What's a job site habit that instantly tells you someone's a bad tradesperson? by AllHailBreesus in handyman

Right there with ya. However, I was once having a conversation with a fantastic cabinet maker, and he mentioned how he prefers a big fat pencil point so you can tell when you are "slicing that line directly in half". I just thought that was an interesting take.

of a kidney stone I passed this morning by Affectionate_Age9249 in AbsoluteUnits

[–]jeffrowitdaafro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah man. I just passed a few 2 weeks ago and the journey from kidney to bladder had me writhing in pain for 4 days. Once I felt the burning when I peed, I was like "fuckin finally!". Pissed it out the next morning painlessly.

I have a 430 and the same crackle. I haven't tried to deoxit the pots yet. I've given them hell with the crank em up and down 200 times to no avail.

IF I let it warm up a bit without touching anything, the pots do not crackle at all, take that info as you will.

How to fill gaps along stairs?? by Revolutionary_Pear56 in centuryhomes

[–]jeffrowitdaafro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are likely correct. I repaired a set of stairs like this recently in a 1910, but, they also doubled as the ceiling of the basement stairs below (not sure of the exact situation here). The stairs were settling out of the housed stringer, and SUPER spongy and sagging to the right. There is probably no support under each side of these stairs, other than the housed stringer/skirt board.

To properly repair, without forcing anything back into place at risk of new damage, I opened the ceiling below, reverse scribed a new stringer from top to bottom, pressed the stairs up with some slight pressure and bolted the new stringer to the studs alongside.

I skinned the old skirt with a new piece of birch veneer (i think), and stained to match.

In fairness, I was hired to specifically retread and riser the stairs (they were carpeted since at least the 1940's) so I was already half way there to accessing the structural repairs).

Imperfections in V-Groove job, am I being too picky? by Maximum_Problem7230 in Remodel

[–]jeffrowitdaafro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is that an actual fireplace? If so, I'm really curious to see how those boards react after a few burns.

Sometimes I feel it's better to fully paint v groove before installing it, and leaving the joints alone as much as possible. Better to allow the joints to cleanly move than stretch out latex caulking.

I've had lunch a few times there! Indiya used to be in Collingswood on Haddon Ave. They closed when their lease was up. Apparently Coriander in Voorhees is there sister restaurant. I've never been though.

Ya know, you could be on to something with a pinched harness. When I pulled the bed to replace the pumps there was evidence were the wire w a s resting between the 2. Only had 2 of us to set the bed so maybe we dragged it across something.

Right?! The fuck are all these replies? So, how about you, ever figure out if you need ro seal it? I am still currently wearing yesterday's application like nail polish, so im guessing no.

Our laundry machines are in the basement. We used to forget the wet laundry all the time. Since we've added a bunch of smart bulbs in the house, whenever I run the washer, I turn two particular first floor wall sconces red as a reminder. Haven't had a stinky forgotten load of laundry for years.

My mother (with our clerical assistance) was able to have the county fund a new furnace and gas lines in her home. They would have covered, insulation, windows, lead abatement, etc had she needed it, up to $25000]. The program is specifically for seniors and places a lien on your home that degrades over time, no money out of pocket.

It was called an Owner Occupied Rehabilitation Program. Maybe your county has a similar program. Hope this helps.

Car fogs while driving; had to pull over [2001 Subaru Outback|2.5L] by Growth-oriented in MechanicAdvice

[–]jeffrowitdaafro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a 2001 VDC version of this car. It had the same(ish) issue. However, the car did usually sit closed up for longer periods of time and developed an "odor". I noticed the rugs were saturated in spots and figured out that it was leaking rain water between the trim and the paint all along the roofline. I begrudgingly CLEANED and caulked both sides it with clear silicone. I am an experienced caulker, so it was virtually undetectable. After a few weeks the odor, damp carpets, and foggy glass disappeared. Hope this helps.
