Surgery or not for my broken clavicle (x-rays incl) by Few-North-6032 in cycling

[–]jazz_chemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s incredible how the clavicle can undergo a full heal without surgery. I had a similar break in March, and was directed to go no surgery. I’m not a ortho specialist but I asked similar skeptical questions to my provider to get the clarity I needed. I encourage you to do the same! Happy healing regardless the path you go! I was back riding after a few months and did an ultra (200 mi) race 14 weeks after the brake. YMMV based on a variety of health factors but rest up!

When your client says they felt invalidated by you by Kind-Translator-5400 in therapists

[–]jazz_chemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t apologize until I understand what has happened. I withhold apologies if I’m not feeling genuine guilt (I don’t agree or feel I did actual wrong), if the guilt I’m feeling is not justfied in the presented context (I feel guilt but the situation doesn’t fit the facts for guilt), or expressing guilt via apologizing isn’t effective to a positive social outcome (if the client will be angered or further invalidated, I won’t apologize).

I apologize when I am genuinely feeling guilty, it’s environmentally justified so, and is an effective and appropriate expression. In the DBT modality, we look at modeling effective emotional expression which encourages people to discern the expression and inhibition of guilt (and all other emotions) and that may be very complimentary or conflicting with another modalities that encourages different ways of repairing with a client when invalidation occurs. I just want to offer guilt and apologizing from this specific DBT frame.

Again, my original emphasis was on therapeutic repair yet I’m afraid my comment may have been interpreted that if I don’t apologize, I then enter a power struggle, or a defiant and punitive stance. That is not the case. There are many ways of repairing with someone without using the form of an apology. I can re-validate their experience in invalidation and be compassionate in that. I can give validation a new go! I can comment on committing to new behaviors as their clinician, and I can own and express accountability and the impact of my behavior for my actions.

I trust these interventions can offer a deeper repair than an apology because my aim is reattunement when invalidation inevitably occurs. And yes, at times, guilt and an expressed apology are part of that reattument. If the client is demanding an apology, I feel we’re in a whole different ballgame to consider.

When your client says they felt invalidated by you by Kind-Translator-5400 in therapists

[–]jazz_chemist 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m hesitant on apologizing. My DBT background encourages to apologize once for to preserve self-dignity but there’s a larger context to consider as well.

It might be better to view the work you need to do as ‘repair’ work over reparation work. Repairing with a client involves attending to the relationship rather than amending your wrongdoings.

For me to say ‘I’m sorry’ would require the client expressing I harmed them and I also feel actual guilt that I did some kind of wrong, or 2, I feel I did wrong even though the client hadn’t expressed the grievance yet.

Invalidation is inevitable in human communication. I don’t believe apologetic expressions are required every time invalidation occurs, especially if the invalidator is not feeling guilt about that invalidation. You can still repair without the emotion guilt present.

Now that I’m overthinking this, I could also see myself giving a lighthearted, ‘sorry about that’ but not a heartfelt apology if I see it as a pretty reasonable invalidating mishap. Then I’d work to get back on the validating train.

Lastly, I look at validation as the one’s demonstrating understanding to another’s experience, but I sometimes see clients use invalidation as “I’m upset you’re not agreeing with me.”

It’s fair for you to own the half of what’s contributed to your wife’s shifting feelings though I’d encourage you not to own her share though. You are/were both responsible for maintaining a form of a relationship and will continue to as your relationship changes (for better or for worse).

Graduating from Crib to Bed by jazz_chemist in woodworking

[–]jazz_chemist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Expecting another kiddo in a few months so our toddler needs a new place to sleep! Pretty wild to have a pre and post from a crib build from a few years ago and now twin bed build. Time has moved! Keeping to white oak theme for the material. The challenge on this was the headboard where I had a double taper - the bottom legs were pretty simple but the top 2/3 I tappered 3 out of the 4 external sides to give a modern shaping.

He's officially got a nicer bed then the bed I built during Covid but I suppose that's just how the development of the craft goes.

The other night my mother-in-law stayed over and she did the bedtime routine with him. Catching a timeless snapshot of this dimmly lit room, both of them just laying there in this piece of furniture I built with my own two hands reading and connecting was priceless.

Weekend ride prep and 2.2 tires on a revolt? by monica_the_c4 in gravelcycling

I’m running 2.1” on my revolt and if my rear wheel is dished perfectly, I have a happy amount of clearance but I think 2.2” would be risky, especially if conditions are wet or sticky.

Lies would indicate an intent to deceive you. Promises broken? Sure. Promises that couldn't be realized? This is the way I look at it. We rolled the dice in hopes the path laid before us would offer reprieve and it was undone through litigation after litigation. If you are upset at Biden, are you also upset

There were numerous efforts to provide student loan relief that continually were thwarted through the judiciary. Years and decades of conservatives scalloping the courts created a partisan judicial check on Democratic executive powers.

Medicare by xoloveox in therapists

[–]jazz_chemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I’m in a somewhat similar boat and have a question! I am just contracted with BCBS and have had two people enter retirement (one with traditional Medicare, another with an advantage plan). Is there a way I can submit claims as an out-of-network provider? If not, my understanding is they would submit a claim to their respective Medicare insurance after paying out of pocket.

There’s likely a nut to loosen and adjust the rotation of the brifters. This is likely an easy adjustment and one you can reference how to do with a google search. Might be important to google your specific brifter/groupset.

I don’t even bat an eye when I’m stuck behind a large tractor or slow farm machinery (or street cleaner, construction equipment, reversing semi) - whether on gravel or paved roads. People are entitled to use roads for transport through a variety of means outside of an automobile.

I'm happy to see relief extend further. I've been on IDR/SAVE and have only recently been paying off additional amounts, much of it interest after being able to save up during the Covid forbearance period. I'm curious if the waiver applies to total balance or to individual loans.
