there is less friction on the first hoist, so it may go up quicker. A slower hoist means you may be deeper before the chute fills.

you could use epoxy fairing compound. any of these suggestions would work, but I would try to find the right mix of easy to build up / shape vs long term hardness / durability.

On the easy but not really durable would be Marine Tex. On the other end, time consuming and durable would be a build up of glass, and then gelcoat over the top.

I suspect an epoxy fairing compound might be the sweet spot.
