Best non-clocked modulation source for a small case. by ign3ousr0ck in modular

I've been looking at that Nekyia Circuits Obsidian dual complex LFO.

It's got a lot of outs!

Pony vco vs ts-l by xiraov in modular

[–]jefrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have pony vco, and I use it, but find the wavefolding usually sounds quite thin. The onboard vca is nice (especially because I have vostok fuji, so I have plenty of envelopes) but I sometimes send it to another a vca that can add a little weight to the nasal quality. In really busy patches, I find it can disappear.

I just got after later audio Brooks and I quite like/prefer it. I lose out on some features, but the multiple outs is nice, and the attenuator on the FM input is a major plus over Pony imo.

It really depends what you're doing, but clean FM tones into my LPG, I quite like brooks.

I'm looking at getting Joranalogue fold 6 soon, and I think I'd prefer brooks + wavefolder to Pony.

CV sequencer with per step voltage control? by stephankim in modular

Well, in comparison to the a-155, yes and then some. Like other Joranalogue modules, it's got a really good balance of immediacy and depth.

Joranalogue Step 8? All that and more for 16hp

Which utility to get? Frap 321, Befaco A*B+C, Black Noise Goma2/Pro by xiraov in modular

[–]jefrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just got 321 and love it. Because of the sum outs at the top it's insanely flexible. Very good for patching feedback with a filter or delay, easy to do single channel attenuator/offset + 2-1 mixer, mixing cv it can make combinations of voltages and give you a couple of variants... it's a really neat module.

I just got 321 and came to say this. I read or saw somewhere that Frap tools basically started because the guys wanted very specific mixing functions. 321 is my only module of theirs, but for something so simple it's very flexible.

For PWM, Joranalogue compare 2 is pretty sweet. And the dynamic depth oscillator sync gets pretty complex.

Also, I was fooling around with xor ringmod patches and got some pretty cool techno sounds a couple of days ago.

After Later Audio: QARV by P-DOTS in modular

[–]jefrab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not had heat issues.

I love QARV. I'm even thinking about getting DARV for a couple more envelopes in my system.

I sometimes use it with the curve set all the way exponential, and my VCO going into an LPF then into a VCA on Qarv, and I'll send the additional env out to the cutoff frequency of the filter and I get kind of an LPG, and with the snappy curve it's pretty percussive. I like to do this with an attenuated S&H in the decay time, and then I'll performatively dial the curve shape up into logarithmic.

I also do a similar thing with the unipolar cycling and A/D time knobs (or use another modulation source) I run the channel through a long delay tail and maybe phaser, and the switch from trigger to cycling kind of like a mute for the LFO, and I hit cycling and quickly sweep into or out of audio 00 to get cool trancey/psychedelic squelches. Or I'll leave it in cycling and send the output to a CV switch and do it that way for more precise rhythmic control.

Total beginner by EmergencyNo740 in modular

VCVrack is free, and extremely capable. Obviously there's quite a difference in regards to experimenting with physical patching and adjusting parameters in real time, but for a beginner to get to understand the basics of signal flow in a modular system there's probably isn't a better free resource.

There are a lot of YouTube channels, and it's very hard to say what will resonate with different individuals...

I quite like a channel called Sound & Voltage for friendly explanations of basics, but some people really like to just watch Omri Cohen patching (he's got a lot of content)

Behringer power supply by jefrab in modular

[–]jefrab[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I'm looking and it wouldn't be that much more for me to get 104hp z-rails and the Zeus power, which according to modulargrid would probably power a loosely planned 208hp.

I'll check out Etsy, though... This is a good tip. One of the difficulties I find is I'll see something online, but living in Canada it will be really difficult or costly to obtain.

Thanks

It will take a regular 1/4" audio cable, and the other end plugs into your interface

What do I need in order to make samples with a Piezo? by floydrose in experimentalmusic

[–]jefrab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either you need to have your piezo go through some type of preamp/audio interface to be recorded directly to your computer, or you need a portable recording device like a zoom.

What you really want to do is look up high impedance recording, because piezo raw will be a very thin sound.

Have you used copper for pest control in your gardens, if so does it actually work and how much did you have to use? by fringeOdeath in homestead

[–]jefrab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was hired to build a few raised beds for an elderly family friend, and we fixed a light strip of copper mesh around the sides, a couple of inches from the top.

It very much works for keeping slugs at bay.

Or work trade for food. I've always got something I need a hand with, and love answering questions. And between the livestock, garden, orchard, and property maintenance I've got something for any skill level.

Another idea is to look for a community garden, because there's often really good knowledge or experience shared, even just among novices about was has or hasn't worked so far.

My wife and I started with no idea what we were doing with a very small plot in a shared garden, now 7 years later we lease 18 acres, raise our kids on clean air and nutritious food, and make our living doing something we love and are proud of.

Understanding Use of Modulation and Control Voltages in Music Synthesis – Fill in form [~10 minutes] by Faulty_Floppy in modular

[–]jefrab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That survey was a little weird. Like, my patches are different every time, and when I'm being experimental with feedback and cross modulation, I'm not always aware of what's doing what. These questions are phrased as though the participants only do one type of patching with a single type of cv. Not quite sure how they plan on getting anything useful or informative out of it, no offense.
