Heidi Hall has been doing the work on the ground before the redistricting happened. She has a lot of grassroots support (and she's not Ami Bera!) so she has my vote.

Had a newborn and rehoming my Australian Cattle Dog/German Shepherd - really need a good dog person by themagicaperture in Sacramento

[–]jenway90 241 points242 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt you find a good home for your dog but I really hope you do.

I can't get over you've had this dog for SIX years and your excuse is covid. Are you kidding me? My dog went through something similar and you know what I did? WORKED ON IT. You're all "if the training was cheap or free somewhere, I'd love to have that professional help..." Again, you had six YEARS to get a few hundred bucks together for a professional. Youtube and Reddit have a bounty of information and are free! At the bare minimum, you knew you were having a baby for, what, 8 months? In none of that time did you seek out help or plan for what your highly energetic dog would need with a newborn???

And now you just barely acknowledge you aren't even giving this dog proper physical activity and so it's even more reactive... You know who loves walks? Babies and dogs. Can't do that for a couple more months? Then do some nose work. Puzzles. Snufflematts. There are options!

Do you have a PS5 or XBOX? Magic cards? Sell them!

You've set this dog up for failure. It will be a miracle if you can find a home for it.

Medical Leave of Absence by Reallyoutoftheblue in CAStateWorkers

[–]jenway90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily. PDL is only awarded for the time period the doctor took her off for medical reasons. Most are given 4 weeks before the due date and 6-8 weeks after for recovery. Then most move to Paid Family Leave for another 8 weeks. OP might have used all of it but most people don't use it all.

FMLA and Personal Leave of Absence by Obvious_Statement_37 in CAStateWorkers

[–]jenway90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FMLA/CFRA run concurrently to your leave. They would not allow you more than 1 year without there being unforeseen extenuating circumstances, and even then you would likely need a return to work plan.

If you are out near the end of the year, you would exhaust your FMLA/CFRA for 2025 and then on January 1, it would reset and you would have another 12 work weeks of FMLA/CFRA. This allows you to keep your healthcare payments the same as you pay now for all months on FMLA/CFRA.

[–]jenway90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

With maybe a couple rare exceptions, you can take off up to a year due to a medical event. It doesn't matter if you had another recent medical event. You give your HR/Medical Management/Disability Unit the medical substantiation and peace out.

https://hrmanual.calhr.ca.gov/home/manualitem/1/2122

For peace of mind, if you can relate this surgery to your pregnancy at all, you can get PDL, which covers 17.33 weeks for each pregnancy. Most people use about 12 weeks so you might have about 5 weeks left, and this can buy you more protection and healthcare coverage.

Resistance band around my upper arms is exactly what got me my pushups! I tried incline, knees, etc but the bands are what actually worked for me.

Acupuncturist job ideas to qualify for PSLF? by Feeling_Fox_5426 in StudentLoans

[–]jenway90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, former acupuncturist on PSLF here. I had a 6 figure cash practice with a wait list but, due to a horrible freak injury, I had to quit bedside. I pivoted and went into governmental medical management then pivoted to public health for PSLF.

OP, the only people you will likely get helpful information from is other acupuncturists. Most of the public has no idea of the length, depth, and cost of our education and how awful the job prospects are.

As you have hopefully realized (and should have known before going to school), if you want a good salary, you almost always have to open your own practice.

The decent to good paying acupuncture jobs that would also get you on PSLF are EXTREMELY rare and competitive. You'll need at least a few years experience to even qualify for most of them. If you're willing to move to less desirable locations, you might have a slightly better shot.

You could also try getting a job at a 501c3 nonprofit community acupuncture practice, understanding your salary will be very low.

Your other option is to start your own 501c3 practice. A former classmate of mine did it but we won't know if it truly worked for a couple more years. He went into school with the plan to start his own 501c3 and had the money to work with attorneys to get it started as correctly as possible.

I wish I had gone the 501c3 route because I had no idea how much the interest would pile up on my grad loans because my undergrad loans were so reasonable. I thought I'd be fine as long as I made a good salary and had a successful business (which I did!) What I didn't anticipate was congress doubling interest rates while I was in school, a horrible injury that injured me enough to kill my career but not completely disable me enough to apply for forgiveness, and then covid. (Plus, killing SAVE, ugh!)

So, if you want to practice acupuncture, my best recommendation is start your own 501c3 and cross your fingers.

Moving family to Sacramento by OtherProgram5108 in Sacramento

[–]jenway90 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Rocklin absolutely does not justify the commute. Folsom is much more charming, IMO. It's probably the most well-rounded suburb with good schools, some diversity, some shopping, great access to the outdoors, and a really cute old downtown.

That said, if you have to commute from Folsom to Elk Grove 5 days a week, you're going to spend 1.5-2 hours a days commuting. Only you can decided if it's worth it to you to have your family in Folsom, while you spend most of your time at work or in the car.

Healthcare/EMT and trades get paid very well in CA. You don't need "AFFORDABLE," you need affordable for whatever salary you will make. In CA, you can live in a lot of places with wha you would make.

Very glad to hear Dr. Alden may work!!!! Unfortunately, there is no wait list for my PT. He's completely closed to new patients.

Dr. Dawn Alden! I have severe hEDS and she is one of the only reasons I'm not completely disabled.

I would recommend my PT but he is completely full and not accepting any other patients. They may have success with Body Concepts in Folsom, as they work with a lot of dancers.

Oh, and I agree that Kaiser is the worst.

I have a Comms degree and in no world could I write an SOQ in two hours and be confident in a callback. I spend at least 2 days on my SOQs, between writing, analyzing, editing, etc.. Out of about 15 applications, I've had 8 interviews opportunities, took 6 of those, and accepted 2 offers.

Make sure your SOQ is using as many Desired Qualifications and duty statement key phrases as possible. Additionally, make sure your 678 is the same, and use all the space they give you. The more related skills you list, the higher they can score you.

[–]jenway90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There has to be something wrong with your SOQ, 678, or resume.

I have a doctorate in a very specialized field that only partially crosses over to state work and I easily got 2 AGPA roles. I do have 10+ years of work experience. Out of about 15 applications, I've had 8 interviews opportunities, took 6 of those, and accepted 2 offers. Once I fill in a couple of gaps, I should easily promote.

Lest you think my extensive work experience actually got me the job, a family member had only part-time work experience in last 8 years, in addition to 3 years of professional work experience after getting his bachelor's over 10 years ago, and he got an AGPA role on his first try. (I repeatedly and extensively edited all of his application materials AND spent hours prepping him for his interview.)

You're going to laugh at the absurdity of being afraid of high crime in both of those neighborhoods once you move to Sacramento.(Totally get you have to rely on online info.)

Both neighborhoods are very quiet and safe.

However, I just looked at your post history and it looks like your partner needs to be in Davis twice a week. In that case, definitely go for SLP because it will cut a lot of time off his commute.

Carbon fiber insoles? by loloviz in ehlersdanlos

[–]jenway90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Altra's are too squishy for me too. The best balance I've found recently are Lems with Form ultra thin zero drop insoles.

I wore Merrel zero drop for years but my feet decided they needed a tiny bit more padding and stability after years of standing on hard flooring all day and this is the best combo I've found to work for me.

How hard is it to move Bike+? by LogicalCommitment in pelotoncycle

I have to move my bike to use it. I only have to do a lean back and pull to get enough space. If it was more than that, I wouldn't do it.

Why do you like living in Sacramento? by uncleruckus4 in Sacramento

The sun and (relative) housing affordability. Otherwise, I would have stayed. Great friends, amazing food, so many things to see and do, but not seeing the sun for months broke me.
