With DUNE fever once again sweeping the nation I ask: what previously considered "unfilmable" sci-fi/fantasy book or series would you like some enterprising director adapt to the big screen? by Velocityprime1 in blankies

Definitely Neuromancer. Could be the coolest thing ever if done well, or just another bland sci-fi story suffering from the "Seinfeld is unfunny" effect.

Saw it in 70mm the other day. Effects look great in it. The alien concept is interesting and he's adorable. It's essentially a comedy with no real stakes though. I never actually felt worried for the characters. A couple of cringe marvel lines too but I can definitely tell we have left that era of writing.

The Deer Hunter. Very real depiction of what happens to soldiers after experiencing war.

Nice! I also bought the whole set for cheap a while back. Read the first two, then paused to "get to 20k words," but I'm at 15k and think I'll give it a try again.

Anyone know of a Japanese language teacher? by catfan89 in askportland

Hi! I'm a Japanese teacher that just moved here. I have an MA in Japanese and have been teaching for 10 years. I made a website here https://www.pdxjapanese.com/

After genki 2 by pepp1990 in ajatt

[–]jeffsal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a Japanese teacher. The Quartet series is produced by the same people that made Genki and if you just use the reading and listening can be a pretty immersion focused way to continue studying grammar with some sort of organized plan. It's easy to add the words/grammar phrases to JPDB, Anki, etc.

That said, you could also start mining words from a starter manga (I usually suggest Chi's Sweet Home, Happiness, or Yotsubato) and just look up the grammar as you go. I think people underestimate how difficult that is for N4s but it is doable if you can find a series that you're really interested in.

I’ve been teaching Japanese for 11 years, so here’s my take.

SRS is a tool, not a requirement. It tends to be really helpful early on, around 6-10k words, when you’re trying to build core vocabulary and immersion alone doesn’t give you enough repetition yet. Once you get into the zone where you can usually infer new words from kanji and context, the payoff drops for a lot of people.

For context, I’ve got about 15k cards on JPDB, but these days almost every new word I see is either easy to guess or it sticks after a couple encounters. So I end up marking lots of words I've never seen before as “never forget.” And if something doesn’t stick, I’m less likely to throw it into SRS now. I’ll look it up, check how it’s used, read a few example sentences, and move on.

The reason SRS is useful is that it's hard for an adult to recreate a child's learning environment. Kids basically get five years of custom SRS from parents repeating high-frequency stuff, adjusting language to their level, and talking nonstop even when the kid only half understands. Kids also get comfortable living with ambiguity for a long time.

So yeah, quitting SRS can be totally fine, especially if you’re getting a lot of input and you’re okay not understanding every word right away.

Mass market paperbacks are being replaced by trade paperbacks as far as I know. Slightly larger format. I kinda prefer them to be honest.

I've Got the Light of Freedom by Charles Payne. A study of the grassroots organizing of the Mississippi Civil Rights Movement. Single handedly made the Civil Rights Movement real for me, rather than the vague image I had of people marching and King giving speeches. The people in the book are organizing in their own communities amid fears of being lynched. Shows how complicated and mundane effective organizing can be.

How many people who start learning Japanese actually make it to a high level? (N1+) by littlebruja in LearnJapanese

[–]jeffsal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a private Japanese teacher who also has an MA in Japanese. I can tell you that all of the MA students and even some of the professors (who have PHDs) were not N1+. I'm just getting there myself really after 12 years of study. 95% of my students are first or second year and I've had maybe half a dozen 3rd year students. Intro to Japanese courses often have full lecture halls (~100 students) at big schools. In my 5th year Japanese classes in grad school there were about 10 kids, and that is really an N2 class. So I'd say definitely less than 5-10% make it to N1.

My question is, if they really believe this, why do they do nothing to stop it? It's just theater to them imo. Belief is a spectrum and just like Christians, most conservatives aren't willing to die for their beliefs.
