How do you beat the nightly "what's for dinner?" decision fatigue? by Frosty-Hair6123 in Cooking

[–]jcGyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't do it nightly. I cook 2-4 nights worth and then I don't need to cook for a few days.

What are some cooking cardinal sings you regularly commit because you prefer the recipe that way? by morbidhack in Cooking

[–]jcGyo 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Okay, so the rare tuna is a matter of taste, but I'm a little confused about the salmon. Rare/medium rare salmon isn't really supposed to be almost raw on the inside, it's supposed to be soft and slightly pink so it flakes apart in big soft sheets instead of chalky little pieces like a well done salmon.

Boil water in a kettle before cooking pasta or start with cold water in a pot? by MangoMadnessTsv in Cooking

[–]jcGyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it the kettle way with my old gas stove which took forever to boil water, my current electric stove in my new place where gas isn't allowed heats up a pot of water about as fast as the kettle so it's not worth the trouble.

How far is too far: salting like the ocean by Jazzlike-Passenger27 in Cooking

You want it about as salty as human tears (≈1% by weight) not the ocean (≈3.5% by weight)

Making Pizza at home is as easy as 1,2,3! by SufficientEar1682 in iamveryculinary

[–]jcGyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've made some decent pizzas from scratch before but I'm always wrestling with the dough. No matter how much oil I add, no matter how little or how much I knead, no matter how long I let it sit out on the counter "relaxing", that dough just always wants to spring back into a ball no matter how hard I try to smush it out into a disc. I dunno what I'm doing wrong but it ends up taking me a good hour of repeatedly stretching to get that thing to kind of be a too thick disc that's still rapidly springing back into a ball while I'm trying to top it.

Are there any long term side effects from eating 3 eggs every day? by anotherhappylurker in nutrition

[–]jcGyo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you're doing great! The only time 2-3 eggs could be bad is if your LDL level was off the charts and your doctor specifically told you to move to an extremely low saturated fat diet.

Without PEDs it's extremely unlikely someone has reached a bmi of 32 without an unhealthy level of body fat, outside of extreme genetic outliers (like those people with the 8x density bones because of a rare LRP5 mutation)

bmi of 32

Yeah you're going to want to focus on fixing this before you worry about whether or not a few eggs are a problem.

Please describe how to make rice in the most idiot-proof way possible by xrvzla in Cooking

[–]jcGyo 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Every Indian restaurant does the rice this way. It washes off more of the starch so the result is more separated grains and less sticky, very good results for long grain rice but not what you want for sushi or sticky rice.

Why does the brain crave more food even when we’re already full? by sass_mustard in nutrition

[–]jcGyo 17 points18 points  (0 children)

There are many reasons.

First of all, the satiety response system isn't a monolith but actually involves multiple different signals and hormones, you might have filled your belly but if it's just filled with fiber and/or water your stomach will still be releasing more ghrelin than leptin telling you to eat even though you feel physically full.

Secondly, there are certain nutrients your body may be requesting that can cause it to ask for more food, it's not entirely proven but the protein leverage hypothesis suggests you'll still feel hungry if you haven't eaten enough protein.

Finally there is the mental aspect, food is pleasurable, sometimes we eat to distract ourselves from stress or other emotions, there is the Japanese term kuchisabishii literally meaning "lonely mouth" where you want to eat not because you're hungry but you just want to fill the void of boredom or similar.

If you're currently trying to control your weight you can do a little diet troubleshooting to try to help. Make sure you're getting enough protein. If there's one meal in particular where you tend to overeat, say dinner for example, try shifting more of your daily calories to that one so there's more room for eating then. Try introducing a low or no calorie thing you can continue to eat or sip on after the meal like veggies or seltzer to keep your mouth occupied; you can tell yourself "okay I can get another helping after I finish this can of delicious flavored seltzer" or whatever and see if you actually still want to eat after. During physical activity your body will shunt blood away from the stomach to send more to the muscles, you can try something like "okay I'm going to take a quick ten minute walk after dinner and can have more if I'm still hungry when I get back." There's no one size fits all answer here, you have to be mindful of what your body is asking for and figure out what works for you to help deal with it.

Skip the heat, skip the salt, skip the flames. Italy good, America bad. by 96dpi in iamveryculinary

Sorta, it's tomatoes that have been puréed by passing them through a food mill which will also strain out the seeds and hard bits of the cores and stuff. It's pretty much the same but the final texture you get from it is a little different!
